Storm Damage in Tennessee
What do we expect for tomorrow? Much of the same....as a frontal boundary nears our area, we'll see thunderstorms increase as our area is saturated in moisture from the southwest winds. Our overnight temperatures will stay warm and muggy with elevated humidity and dew points. The atmosphere is very unstable. We expect several rounds of storms.
Most of the stronger storms tonight are back in Missouri and Kentucky.
*Latest, Local Forecast*
Stay atop these storms by checking RADAR often. I'll list two below.
**WUNDERGROUND RADAR**
**NWS-NASHVILLE RADAR**
SPC Outlook Today (Saturday)

Looks like SUMMERTIME around Tennessee. We'll be HOT, HUMID & have a chance of Thunderstorms today. The map to the left is the Storm Prediction Center's Outlook for today.
We are in the 'slight' risk for strong storms. During these storms, we could see alot of lightning, strong winds, and heavy rainfall.
~More Later....
Hot Saturday in Tennessee
We expect mid 80's once again today with a chance of thunderstorms after lunch.
*Latest, Local Forecast*
Since I do rainfall measurements at 7 am for CoCoRaHS, I've already posted our May 31st number. This means our month is complete. We finished with 3.27" here at my home. The month of May averages 4.72", so we were almost an 1.5" short this month. That being said, everything is very green and growing nicely.
For the year, we're at 21.86"....and for the record, we didn't reach 20" of rainfall until August in 2007.
Near normal rainfall (4.41") is expected for June.
I should have the climate data for May in the next day or two.

The Return of Sunshine!
Our Latest, Local Forecast calls for a very nice day with high temperatures near 80! By the weekend, highs could be in the upper 80's to near 90!!
Unless we get some rain on Saturday (a small chance right now), we'll end May with 3.27"...it is slightly below normal, but a HUGE improvement over May 2007....so far for May, we've had a high temperature of 85.9 (and that could still be broken) and our low has been 41.8...
Last May (2007), we measured just 2.13" of rainfall.....and saw very little (just two days) rain from May 6th onward....it was the beginning of a hot and dry summer.

Foggy Overnight and Morning!
*Local Webcam* (won't see too much tonight, other than cool looking lights, but it will be interesting by daybreak)
After the fog burns off tomorrow morning, temperatures should rise quickly to near 80 degrees! Could even see upper 80's to near 90 by the weekend. :) I wish someone (anyone?) would volunteer to mow my grass when it is that warm!

Back To Work Everyone!
We had an excellent weekend here. Worked mostly in the yard on Saturday, then went to church on Sunday and headed out to Center Hill Lake on Sunday afternoon. Spent the night on the houseboat and enjoyed a fun Memorial Day there along with quite a bit of rainfall and winds! Had some lightning and thunder, but not enough to cause concern. We ended up with .68" in the good ol' CoCoRaHS rain gauge.
Our latest, local forecast is calling for RAIN again! Our garden and flowers really love the rain. We should clear out by Wednesday night and the rest of the week after that looks quite nice.
On a very sad note, the Parkersburg, IA tornado that struck on Sunday has taken at least eight lives. There are reports this twister could have possibly been an EF-5. We'll have to wait and see what the National Weather Service says.

Wild Night In Kansas
These pictures are courtesy of KAKE-TV. They have a very nice Weather Gallery.
My friends over at Severe Studios have had a busy night chasing bad weather in Kansas.
Last evening around 8:22 pm, a tornado warning was issued for Greensburg, KS. You may remember this town. It was nearly completely destroyed last May. While these folks are hardy and tornado toughened, I imagine their hearts beat a little faster than normal this evening.
Amazing video from Douglas Kiesling chasing a Wedge Tornado. My apologies in advance for the one foul word during his attempt to avoid being killed by this huge tornado. Stick with the video, it gets VERY impressive about 1:10 in to it.
This area will again be under the gun today as Severe Weather is expected in the Kansas area.
SevereStudios Chasers Ben Holcomb, Kory Hartman and Kenny Allen will be in the field chasing and streaming today. Associate Chasers Tim Purington and Johnathan Brouwer will also be in the field today.
Excellent story from WSB in Atlanta about these storms.
Our Memorial Day weekend weather is promising to be warm and dry. Be sure, if you have plants, to water your garden.

USDA-TN Crop Weather
Week Ending Date
May 18, 2008
Agricultural Summary
Most field activities were limited last week due to scattered showers and
thunderstorms across Tennessee. Planting progress for most crops
continues to lag behind last year and the five-year average. With almost
one-fourth of their acreage planted, cotton producers were 10 days behind
the five-year average, while soybean farmers lagged one week behind the
normal schedule. Tobacco transplanting and hay harvest continued on a
limited basis, both slightly behind the 5-year average. The winter wheat
crop continues to be rated in mostly good-to-excellent condition with a
few fields beginning to turn color. Other field activities taking place
last week, as weather allowed, included spreading fertilizer, spraying
pesticides, and picking strawberries.
There were 3 days considered suitable for fieldwork last week. As of
Friday, topsoil moisture levels were rated 3 percent short, 70 percent
adequate, and 27 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture levels were rated 2
percent very short, 11 percent short, 70 percent adequate, and 17 percent
surplus. Temperatures across the State were below normal last week, as was
precipitation.
County Agent Comments
"Rainy and cool weather continues to plague and halt cotton and soybean
planting. Wheat continues to progress well. Diseases are present and poised
to affect yields depending upon weather conditions the rest of May. However,
many acres have been sprayed with a fungicide which is a plus to ward off
disease progress. Cotton planting timing is rapidly reaching a critical
stage where producers need to be getting cotton planted."
Tim Campbell, Dyer County
"Continued wet, cloudy weather allowed few opportunities for field work
this week. Producers are looking for warmer/drier conditions next week to
complete corn planting and start soybean planting. Some herbicide
applications went out this past week and side-dressed nitrogen fertilizer
applications were able to be made."
Jeff Lannom, Weakley County
"Hay harvest took an upturn this weekend in hopes of catching a few days
of drying time in between threat of rain. Some river bottoms will have
some late planted corn."
Troy Dugger, Hickman County
"The wet weather has made some people anxious about setting tobacco and
they are behind schedule. Several people have tobacco plants ready to set
and it is too wet for ground preparation. Pastures and hay are coming
along but with the hay that has been harvested; the yield is down due to
last year's drought."
Jason Evitts, Trousdale County
"The wheat crop has started to change color. Some weed issues such as
vetch, thistle, etc. has shown up in some fields of wheat. Wet weather has
delayed some field work but corn planting is nearing completion. Hay
harvest of tall fescue has been delayed. Those producers with bermuda hay
fields are seeing some good growth despite cool temperatures."
Matt Webb, Marion County

Pickett State Park

Many of you know for my daytime (read: paying) job, I sell billboard advertising (well....actually, I sell ideas) for Lamar Outdoor Advertising. One of the benefits of my position in sales is that I get to see many different places. Today was one of those days.
I was able to go up to Fentress County, TN (on the northern Cumberland Plateau) and visit the Pickett State Park.
(excerpted from TN Encyclopedia)
Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Company 1471 organized at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, in 1933, before moving first to Putnam County and then settling in Pickett County in 1934. There, they constructed a dam and a twelve-acre lake, twenty-two miles of roads, telephone lines, trails, a lodge, picnic areas, cabins, and other facilities for the new Pickett Forest State Park (the area was also known as Pickett Forest Recreation Area). The CCC also built fire towers and ranger stations in the forested areas of Pickett. The National Park Service designed park buildings and structures to utilize native materials and fit in with the local landscape, providing for functionally and aesthetically related components that have remained easily accessible to park visitors.
A 1937 U.S. Department of Interior master plan for Pickett Forest State Park shows picnic areas, auto and trailer camps, groups of cabins, trails, comfort stations, and shelters, many of which still exist. Historic resources (ca. 1934-42) are constructed of rock faced coursed stone with wood trim. They are gable-roofed and one story in height. Many buildings have large, impressive stone fireplaces.
*Excellent Article from TN Encyclopedia*
*Pickett State Park-Wikipedia Site*
*Great Hikes in Tennessee article*
It is a very nice (and large-17,000 acres) Tennessee State Park under the State's Department of Environment and Conservation. Parts of this park was built under the Civilian Conservation Corps, including some of the oldest cabins...built in the 1930's under the direction of the CCC...these cabins are very rustic and made of stone.
Here is the contact information:

4605 Pickett Park HighwayJamestown , TN 38556-4141
Office: 931-879-5821

Either call them for directions or get on Interstate 40 and Exit at #317 (Crossville) Hwy. 127 and head north to Highway 154 (which is just north of Jamestown, TN) and head down Hwy 154...you'll run right into it!
Another Nice Day!
Wednesday looks very nice with temperatures right around 70° for the daytime high while a slight chance of showers move in for Thursday and Friday as we warm up once again. Daytime highs on those days should be around 75° on Thursday and near 80° by Friday.
The holiday weekend is looking gorgeous with daytime highs in the lower 80's and virtually no chance for rain.
I'll be back later with more on where I traveled today here in Tennessee.
Hint: Northern Cumberland Plateau and the Civilian Conservation Corps!
Tuesday's Weather Forecast

Everglades Wildfire
This story from USATODAY.com (who recently updated their site with a new look) about the Wildfires in South Florida. Warnings for residents to stay indoors were posted across the east coast of Florida.
I visited the Everglades as a child when my grandparents lived in Pompano Beach. It is one incredible place.
Geography Lesson
One of my dear readers pointed out to me that we are not actually on the Cumberland Plateau. Actually we are on the Highland Rim section of the Cumberland Plateau. The official plateau area (see above map) starts somewhere around Monterey in the higher elevations.
Here is another site with more information.
Thanks for the correction David! :)
Cool Morning, Warm Afternoon!
*Latest, Local Forecast*
So far this month, we've measured 2.50" of rain on my CoCoRaHS gauge.
Normal precipitation for the month of May is 4.72"
.....we are just a bit behind this month.
For the year, we're at 20.39 inches and our average rainfall is 22.58"
....much better than last year.
The early thoughts for our weather on Memorial Day is highs in the 80's and lows in the 60's with widely scattered showers. I'll go farther out on the limb the closer we get to the weekend! :)
Have an excellent morning.

Hurricane Discussion
In honor of hurricane season starting in just under 14 days, I thought I'd post about these weather creatures.
Interesting article from the AP Science Writer that just popped up.
Says (in a nutshell) that 'climate change' is NOT the cause of the recent so-called jump in hurricanes.
**Hmmm, could it be cyclical?**
The study was published today in Nature Geoscience.
What A Sunset!
We had a sunny morning to start, followed by clouds, followed by a front late this afternoon that dropped a bit (.02") of rain and then took the clouds with it.
We now have (as evidenced by the picture) a clear sky, north winds @ 2 mph, and low (48%) humidity.
Our latest, local forecast calls for a nice day tomorrow with highs around 75°. Active weather returns with a chance for showers and thunderstorms for Tuesday and Wednesday.
Sunday Weather Outlook
We start out sunny this morning here in Cookeville, TN.
Our *latest, local forecast* has in the 50/50 shot for rainfall, including thundershowers, for today.
The radar is showing (at 6:45 am) some shower activity to the south of us.
We expect to go through a couple of days of active weather and then for temperatures to increase to the mid 80's by the end of next week.
Headed off to church in a little over an hour from now. Daughter is in a human video today.

Weather Prediction
While I'd seen and cruised around on TWP, I'd forgotten what an incredible resource Jeff Haby's website is for those of us who love everything about the weather.
Mr. Haby states in his purpose: "The main focus of this web site is weather prediction education. While there are many websites for retrieving weather data, there remains somewhat of a lack of weather data interpretation and forecasting methods. This site will benefit the beginner as well as the advanced forecaster."
Thanks again, Clay....
Saturday Early Afteroon Update
Currently, we're at 70.8° and anticipate hitting 73° later this afternoon.
High School Graduation ceremonies were fun. 475 young people have moved to the next chapter of their lives. A few completed their high school a year early and a few had perfect attendance since kindergarten.

Awesome Saturday
While temperatures this morning are chilly...40's in many places here on the Plateau, we expect to see 70's by this afternoon under a sunshine-filled sky.
You can see the fog from this morning's Cookeville Webcam shot.
Our forecast today also shows that winds show increase as the day goes along. Then, a chance of passing showers tonight and a better chance of showers mixing with some lightning and thunder for Sunday.
For now, we'll enjoy this awesome Saturday. We're about to head to the Cookeville High School graduation. It is being held today at Tennessee Tech University's Hooper Eblen Center.

Rain For Wednesday and Thursday
Don't think it'll be a complete washout on Wednesday, but Thursday is a different story. Heavy rain is expected and can't rule out a strong to severe storm or two developing, especially in southern sections of Middle Tennessee.
Remember, all the weather links you need are down the right side of this blog. Check them out! :)

Monday Evening Wrap-Up
Even warmer weather is on tap for Tuesday. We'll first have to get through tonight where many of us will see lows in the lower to middle 40's. By tomorrow afternoon, the mercury should reach 76°....
At least, this evening, the Severe Weather Ticker is all quiet. Have a nice night!
More Like Spring!
Checked CoCoRaHS for rain amounts and found some IMPRESSIVE numbers coming from Maryland and Virginia. In Marlton, MD...the county of Calvert, one observer had 6.30" of rain in his gauge this morning...another from the same county near Dunkirk had 6.14...yet another in the county Prince George's and the town of Brandywine measured 5.62"......
3, 4, and 5 inches were all very common in Maryland and Virginia.
Our next shot of rain should arrive sometime late Tuesday night into Wednesday.
Have a GREAT day!
Sunday, May 11, 2008
What Happened To Spring?
Funny thing, our high today occurred at 8:15 this morning when it was 66.1°...I'd gone out to get the paper and we had a warm westerly wind with sunshine filled skies...that was the best it got today.
Skies have been mostly cloudy throughout the day with some drizzle in the late afternoon. Our highest wind gust was 25.1 mph. One other station measured a 30.0 mph wind gust earlier today. Over near Nashville, Smyrna Airport measured a 46 mph gust.
We will eventually recover from this chilly run as the workweek forecast looks quite nice!
In other weather news, twisters have killed at least 22 this weekend across the US, including one in Dublin, GA. My sister used to live there.
Middle Tennessee Weather Fact of the Day
On May 11, 2003...
A pre-dawn severe weather outbreak produces six tornadoes across the Nashville metropolitan area. Two of the tornadoes (Franklin and Walterhill) are rated as F3, and produce considerable damage. The other four twisters are rated F1. Amazingly, there are no injuries. This is the 9th largest tornado outbreak in Middle Tennessee's history.

The latest, local forecast here
We received .35 inches of rainfall last night. Most of the heavier rainfall and stronger weather was in the southern sections of Middle TN where I found 2+ inch amounts and many amounts over 1.5".
Enjoy your Mother's Day Sunday. If your mom is still on this earth, go and honor her (heck, honor her everyday) today. If you're married and you all have kids, honor your wife!

Rough Overnight Possible
We are in SEVERE WEATHER MODE...will be updating a little more frequently as conditions warrant.......
It looks as if we'll see some developing SEVERE WEATHER from around midnight through daybreak here on the Plateau in Middle Tennessee. While southwest Tennessee is under a Tornado Watch, the general thinking is that all of Middle Tennessee will need to be on the lookout for SEVERE WEATHER.

I would take this situation seriously (especially if you're in Southern Sections of Middle TN) as we progress through the evening. Don't be caught off guard. If you plan on going out, listen to local radio, have your mobile phone with you, and let someone know that you're going to be away from TV and internet so they may at least alert you in the event of severe weather in your area.
Weekend Outlook

Interesting weekend here in Middle Tennessee.
This morning, I went and helped setup tables in one of our church parking lots for the Speed The Light Missions Yard Sale. The Yard Sale was open to anyone who desired to sell their unwanted items. We had quite a few sellers and by 7:00 am, we had quite a few buyers!
Looking at our weekend weather, today is just going to be AWESOME. Bright, warm sunshine with a light NNE wind. Highs will reach the middle 70's...*latest, local forecast*
We are watching, with great interest, a possible severe situation developing for us later tonight and into early Sunday morning.
This is an excellent time to review basic Lightning Safety Tips from our friends at NOAA.
98% of people killing by lightning were killed outside
89% were males
30% were 20-25
Hazardous Weather Outlook
We had some exciting weather last evening. Very isolated storms dumped hail on one community.
Here is that: Local Storm Report
The Nashville office of the National Weather Service has a great, "somewhat new" product that has my interest (especially during possible severe weather)...It is called the "Severe Weather Summary Page" and here is the SWSP Link.

Rain Chances Today and Sunday
I'm not too excited about rain prospects for today. Some areas of Middle TN could see a pop-up shower or storm. The big rains come in late Saturday night and Sunday where 1 to 2 inch numbers could be very common. Saturday, during the day, looks very nice with highs in the middle 70's.
I've moved the two radars on the blog up close to the top on the right-hand side for obvious reasons. One takes you to the NWS-Nashville radar, another is the Wunderground radar (referenced above). Both are excellent.
Looking at yesterday here in Cookeville, we received .91 inches of rainfall...just under 1 inch. I checked briefly last night and found many locations with more than an inch. The CoCoRaHS daily rainfall report will be interesting to see. Remember, you can select any state...you may also click on the precipitation header and it will sort the highest to the lowest.
Lastly, we have a couple of cool things for you all to check out. The first is the Cookeville WebCam...it takes a snapshot about every 1 minute or so. The second is our Emergency Management Agency's weather page. Enjoy!

Enjoy this beautiful day...we sure have enjoyed the last several days. Went to my parent's houseboat on Friday evening and stayed until Saturday evening. Had a beautiful Saturday to spend on Center Hill Lake!
Sunday, we enjoyed a great church service at our home church.
Afterwards, I got the lawn mowed and few tree limbs pruned. Then we went to a wonderful couple's home for our small group. There, we enjoyed quite a meal with ribs, chicken, and many wonderful side dishes! Usually, we just snack and have Bible Study. I asked our host if he could cook like this every Sunday night!!! :)
