Big, Big, Big Changes Ahead for This Weekend

Have you liked the run of hot weather?
We've gone six (6) straight days with high temps of at least
87° and now three (3) straight days with a high of 90°+.

THURSDAY FORECAST THOUGHT:
Our forecasted high for Thursday is expected to be around 90°, but we'll have a 50/50 chance for thunderstorms. Don't be caught outdoors during these potentially dangerous storms. Look at the video in the next paragraph.

INCREDIBLE VIDEO:
If you've not had an opportunity to seeing the lightning video from south Jackson, TN area from September 10th, please take a look at my previous post by scrolling down this page...it could save your life.

THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH THE WEEKEND:
As promised in the title, we have big changes on tap for the weekend. After the LAST hot day on Thursday, thunderstorms will be possible through the evening hours. A cold front will drop down through our region and bring in some much cooler/drier air. Some of the chilliest yet of the upcoming Autumn season.

Thursday Night: Thunderstorms through midnight 64°
Friday: Sunny 78°
Friday Night: 49° (even lower in outlying areas)
Saturday: Sunny 75°
Saturday Night: 52°

Sunday's Forecast and Much More

Expect a high of 88° under partly sunny skies for this Sunday afternoon in Cookeville, TN. We cannot rule out a stray shower or thunderstorm. If we do see rain, it'll mark the first in six days. There is a great 'Did You Know' section near the end of this post.

WARMING UP:
This morning's low was 64.6°. It was the first time since last Tuesday that our low was warmer than 63°. I expect the warmer lows to continue as we're being influenced by a more southerly pattern. We're seeing our high temperatures increase the last couple of days. I expect that trend to continue all week.

SLIGHT SHOWER CHANCES EACH DAY:
We'll include a slight chance of a shower or thunderstorm each day through the 7-day forecast period. Highs will be in the upper 80's at least through Thursday with a slight moderation for the upcoming weekend and a return to sunny skies and cool nights.

HUGE INCREASE IN RAIN THIS SUMMER:
I found an interesting map posted on Facebook by the Nashville Forecast Office of the National Weather Service. The map depicts our summer rains (June through August). Just in case you are wondering our average rainfall for June to August is 13.42". I did a quick calculation that shows we had a 79% INCREASE in rainfall during those three months when compared to normal.

For those few of you without Facebook, I'll post that map below.

DID YOU KNOW?

  • The latest first hurricane to form was Gustav on September 11, 2002. We're close to setting a record for the quietest hurricane season on record. Despite dire forecasts (climate change alarmists?), this season has been a dud thus far.
  • More record lows from yesterday with Moriarty, New Mexico dropping to 45° and Weaverville, CA at 48°.
  • The record high for this date (September 8) in Cookeville was 100° in 1896 while our record low was 46° which last occurred in 1988.
  • The most rain ever recorded for this date was 1.27" in 1970
  • The average high each month since February has been BELOW NORMAL

Labor Day Forecast Thoughts

Temperatures are mainly in the middle and high 80's across the region this afternoon. Area lakes are packed as we can attest to being on Center Hill Lake.
Watch out for pop up thunderstorms which are on the increase as a front nears.
I will have a complete post later this evening with thoughts on the rest of this week along with what early winter could look like in the Cookeville area.

First Significant Rain in 11 Days

August was cooler and more wet than normal BUT we went the last 11 days with no significant precipitation. Today, on September 1, that streak came to an end with more than a 1/4" of rainfall. Some areas to our south received much more rain this morning including 1.12" on Paul Golden Road near Sparta.

TODAY'S FORECAST:
Today's forecast is for a 60% chance of thunderstorms mainly this morning with a high this afternoon of 86°. South winds will become southwest during the afternoon. For tonight, expect a 50/50 shot at scattered thunderstorms with a low of 72°.

LABOR DAY FORECAST:
Your Labor Day forecast is for a 50% chance of thunderstorms under a partly sunny sky and a high of around 86°. I don't expect it to completely ruin your outdoor activities on Monday.

THE WEEK AHEAD FORECAST:
The rest of the week is looking sunny and dry with highs in the lower 80's and lows in the lower 60's.

DID YOU KNOW?:

  • Did you know we've had a streak of 13 straight days in which the thermometer has reached at least 84° including hitting 90° the last two days in a row?
  • August, with 7.06" of rainfall, was the 6th month in a row that precipitation was above normal and the 8th time in 9 months that we exceeded our average monthly rainfall. It was also the 11th time in the last 13 months we exceeded the average.
  • Last September we saw nearly 10" of rainfall
  • The hottest days in August were this past Friday and Saturday with identical high temperatures of 90.0°. The coolest morning was August 15th at 54°. The most rain fell on August 8th with 3.69".
