Hottest Temps of 2014 This Weekend

The headlines are to expect temps hitting the mid 90's in the Cookeville area starting Thursday through the weekend. A slight chance for a garden variety summer time thunderstorm.

We hit 87° on Tuesday which is the warmest day since last Monday, August 11th. Expect temps in the low 90's for Wednesday and around 94-95° for Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. We may even be underplaying the high temps a bit, so upper 90's are a possibility with 100° highs to the west of Nashville.

Both June and July saw days where our high hit 93°, Highs over the next few days will exceed that temp.

With today's rains, August has topped 4".

Sunday Storms and Upcoming Week's Forecast

Looking at the latest radar loop you can see more storms developing over middle TN and even more streaming eastward from western sections of TN.  

In Cookeville, we've already recorded more than .50 (half inch) of rainfall and isolated locations could see as much as 2-4 inches before the rain moves out on Monday evening. 

Strong storms are possible, but I believe they will stay under the severe limits. We do, however, believe that locally heavy rainfall will occur.

With cloud cover today, temps won't warm much and will be in the mid 80's on Monday. The rest of the week will see temps approach 90° all the way through the upcoming weekend.

Another Night In The 50's; Hot Days Ahead

Expect Friday morning lows by sunrise to be in the 56-58° range for many of us. This marks the 3rd night in a row that we'll drop to the 50's. I don't think we'll go all the way to 54° like this morning.

87°/64°

FRIDAY THROUGH WEEKEND
High temps:
85° - Friday
88° - Saturday
87° - Sunday
Only a 30% chance of rain on Sunday with plenty of sunshine on both Friday and Saturday. We'll possibly drop into the 50's for a 4th night in a row Friday evening, but I'm not 100% sold on that idea. Best thunderstorm chances are Sunday night, but it is only a 50/50 proposition at this point.

Possible Shower Before Lunch; Gorgeous Rest of Week

BECOMING SUNNY LATER:
There is a very slight chance of a possible shower or thunderstorm today before lunch with sunny skies for this afternoon and a high near 80°. Currently, at 6:45 am, in Cookeville the temperature is 70°. 

STORMY MONDAY AFTERNOON:
On Monday, we had two rounds of thunderstorms roll through the area prompting a severe thunderstorm warning and a significant weather advisory. We recorded just .66" here at my weather station while areas around Carthage, TN (about 35 miles to our west) had some impressive totals including a station with 2.73". 

WET and COOL:
So far in August we've recorded two days with rain and a total of 3.22". Average August rainfall is: 3.94". Average temperatures so far this month is running about 1.7° below normal.

ANOTHER COOL SPELL:
Once we get past today, expect much cooler temperatures the rest of the week with lows in the upper 50's tonight, lower to mid 50's on Wednesday night, upper 50's on Thursday night. Highs mainly in the upper 70's to lower 80's each day with abundant sunshine.

Sunday Scattered Storms

Expect a round of thunderstorms on Sunday afternoon. Not every location will see rainfall. Highs in the mid 80's under muggy conditions.

HEAVY SATURDAY RAINS:
On Saturday evening, rain fell hard and fast in the Cookeville area. At my home, I measured 2.56". Checking deeper into my own data, I had 1.36" from 7:10 pm until 8:00 pm and another 1.07" from 8 to 9 pm.

Other high amounts in TN were:
3.39" in Madison (north of Nashville)
3.08" just east of Cookeville
2.77" at a station near my home
2.60" four miles NE of Sparta
2.57" 4.6 miles WNW of Sparta

6" of Rain in the Carolinas:
More than 6" of rain in a 24-hour period yesterday was recorded in Greenville, SC and Garner, NC.

Our upcoming week looks great starting about Wednesday with cooler temps and lower humidity levels.

Wednesday and Beyond

We awoke to a trace of rain on Wednesday morning and it was the first day in the last 3 we weren't in the 50's.

Our weather has moved into a more unstable pattern. Rain chances are 30% today and tomorrow but rise to 60% on Friday. Rain chances remain at 40% for the weekend.

Expect highs in the mid to upper 80's and lows in the upper 60's to around 70.

I don't expect the rain to completely wash out any of the next 7 days but you will need to be aware of the rain chances.

Cool Nights, Warm Days

Nice August Start:
Our run of cool evenings continue during the first several days of August. So far lows have mainly around 60° with 58.2° recorded this morning. Average low temps are 65° this time of year. We are off to another below normal month for August as the average temperature is already 4° below normal. This afternoon's high in Cookeville was 86.6°.

48-Hour Forecast:
Tonight: Clear, low 58°
Tuesday: Sunny, high 88°
Tuesday night: Clear, low 61°
Wednesday: 30% thunderstorms, high 91°

Extended Forecast:
Expect thunderstorm chances to increase for both Thursday and Friday with highs in the mid to upper 80's. Rain chances are great than 50%. Lower chances for rain this upcoming weekend with highs in the mid 80's and lows in the mid to upper 60's.

Air Quality Alert for Nashville Metro area and surrounding counties.
Areas to our west are under an Air Quality Alert issued by the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation from midnight tonight (Monday) through midnight on Tuesday night. Persons with respiratory disease such as asthma should limit prolonged exposure in the alert areas. The general public is not likely affected by this alert.

Another Chilly Night and Upcoming Weekend Forecast

Third Straight Night in The 50's
Are you liking the cool nights and warm days? 
We've had a large number of lows in the 50's this July with 9 nights thus far. Looks like #10 will happen this evening.

Thursday's Forecast
We'll start cool again with sunrise temps around 57-59° in and around Cookeville with afternoon highs 80-82° under a partly cloudy sky. A slight chance of rain showers overnight Thursday but I don't see it being a big rain event.

Friday Through The Weekend
Look for a rain/thundershower chance each day with highs in the low to mid 80's and lows in the low to mid 60's.

Next week promises a warm and sunny start with highs in the upper 80's and low in the mid to upper 60's.

NATIONAL HEATSTROKE PREVENTION DAY
Every 10 days an unattended child dies in a hot car. Let's stop these preventable tragedies. National Heatstroke Prevention Day is July 31. Since 1998, more than 620 kids have died from heatstroke when left unattended in a vehicle. More than half were simply forgotten; something that can happen to the most loving and caring parents when their routine is changed. Other deaths occurred when a child was intentionally left in a vehicle or climbing into a vehicle on their own and was unable to get out.

Storms Rumbling Overnight

THUNDERBOOMERS:
You may hear some rumbles of thunder overnight as storms are poised just to our north over central and south central areas of Kentucky. They are marching quickly to the south. I've posted radar links to both Wunderground and the National 
Weather Service below.

COOL MORNINGS!
Saturday's high was 87° after starting out the second morning in a row in the 50's. (59.1° at 5:56 am). It is the 8th morning in July that we've been under 60°. I expect we'll see 2 more next week. Quite a month!

HOT SUNDAY:
Sunday is expected to be a very hot day with heat index readings in Cookeville around 97-100° and a chance of storms mainly in the afternoon hours. Winds will be gusty from 15-20 mph. High temps will be around 91°.

MUCH COOLER NEXT WEEK:
A big cool down is expected Monday through Wednesday with highs in the 70's and lows in the 50's.

Back In The 90's

We're finally back in the 90's after more than a week where temps dropped into the upper 60's for actual high temperatures! It felt hot today.

JULY 22 ALMANAC:

Hottest: 100° in 1926 (normal: 87°)
Coolest: 53° in 2007 (normal: 66°)

We saw no rainfall today (Tuesday) across the Cookeville area (most showers/storms confined to northeast plateau and southeast TN near Chattanooga and on into NE Alabama and NW Georgia) but have a 40% for Wednesday and a 70% chance of thunderstorms for Wednesday night. I think we will top 90° again on Wednesday. Thunderstorms continue on Thursday early but then we expect to slowly clear with highs in the mid 80's and lows in the low 60's on Thursday night.

For Friday expect a sunny and very nice day with a high of 85° and a low of 62°. Much of the same for Saturday with sunny skies and a high of 85°. The full forecast is below.

Summer Makes It's Return

I'm sure you've noticed the increase warmth today (Sunday) across the area. We've been as warm as 85° this afternoon. Some have seen a few stray showers and thunderstorms, but nothing compared to the coverage of showers the last two days.

WINTER OUTLOOK MAP:

The guys at http://firsthandweather.com/ have released a preliminary 2014-2015 winter forecast and it shows areas east of the Rockies with a winter of well below normal temps and average to above average rain/snow. I'm sure some teachers and students will love this prediction.

Like Living in Seattle But Changes Are Ahead

Tired of the rain? I've got bad news for you!

Looks like this first round will wrap up this morning, but a second round will be on their way later this afternoon. Thundershowers will only be very isolated in our area with highs just in the mid 70's (about 15°-20° below normal).

COOKEVILLE BY THE NUMBERS:

• 1.70" of rain recorded in last 24 hours (almost a record breaker for this date)
• Friday's high was just 68.8° which breaks a record from 2009 for the coolest high temperature recorded in Cookeville, TN on that date by 3°.
• 53° was the coldest low temp on record, by the way, on Thursday morning! 

SUNDAY AND THE WEEK AHEAD:
Sunday's forecast calls for a slight chance of a thunderstorm with a high of 83°. The week ahead promises a more summer type pattern with slight afternoon thunderstorm chances and highs in the upper 80's.

The end of next and the weekend just might be sunny, warm, and include no rain!

Can You Believe It Is July?

Chilly tonight folks. Hard to believe it is July 16th. Just for fun a 1950's thermometer.

JUST HOW CHILLY?
Record low for the overnight is 50° in 1945.
Historically the second to third week of July is one of our hotter weeks of the summer.

THUNDERSTORMS POSSIBLE FRIDAY THRU NEXT WEEK

Here Comes The Cold (Again)

Snow showers develop after 3 am as winds turn to the north northwest after frontal passage. Gusts could be as high as 20 mph. Some locations will see as much as one-half inch of accumulation by morning. Low temperature by sunrise of 22°.

WEAR COAT, GLOVES, AND SCARF MONDAY AND TUESDAY

MONDAY'S VERY COLD FORECAST:
20% chance of snow before noon under a cloudy sky with falling temperatures all day. Not expecting any additional accumulation. Gusty winds up to 25 mph will make the day feel quick cutting on exposed skin. Expect temps around 5 pm to be in the middle teens.

BRUTAL COLD ONCE AGAIN:
On Monday night, a wind chill advisory is in effect for below zero wind chill readings from midnight through noon on Tuesday. Very cold with a low of 8°. A high of 19° is expected on Tuesday with sunny skies.

**WIND CHILL ADVISORY**

Tuesday night will be very cold once again with a low of 5°. With any snow cover, we may end up even colder but winds will die down.

Wednesday will see warmer temps with a high of 28°.

We'll probably end up around 82 hours or so below freezing after a 90+ hour run last week. Thursday will finally see us break out from freezing and get up to 41°.

The warm-up continues through the weekend with possible highs in the 50's both Saturday and Sunday! Don't get too comfortable as winter still has a ways to go.

Gorgeous Sunday; But Near Zero Temps Returning

We're waking to temps in the upper 30's this morning at 9:00 am after an early morning low of 18°. Expect a mostly sunny sky with a high of 52° along with gusty south southwesterly winds from 15-25 mph. After that it is all downhill through at least Wednesday.

**CAUTION: SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT**

RAIN TO SNOW OVERNIGHT:
Tonight, a round of rain and snow develops as winds will turn to the northwest. We'll be right on the line for rain/snow so it is possible we'll awaken to no snow on Monday morning, but temperatures will be falling all day on Monday. We'll be down around 22° by 5 pm. As far as snow goes, it should all wrap up on Monday morning. Expect a blustery day, so dress appropriately.

BELOW ZERO WIND CHILL VALUES MONDAY NIGHT:
Monday night with be another brutally cold night with strong winds and extremely cold temperatures. Lows will bottom around 5° with a 15-25 mph wind causing wind chill readings as low as -10°.

UPPER TEENS TUESDAY WITH SINGLE DIGIT LOWS:
Tuesday will be very cold with partly sunny skies. We'll struggle to get out of the teens with a low a low on Tuesday night of 4°. Wednesday temperatures moderate a bit to 28° but we'll be back into the teens on Wednesday night. Even warmer on Thursday with highs in the lower 40's.

WARM UP: Finally Above Freezing

After more than 97 hours below freezing, the thermometer topped 32° in Cookeville at 12:22 pm. This run of frigid weather started back on Tuesday, January 21 at 10:51 am.

SNOWY SATURDAY MORNING:
Cookeville saw snow flurries this morning and sleet during the later mid-morning hours. Roads quickly become covered and side streets were a bit slick. Traffic flow kept main roads from getting any accumulation. Just to our north and east, snow quickly piled up on roads.

Saturday Morning Snowfall Amounts:
Celina/Clay County: Half-inch
Byrdstown/Pickett County: Half to One Inch; slick roads
Jamestown/Fentress County: Up to Two Inches: slick roads

Temperatures have moderated to 40° at 3 pm. We expect a partly cloudy night and turning very cold again with lows around 16° by sunrise on Sunday.

MINI HEAT WAVE:
Sunday will be the nicest day in quite some time with sunny skies early and a high of 53°.

Expect snow showers overnight Sunday with a low of 25°

BITTER COLD AIR RETURNS:
Cold on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday with highs around 30° on Monday, 16° on Tuesday, and 25° on Wednesday. Lows will be in the single digits all three nights with the Wednesday morning giving us the best chance to be BELOW ZERO.

More Accumulating Snow for Cookeville Area

Do you know how long we've been below freezing?
The answer is below, so keep reading!

BELOW ZERO THIS MORNING:
It's going to be another cold night for the area on Friday night. Currently, at 8:00 pm, we stand at 20°. Friday's high was 27.0° at 3:41 pm. It actually felt quite nice with the sunshine if you could find an area to shelter from the wind. We started out Friday morning at -1.1° at 6:19 am.

MUCH COLDER THAN ALASKA:
Thursday's high of 18° was nearly 30° BELOW NORMAL!
Juneau, Alaska was 47° for the high yesterday!

**WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY**

FRIDAY NIGHT/SATURDAY FORECAST:
Clouds will be on the increase and along with that we'll see the temps rise a few degrees toward daybreak. Snow chances will also be on the increase and we can't rule out a 1/2" to 1" accumulation locally in Cookeville with higher amounts in the highest elevations of the Plateau. Saturday's high should be around 37° with snow wrapping up around lunch time. Expect gusty winds to 25 mph.

VERY COLD SATURDAY NIGHT:
Cold on Saturday night with clear skies late and a low of 15°

SNOW POSSIBLE AGAIN SUNDAY NIGHT:
Sunshine and warmer on Sunday with a high of 46° but we will see winds become gusty around 20 mph. Snow redevelops on Sunday night with a low of 29°. I'm not excited about any accumulation so be prepared to go to school on Monday.

BRUTAL COLD RETURNS:
Monday will see temps barely rise to 32° with gusty north winds to 20 mph. This will usher in even colder air and we'll be back into the single digits once again on Monday night. Tuesday will be very cold with highs in the lower 20's and lows again in the single digits near 0°. We may even have to tweak those temps down a few more degrees as we get closer to the event.

Wednesday's high is only expected to be around 24° under a sunny sky.

Looking out ahead, we may actually 'warm' to the 40's next weekend with rain chances!

Brutally Cold Once Again

The polar vortex has returned. Temperatures this Wednesday morning are just 2° in Cookeville, 3° in Sparta, and 1° in Crossville. In Cumberland Cove (near Monterey), a station is reporting -2°.

LIST OF SNOW TOTALS IN MIDDLE TN ON 1/21/14

We'll see highs moderate to 27° later this afternoon with sunny skies.

We're under a Special Weather Statement for MORE cold air to arrive late tonight.

Look for brisk north-northwest winds to pick up and cause temperatures and wind chills to plummet. Temperatures will be around 10° by morning and wind chill values near zero. I do expect temperatures to rise much on Thursday with highs around 17° but it'll feel like ZERO much of the day.

Thursday night's low will be down around 5°.

Friday's high around 26°

Next possible round of snow is expected on Friday and Saturday.

Gorgeous Monday, But......

Get out and enjoy this unseasonably warm weather today (Monday) across the Cookeville area. We'll be in the mid 50's this afternoon under plenty of sunshine. Winds will be fairly light making the day feel quite comfortable.

****SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT****

TUESDAY SNOW POSSIBLE:
Tonight, clouds increase and we'll drop into the lower 30's by morning. A very strong Arctic cold front will usher in cold temps and strong north northwesterly winds. I expect temperatures to fall most of the afternoon on Tuesday. We can't rule out a period of snow showers on Tuesday with possible accumulations. Expect lows by Wednesday morning to be in the single digits.

LONG PERIOD BELOW FREEZING:
As of now it appears we will be below freezing in Cookeville from 7 am on Tuesday all the way through Saturday at noon. You'll want to make sure your pipes are protected from freezing and your pets are either brought indoors or have adequate protection from the cold.

SECOND ROUND OF COLD:
A reinforcement shot of cold air arrives on Thursday with Friday morning's lows again in the single digits.

THE WEEKEND AHEAD:
As of now, the upcoming weekend is expected to be above freezing with high temps around 40° both days. This is well below normal of 47° for our daytime average high and 26° for our average nighttime low.
