The National Weather Service in Nashville has issued a Wind
Advisory...which is in effect from 9 am this morning to midnight
CST tonight.

* Timing...9 am this morning through midnight CST tonight.

* Winds...sustained winds from the south of at least 15 to 25 mph
  with gusts around 40 mph.

* Impacts...expect winds this strong to blow around loose
  items...and impact exposed areas such as lakes and rivers...
  and make travel in high profile vehicles difficult.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Wind Advisory means that winds of 25 to 39 mph and/or gusts of
35 to 57 mph are expected. Winds this strong can make driving
difficult...especially for high profile vehicles. Use extra
caution.

Window Rattling Winds

Expect a noisy overnight across the entire region as winds will gust to 45 mph.

We've already seen top gusts over 30 mph and anticipate this continuing through Wednesday afternoon. Temperatures are in the upper 60's and that will be good breeding grounds for potentially strong storms by daybreak on Wednesday.

Nashville westward into Arkansas are under a Tornado Watch overnight and at 10:30 pm, strong storms are affecting all of the counties on the Mississippi River. This line will slowly move across Tennessee during the overnight hours. I still believe we are in the SLIGHT risk category for severe storms in the Cookeville and surrounding areas BUT the locations west of Nashville are in the MODERATE risk area.

Strong to Severe Weather Overnight Tonight

A very warm and windy day ahead for the Upper Cumberland region including Cookeville and surrounding areas. We'll see highs in the upper 60's with some locations nearing 70° today. Winds will be sustained at 10 to 20 mph with gusts to 35 mph.

Overnight, showers and thunderstorms develop after midnight with the great potential (threat) for severe weather around daybreak. The low of just 59° with winds running 20 to 30 mph and gusting to 45 mph. Rain chances 100%.

Early morning thunderstorms on Wednesday with some possibly becoming severe. The high will be 62° early but will fall throughout the day. The winds will become westerly at 20 to 30 mph with gusts to 40 mph.

Then, we fall off the proverbial temperature cliff with lows on Wednesday night of 29° and a slight chance of snow mixing with leftover rain showers. Cold Thursday with a high of 41°. Snow chances Thursday night with a low 24° and only 35° on Friday.

Snow In The Forecast

*Morning Update*

Winds have continued to roar across middle TN with gusts to 33 mph here in Cookeville while behind the cold front, Jackson has seen winds gust to 44 mph. Expect winds to become even stronger after frontal passage late this afternoon. Gust between 40 and 50 mph are expected from later in the afternoon through the late evening hours.

A Transition To Snow Tonight:
Rain will fall heavy at time this morning and will transition here in the Cookeville area after dark over to snow showers. I believe accumulations will be limited to the higher elevations of the northern and eastern plateau areas. Here in Cookeville, the best chances to see some snow showers will be in the 8 pm-midnight range with a light dusting at best.

Bitter Cold Friday:
Friday's forecast is going to be a memorable one. We'll start a bit cloudy but clear quickly and the winds will continue to be strong but we add a different caveat to the mix as temps won't get out of the 30's on Friday making the wind chill (or feels like) down into the upper teens to lower 20's. Bundle up appropriately.

Windy Sunday

The big news is the wind where we'll see sustained winds this afternoon from 15 to 25 mph and gusts to 40 mph. There is a WIND ADVISORY in effect for today from 10 am to 5 pm CST.

Warm today with mostly cloudy skies. We'll reach 66° this afternoon in Cookeville with warmer temperatures to our west and slightly cooler temperatures in the higher elevations around Monterey, Jamestown, and Crossville.  Since midnight, we've seen the highest wind gust of 24 mph at 5:53 this morning. Expect those winds to increase as we move toward the afternoon hours.

For Monday through mid-week, expect rain to develop and we may see upwards of an inch or more through Wednesday with the heaviest likely on Monday night and Tuesday.

Tennessee Tech University plays for an OVC league title in football this upcoming Saturday. Lets get out and support the Golden Eagles. As of now, the forecast for Saturday, November 19th, 2011 is expected to be mostly sunny with a high temperature of 60°.

Windy Friday with Storms Late

Batten down the hatches and be prepared for winds to really pick up from the south. We expect sustained winds of 20-30 mph today with gusts to 40 mph. This is out ahead of a strong cold front that is bearing down on middle Tennessee. Highs are expected to be around 70°.

Did you know that...

Dubbed "The Black Blizzard", the most notorious dust storm of the dust bowl era struck the Plains on this date in 1935. Clouds of dust were visible from Atlantic Ocean shipping lanes and huge, black dust clouds were seen over Washington, D.C. The fine dust was created by farming techniques of the era and was easily made airborne by wind. By the fall of 1938, rain would bring an end to the Dust Bowl era.

Sunday Night Update

Expect breezy weather overnight and all day on Monday. A Wind Advisory is in effect through 7 pm on Monday for wind gusts in the 15 to 30 mph range sustained up to 40 mph gusts.

SEVERE WEATHER POTENTIAL
We are also looking at the potential for severe weather along with very heavy rainfall on Monday and Monday night. Timing will be critical.

Our worst weather is expected in the 4 to 8 pm range.

Any severe thunderstorm that develops may have damaging wind, large hail and possibly a tornado.

Heavy rains in the 1.5" to 2" range will be common with a possible 3+" amounts in some spots.

Conditions could be changing rapidly and you are encouraged to stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio and your local media outlets.

In the Cookeville area, local media outlets would include local radio (like the Cookeville Communications and JWC Family of stations), television (like Channel's 2, 4, 5, and 17)...any other TV stations will not have weather updates that are timely nor credible, if at all.

Anniversary of April 3, 1974 Tornado Outbreak

More on that outbreak below. First, a very windy day ahead for your Sunday (Wind Advisory in effect...see below) with warmer temperatures ahead of a strong cold front that will produce showers and thunderstorms on Monday. We'll see a high of 75° on Sunday with gusty winds from 15 to 20 mph up to 40 mph! Be careful on area lakes.

Today is the 37th anniversary of the Super Outbreak of Tornadoes from 1974. There are several websites dedicated to one of the most destructive days in weather in American History. 315 people died, including 47 in Tennessee, and 10 right here in Putnam County. Here is the text of a report: "Between 8:00 and 9:00 p.m. CDT, 9 persons were killed and I died of a heart attack as a tornado (82) swept through Putnam County southeast of Cookeville;"
