It's a hot afternoon across middle TN, and some locations are seeing storms. Not all of us will get rain today, but those who do may see some brief, heavy showers or thunderstorms.

Temperatures are mainly in the mid 80's to lower 90's. Dew point readings are in the middle 70's creating a stifling-type of day.

Window Rattling Winds

Expect a noisy overnight across the entire region as winds will gust to 45 mph.

We've already seen top gusts over 30 mph and anticipate this continuing through Wednesday afternoon. Temperatures are in the upper 60's and that will be good breeding grounds for potentially strong storms by daybreak on Wednesday.

Nashville westward into Arkansas are under a Tornado Watch overnight and at 10:30 pm, strong storms are affecting all of the counties on the Mississippi River. This line will slowly move across Tennessee during the overnight hours. I still believe we are in the SLIGHT risk category for severe storms in the Cookeville and surrounding areas BUT the locations west of Nashville are in the MODERATE risk area.

WELCOME TO AUTUMN:
Look for rain showers to move into our area this morning. We are mainly in the upper 50's around the Cookeville, TN area. We'll be cloudy but I do expect the rain to end and skies will become sunny later this afternoon. Cool with a high of only 70°. Say goodbye to summer as it is the first, official full-day of Autumn.

Morning Showers, Possibly Heavy

SHOWERS TODAY:
Look for morning showers across middle Tennessee this morning with some areas seeing possibly moderate to heavy showers. This will occur east of Interstate 65 and will move slowly toward the Cookeville area. Expect a high temperature of around 78-80° this afternoon. Speaking of rain, we've received another .07" during the last 24 hours and are nearing 7" for the month of September. The complete rundown of the numbers are located in the Daily Almanac below.

SUNSHINE COMING:
We should see that burning ball of fire reappear in the sky on Thursday with intermittent clouds but rains return for Thursday night and Friday. Another round of sunny skies is expected on Saturday with cooler weekend temperatures. Rain again on Sunday!

Heavy rains are affecting west Tennessee this Monday morning and are expected to move eastward and be in our area later today through this evening. Tonight, the rain chances go down and we'll keep rain in the forecast off and on all the way through Friday. Expect highs today to reach just 71° but the rest of this week will mainly be in the middle to upper 70's with cooler weather expected by Friday.

After a few days of below average temperatures, we are right back in the heat once again. This morning's low was a comfortable 64.1°, but expect highs for your Thursday to run up to 90° with a 20% chance for a scattered thunderstorm. The current local radar is below.

Sunday Storms

We'll include storm chances for your Sunday across the Cookeville, TN area as strong storms are rumbling at this hour (7:15 am CDT) near the Nashville metro area. Those storms should march across middle Tennessee this morning and move east of Nashville later in the morning hours. Expect a high of around 87° with a 40% chance of storms. A slight chance of storms tonight, low 71° and a 30% chance of storms on Monday, high 91°.

We recorded just .05" yesterday from morning rains. The anticipated afternoon rains never materialized or were very light in nature. The northern portions of middle TN received the most rain with 1.5" to 2.00" reported near Carthage and Gallatin. Storms today will dump varying amounts across the state as well.

Best rain chances come Monday as the expected increase in moisture from a frontal boundary is about 24 hours late arriving. Heavy rainfall is expected with this event on Monday. Partly to mostly cloudy skies for your Saturday across the Upper Cumberland area as a storm system moves across areas just to our north. I don't think we'll see much, if any, rain today from that particular system. Speaking of that current storm system, *see photo above from Kansas City Star - kansascity.com* the St. Louis, MO airport was struck by an apparent tornado last night and was closed. Major damage, according to CNN.com

Be On The Look Out (BOLO)

7:25 pm update...
Heavy rains now at my home. Arrival is a bit late, but here nonetheless. Intensity has backed off quite a bit compared to earlier in the day...that is GOOD news!! Cold air will arrive overnight and great the Black Friday early shoppers with a possibility of frozen precip. No road problems or accumulation expected.


Very strong line of storms is marching through Middle Tennessee generating numerous warnings.

Rain Chances This Afternoon

RAIN APPROACHING: Look for rain chances to increase this afternoon with a high of 82° in the Cookeville area. The rain will hang around through at least Wednesday night.

Storms Possible Late Today and Tonight

RAIN ON IT'S WAY: After a high of 72° (warmest day since Oct. 30th) on Wednesday, we'll see temperatures pull back a bit today with highs around 63°. Rain makes it way into our area by afternoon (we've already seen some, .06", this morning) and I can't rule out a strong storm or two. The best chances will be back toward the southern and western sections of Middle Tennessee. Thunderstorms will last into Thursday night as a strong cold front approaches from the west. Expect a chilly Friday with highs only around 50°, it'll feel colder as the day will be mostly cloudy. We get a much nicer day on Saturday with highs in the 60's, but storms return for Sunday.

Looks like we'll see rain most of today, tomorrow, and Thursday. Don't forget your umbrella! High temperatures will only be in the mid and upper 70's. Precip chances are 60% today, 70% on Wednesday, and 60% on Thursday. Some locations could see heavy rainfall at times. Here in Cookeville, it will be more of the off and on variety. Most of the heavier rain should be back to the west toward Nashville.

Quite a rainstorm this morning before dawn across the Cookeville area. Radar, at 7:25 a.m., shows several lines of storms rumbling through Tennessee. We have a 50/50 shot of storms the rest of the day. Storm chances will be off and on through the next 5 days.

**RAINFALL MEASUREMENTS**

Speaking of rain, we've recorded another 1.20" this morning, giving us 8.04" for July. Normally, we average 4.73" during this month. For the year, we stand at 41.69"...typically by the end of July, we've recorded 33.96...as you can see we are nearly 8" ahead of normal.

Rain will be sticking with us over the next few days.  Already recorded .32" overnight from the current system. Some locations in West Tennessee have more than 2.5" in their rain gauges this morning. We're continuing to monitor a potentially developing situation for Friday night and Saturday which may result in some severe weather for Middle Tennessee.

School kids will be eagerly waking up to find, as the open their curtains/blinds/etc., no snow on the ground this morning in Cookeville, TN.  Ventured out at 5:15 a.m. for an observation and found a cloudy sky with .05" in my CoCoRaHS rain gauge and not much else.  The morning temperature is 39°...hope all of them did their homework last evening.   *Latest Radar Information*

We may see some precipitation before noon.  Don't think it will amount to much.  The next shot for precip comes on Friday night into Saturday with Saturday being chilly and wet.  Possible snow again through Saturday night.  The Arctic blast is set to arrive early next week with another interesting snow event around Monday night into Tuesday.  Stay tuned on this.

Precipitation measured in six of the first eight days of 2009.  We currently stand at 3.10".  Normal precipitation for January is 5.1", so we are off to an excellent start!

A winter storm system ushers in one of the worst cold outbreaks in mid state history. A strong cold front brings 3.7" of snow to Nashville, and drops the temperature from a high of 35 degrees to -8 the following morning. For the next 3 days, the temperature does not rise above 8 degrees, and the low temperature drops to 0 or below for five consecutive mornings, falling to -9 degrees on the morning of January 11.
