The low was on July 22 @ 57.1
We measured 3.40" of rain making July our wettest month since January.

My Wonderful Daughter

Since we're in a hot pattern with no rain or 'excitement', I thought I'd post something different today. This picture is from our church. Our daughter was in a 'human video' today. It was very powerful and I am proud of her for participating in drama. :) As you can see, our congregation gave them a standing ovation. Sorry for the poor quality pictures. Our sanctuary is BIG and my digi camera isn't great.
The human video was to the song "Stained Glass Masquerade" from the CD "Lifesong" from Casting Crowns.

Upcoming Weekend Forecast

Looks like the rain will stay in our forecast through the weekend with a little less of a chance by Sunday.

For Friday, we'll be looking at a 30% chance of storms increasing to 50% chance by Friday night and on Saturday. By Sunday, chances decrease to 20% as a front will move through.

As we look into the future, the upcoming workweek could hold some HOT temperatures for us. 90's will be in our forecast.

On this date in 1952, Nashville hits 103 after a morning low of 63. A whopping 40-degree difference thanks to an unusually dry air mass. *thanks to the NWS for this info*

Big Thunderstorm This Afternoon

The + sign you see in the center of red is our location

Around 4 pm, we were hit with quite a thunderstorm. Strong winds, frequent and dangerous lightning and heavy rain combined to make things quite interesting. I've seen one downed tree this evening. Rain is continuing to fall.

At 5:55 pm, we've had .70 and the latest radar look indicates some heavy rain showers to our north and they could make it into the Cookeville area in the next hour or so.

Storms Pop Up!

Most areas saw no rain, however I was able to capture these images just to the south of us. My rain gauge, though, is dry. We should see shower chances increase through the rest of the week.
Our forecast is listed here. Some weather history from the NWS...on this date in 1947, Nashville drops to a low of 51, the coolest reading ever for July.

Beautiful Saturday

A picture of a friend of mine and his wife taking a ride on the Sea-Doo. The lake was just perfect on Saturday for our houseboat outing. We had about 20 people with us.
Our Saturday sunset was beyond words. The lake was smooth and peaceful.
Sunday's highs will make it into the lower 80's. Several of our towns saw lows this morning in the 50's. Some set record-lows and I'm waiting to see who they are. This is summertime weather that I like!

Beautiful Day!

The cold front has definitely passed through our area. We are currently at 82 degrees and winds are mostly from the Northeast around 3-5 miles per hour. The humidity is just 53%. This is a big change from the last several days. We expect lows tonight to drop to near 60 and I believe outer-lying communities could see upper 50's. I love it!

The big rain that I spoke of late last evening fell apart as it approached us and I recorded nothing in the rain gauge last night, even though the thunder roared for a while late!

Our weekend forecast calls for highs in the mid 80's with lower humidity. Should be mainly clear and simply GORGEOUS!

Next chance for rain won't be until Wednesday.

BIG Changes Coming

We'll see HOT temperatures here in Middle Tennessee on Thursday, but Friday and our weekend promise to be quite nice!

Click for Forecast!

Temperatures on Friday will struggle to break 80 after seeing heat index temps pushing 100 degrees in some locations of Middle Tennessee over the last couple days.

We need the rain and hopefully as this front passes, we'll get some.

Venice, Florida Sunset

Does it really get any better than this?
The sunset shot was taken on Venice Beach near the South Jetty near our condo. I have many more of these great pictures!

Tennessee Crop Report

Interesting information from our latest crop report.

The Agricultural Summary show that scattered showers, thunderstorms, and cooler temperatures during the past week helped boost crop and pasture conditions in many areas of the State. A more general rain will be needed, however, for conditions to rebound from the prolonged hot, dry weather. Some areas received substantial amounts of precipitation last week, while others were relatively dry.

There were 6 days were considered suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture levels were rated 31 percent very short, 38 percent short, and 31 percent adequate. Subsoil moisture levels were rated 43 percent very short, 38 percent short, and 19 percent adequate.

Both temperatures and rainfall across the State averaged below normal last week. The only exception was in the southwest portion of the State, which averaged above normal rainfall.

Precipitation amounts versus normal show:

Cookeville at 18.46" (13.37" below normal)
Savannah at 17.95 (14.94" below normal)

The best showing in the state is Clarksville at 20.64 (7.69" below normal)

We'll need some significant and widespread rainfall to make the differences before year end.

Venice, FL Weather Station

Owned and maintained by National Data Buoy Center, this station is located on the beautiful Venice Fishing Pier. We had an opportunity to visit the location of the station and the city of Venice, FL. My wife, daughter, and I stayed at the Quarterdeck Resort. We highly recommend this property. The managers were just awesome. The facility was small and quiet. We enjoyed the condo, the pool, and the beach. If you desire accomodations that aren't of the high-rise (packed in like sardines) variety, then the Quarterdeck is your place! I'll post more pictures of the Quarterdeck and the beach later.

Great Sunset Photo's!

WOW! Does it get any better than this?

Rain Overnight!

Thanks to Weather Underground for the Radar snap.

About 1:15 this morning, I was awoken by thunder! Then, a bit later, by the sweet sound of rain falling upon our roof. More thunder, then more rain. Checking the rain gauge, we received .59 inches here at home.

Rockford .75
Oak Ridge .60
Cookeville .59 (.52 just around the corner)

Storms West of Cookeville, TN

While storms are rumbling in sections of northern Middle Tennessee, southern Middle Tennessee, and West Tennessee, we continue to be dry here on the Cumberland Plateau. Most of these thunderstorms will fall apart after sunset.

Alabama has seen it's share once again of STRONG weather. Reports at this hour show strong storms in northwest sections of the neighbor to our south. (Thanks to AlabamaWx)

Our outlook over the next several days as we head into the weekend is for temperatures to be in the mid and upper 80's with no significant opportunites for rain.

I'll post some Independence Day photos in a little while

90 Day Outlook

The Climate Prediction Center has released it's 90-day outlook. Here in Tennessee, the outlook is not what most of us want to see. Above normal temperatures and below normal precipitation.

David Glenn in Chattanooga has posted an excellent synopsis on his blog. Check it out.

Storm Pictures (Part 4)

Pictures from a webcam that is high atop our Drama Center and Police Department. It can be reached by going here

Deerfield Beach, Florida

HOLY COW!!! What a picture! Taken on Monday evening, July 2nd

Storm Pictures (Part 3)

More storm damage from Friday, June 29th here in Cookeville. All of the damage was from an East South Easterly direction. This is very odd for our part of the country. You are looking south and this first picture. The damage is a roof of a Quizno Sub. Note Jack In The Box and Longhorn Steakhouse in the background.
This is a building right below the one you are viewing above. It has a Baskin Robbins in it along with a mattress store and several other things. Note the sheet metal wrapped around the satellite dish. Best Western is the motel in the background and in the far background, the Tennessee mountains!
Picture #3 is storm damage at Nick's Restaurant which is next door to the two buildings above. They sustained soffett damage and other roof damage (some of which is viewable). Nick's also lost one face of their on-premise sign (not pictured). Side note on Nicks. It has been a stable, wonderful restaurant in Cookeville for the past 36 years. Nick Philson and his family are excellent people. We love going there for a GREAT meal.
The 4th of July forecast is looking hot and dry!
