Beautiful Afternoon on Wednesday

0 Great Comments
FOG THEN SUNSHINE: Be careful this morning as you head out for work and school. Foggy conditions are making visibilities, in some cases, down to less than 1/4th of mile. The fog should burn off later this morning and we're looking at sunny skies this afternoon with a high around 65°. Even warmer for Thursday, high 77°. Storms move in for the weekend. While I don't believe, at this point, we'll see the intensity of the last weekend's tornadic weather, I do see strong thunderstorms both Saturday and Sunday. We'll continue to monitor this developing weather event.

COOL WITH RAIN TODAY:
Once again we'll only be in the upper 50's today with a 70% of chance of rain showers. Could see a thunderstorm or two, but I think that is a very slim chance. Even warmer on Thursday with sunshine and 76°. Watching possible strong storm chances by Saturday.

After quite a crazy day on Saturday with watches and warnings all day long, Sunday will be much quieter with sunshine early giving way to clouds and some showers later this afternoon. 3:50 PM UPDATE:
Not to downplay our current situation by any means, but if severe weather does not develop, we can thank the fact we didn't see warmer temperatures this afternoon and higher dew point numbers. Again, I'm not saying (by any stretch of imagination) we are out of the woods...just making an observation about the temperature/dew point. We still have a volatile atmosphere. Watching multiple areas of rotation in storms west of Nashville. CONCERN REMAINS for many portions of Middle TN. It has gotten quite dark here in the last 10 minutes here in Cookeville.

2:45 PM UPDATE:
Strong storms are marching across Tennessee at this hour. There are many Severe Thunderstorm Warnings in effect as of this post. A Tornado Watch continues to be in effect until 9 pm. Our friends  in Mississippi and Alabama are dealing with tornadoes and severe storms. As I said earlier, Yazoo City, MS has been struck by an F3 or F4 tornado and there is significant damage. The storm containing that tornado has moved into NE Mississippi/NW Alabama. There are unconfirmed fatalities in Mississippi.

1:20 PM UPDATE:
Tornado Watch until 9 pm tonight for Putnam and surrounding counties. LINK TO NWS, remember a Tornado Watch means conditions are favorable for development of severe weather including tornadoes. While we are not currently under the gun, watch for continuing development.

1:00 PM UPDATE:
Significant tornado has struck Yazoo City, MS. Early indications from storm spotters are this one may have  been an EF-4. These are long-track tornadoes that are on the ground for many miles. Pictures of the damage are showing quite a bit of damage in that town. Back here in Cookeville, we are watching storm development back to our west. Our atmosphere is very unstable. Dr. Greg Forbes says the tornado condition number for the Nashville area is a 7...that means conditions are very favorable for dangerous weather conditions. FLOOD STATEMENT for Davidson, Maury, and Williamson Counties in Middle TN. Very strong storms over Middle TN.

12:30 UPDATE
New Hazardous Weather Outlook has just been issued. Hearing of 30 homes flattened near Jackson, MS. Will try to get an update on that. Also hearing about a large tornado in Yazoo City, MS.

12:15 UPDATE
It is going to be quiet for a bit, but this is not the end of the risk of severe weather. Quite a bit of development back to our south and west that will move through this afternoon. Please stay 'weather-aware'.....

12:00 NOON UPDATE
ALL OF MIDDLE TN now under a 'HIGH RISK' for severe weather today. This is a particularly dangerous situation. The atmosphere is heated up and continuing to be very favorable for the development of strong storms. Please continue to keep up with the latest information. *STORM PREDICTION CENTER*

11:45 AM UPDATE
Things may get quiet here for a little bit with very light rain and little, if any, lightning & thunder. Please do not let your guard down as we do expect strong storms to develop this afternoon. Continue to stay abreast of the latest weather situation. After each update, I am posting a link to a site that I believe is VERY IMPORTANT in keeping up with the weather. 11:15 AM UPDATE
Skies have continued to darken across Cookeville and thunder is rumbling (quite loud at times). Additionally, the raindrops are large. We see quite a line of storms lining up back to our south and west. You'll see the occasional heavy rain with lightning pass through over the next 30 minutes. The most severe storms at this moment are located in southwest Middle TN west of Interstate 65 and south of Interstate 40. *NWS-NASHVILLE web site

11:00 AM UPDATE
Rumbling thunder across the city of Cookeville. Received a report of heavy rain down near Center Hill Dam just a few minutes ago. A lot of strong to severe reports coming from southwestern Middle TN just across the borders with MS and AL. Please continue to stay up on the latest with the weather. More soon. *NASHVILLEWX.com* (a service of News 2)

10:30 AM UPDATE
Skies are darkening across the Cookeville area. The strong weather is back to our west and our south. We'll probably see some showers develop ahead of the strong storms. EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT WEATHER PAGE. Southern Middle TN is having the most development at this time. We'll see development in our area after the noon hour. More as conditions warrant or advisories are issued.

VERY BUSY WEATHER DAY ACROSS MIDDLE TN: With many outdoor functions going on, it is very important to stay in touch for possible severe weather. I do know that MIX 92.9 in Nashville will be simulcasting the News 2 weather folks should a tornado be on the ground. A tornado watch has recently been issued for counties just to our west through 2 pm. I do think we'll see a watch issued, for us, a little later this morning. Additionally, today is one of those three or four days across Middle TN where the potential for damaging storms is great.

WHAT WE KNOW: Here is what we know. We know that the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has us under a moderate risk for severe weather. This is the first severe event possibility of the spring season. We also know there is a risk for long-track tornadoes today. I cannot stress enough the importance of keeping an eye on the weather. We know the SPC has placed portions of West TN under a rare 'PDS' or a Particulary Dangerous Situation tornado watch box.

Weather History for This Date
April 24, 1975 - A tornado strikes Mayland (in Cumberland County) killing one and injuring four other people. It stays on the ground for two miles.

Severe Weather Possible Saturday

0 Great Comments

STRONG RISK OF SEVERE WEATHER
There is an increasing potential for strong to severe weather for much of our area on Saturday. According to the National Weather Service's forecast office in Nashville, a strong upper level storm system will move out of the southern plains today and bring a chance for strong thunderstorms as early as late tonight.
By early Saturday, some some storms could become severe (more likely in West Tennessee), ahead of an approaching upper level disturbance, with the threat of severe weather continuing throughout the day Saturday. As we move toward the afternoon and evening hours, the threat becomes most likely over Middle and East Tennessee, including the Cookeville area.
The Severe Storms Forecast Center has put the entire mid state in a moderate risk for severe storms.
This is the strongest storm system to affect Middle Tennessee so far this spring. The potential for severe weather looks increasingly likely including tornadic supercells.
You should decide now where the safest place is for you and your family should severe weather approach.
TORNADO SAFETY RULES
1. In home or small building, go to the basement or to an interior room, such as a closet or bathroom, on the lowest level. Get under something sturdy, such as a heavy table or a bed.
2. In mobile homes or vehicles, abandon them immediately and go to a sturdy structure. If there is no such structure nearby, lie flat in a ditch, ravine, gully, culvert, or low spot with your arms and hands shielding your head.
3. In large buildings, go to the predesignated area. Usually interior hallways, on the lowest floor are best. Avoid large rooms
4. In a high-rise building, go to an interior hallway or small room.
5. Stay away from windows, don't bother opening or closing them as it will make no difference. You're wasting your time and putting yourself a great risk from flying glass and debris.

Severe Weather Chances Saturday

2 Great Comments

(Graphic courtesy of NashvilleWx.com)

SIGNIFICANT WEATHER CHANGES AHEAD: Most cloudy today with a 20% chance for showers and a high of 72°. We are looking at our first potential for severe weather on Saturday as a very strong upper-level storm will move in from the southern plains. With large amounts of wind energy and wind shear in the lower levels of the atmosphere, we will have a ripe combination for large hail, damaging winds, and isolated tornadoes. This would be a great time to go out and purchase a NOAA Weather Radio, if you do not have one (see link and image below).

...POTENTIAL EXISTS FOR SEVERE STORMS IN MIDDLE TENNESSEE ON SATURDAY...

A STRONG UPPER LEVEL STORM SYSTEM WILL MOVE OUT OF THE SOUTHERN PLAINS
ON FRIDAY AND BRING A CHANCE FOR SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS TO THE MID
STATE AS EARLY AS FRIDAY NIGHT. BY EARLY SATURDAY...SOME STORMS COULD
BECOME SEVERE...AHEAD OF AN APPROACHING UPPER LEVEL DISTURBANCE...WITH
THE THREAT FOR SEVERE WEATHER CONTINUING THROUGHOUT THE DAY ON SATURDAY.
ANY SEVERE STORMS THAT DEVELOP WILL HAVE THE CAPABILITY TO PRODUCE LARGE
HAIL...DAMAGING WINDS. THERE IS ALSO THE POTENTIAL FOR ISOLATED TORNADOES
SINCE THERE WILL BE LARGE AMOUNTS OF WIND ENERGY AND WIND SHEAR IN THE
LOWER LEVELS OF THE ATMOSPHERE.

NOW IS THE TIME TO THINK ABOUT WHERE YOU AND YOUR FAMILY WILL GO
SHOULD SEVERE WEATHER APPROACH YOUR AREA.

TORNADO SAFETY RULES

1. IN HOMES OR SMALL BUILDINGS, GO TO THE BASEMENT OR TO AN
INTERIOR ROOM, SUCH AS A CLOSET OR BATHROOM, ON THE LOWEST
LEVEL. GET UNDER SOMETHING STURDY SUCH AS A HEAVY TABLE OR A
BED.

2. IN MOBILE HOMES AND VEHICLES, ABANDON THEM AND GO TO A
STURDY STRUCTURE. IF THERE IS NO SUCH STRUCTURE NEARBY, LIE

YOUR ARMS AND HANDS SHIELDING YOUR HEAD.

3. IN LARGE BUILDINGS, SUCH AS SCHOOLS, FACTORIES, HOSPITALS,
NURSING HOMES AND SHOPPING CENTERS, GO TO THE PREDESIGNATED
SHELTER AREA. INTERIOR HALLWAYS ON THE LOWEST FLOOR ARE
USUALLY BEST. STAY AWAY FROM ROOMS THAT ARE LARGE IN AREA
BECAUSE THEY HAVE WEAKLY SUPPORTED ROOFS.

4. IN HIGH-RISE BUILDINGS, GO TO AN INTERIOR SMALL ROOM OR
HALLWAY.

5. STAY AWAY FROM WINDOWS. DON'T BOTHER OPENING OR CLOSING
THEM. IT WON'T MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE TO THE STRUCTURE AND
YOU'LL JUST WASTE TIME OR PUT YOURSELF AT RISK SHOULD
GLASS BREAK AS YOU ARE NEAR.

Sunny Wednesday With Changes Looming

0 Great Comments
STORMS POSSIBLE THIS WEEKEND: Sun-filled skies today with highs around 69°. We enter a rainy pattern over the next 4-5 days with the possibility of strong to severe storms on Saturday and Saturday night.
At this point in time, it is difficult to forecast the exact timing and the severity of these possible storms for the weekend. I'll continue to watch the developing weather situation and update as the need arises.

DRY APRIL INDEED: With just under a 1/2" of rain thus far in April, a big rain event is needed to help alleviate our very dry conditions. We've seen feast or famine in the rain department as months have been much above average or much below average over the past 9 months.

Rain Chances Today

0 Great Comments
TUESDAY RAIN GIVES WAY TO SUN ON WEDNESDAY: We've moved into more of an unstable pattern and will see rain chances off and on through the next five days. The rain is much-needed across the Upper Cumberland as most of us have seen less than 1/2 inch during April. There are possibilities of strong to severe storms this weekend, but we're not quite convinced at this time.

PRAYERS FOR DR. JIM BOLTON: I ask the friends and fans of this web site to set aside some time and pray for the health of our great friend, Dr. Jim Bolton. He is in the Neurological Critical Care Unit at Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville. We are believing for the bleeding on his brain to cease and for his return to great health. Please join us in continued prayer.

Cool and Sunny Sunday

0 Great Comments
COOLER THAN NORMAL: After several days of much warmer than normal temps, we're looking at a cooler than normal day on Sunday with highs around 65° under a bright, sun-filled sky! We dropped to 35° earlier this morning and expect to be back in the 30's once again by Monday morning. I do, however, see a nice warming trend for the upcoming workweek with very little chances of rain.

SUNDAY CHURCH: How about joining us at Trinity Assembly in Algood today for our 10:30 am (CDT) service. If you're local and don't have a church home, you can find us at 201 West Wall Street. If you're out of this area, we can be found LIVE on the web.

Changes For The Weekend

(Iceland's Volcanic Eruption)

COOLER WEEK AHEAD: A cold front has made it's way through Middle Tennessee and it brought a little rain (just .03 in our rain gauge) and northerly to northwesterly winds along with cooler temperatures. While we'll see 68° for our projected high, tonight's lows are expected to be in the upper 30's. Unfortunately, we didn't get enough rain to wash away all of this pollen. The week ahead is expected to be dry once again (we've seen less than a 1/2" of rain during April) with a slight warming trend. Next chance for rain appears to be around Thursday. Typically, during April we see 4.60".

ICELAND'S VOLCANO: Is it possible the volcanic eruption in Iceland could, eventually, affect weather right her in the Upper Cumberland? The answer is a complicated 'yes'. I wrote a short article on CookevilleTimes.com concerning this. Volcanic eruptions have disrupted normal weather patterns in the past. Typically, a large volcanic eruption can spread enough ash over an area to cause a haze which can block the sun's rays causing a cooling effect. More to come on this interesting situation as the volcano continues to spew ash into the air.

Nice Friday with Weekend Changes Coming

0 Great Comments

(April 16, 1998 Tornado Damage at Hermitage in Nashville)

FRIDAY SUNSHINE: Expect highs around 80° today in the Cookeville area. Rain enters our picture overnight with the possibility of thunderstorms. Severe weather is unlikely as is heavy rain. We'll see highs 'only' in the 60's through the middle of next week. Quite a change from the recent 80's

APRIL'S WARM START: Amazing warm start to April. We've seen highs hit 87° on April 5th and lows drop to 34.5° on April 10th. Our average temperatures (mean temperature...which equals the average of the high and low) are running almost 10° above normal. No complaints out of most of us after a winter which saw temperatures run much below normal.

TIRED OF SUN YET?: Look for more sunshine over the Cumberland Plateau region through Friday as highs both today and tomorrow will be in the lower and middle 80's. Expect 83° here in Cookeville. Haven't heard anyone complain about the sunshine yet, but we do need some rainfall. Expect to see rain Friday night and Saturday with cooler weekend temperatures.

Near Record Highs and Windy

0 Great Comments
PLENTY OF SUNSHINE: Record warmth is possible once again today in Cookeville along with much of Middle Tennessee. Several cities set records and we'll cover those later in this story. We will remain under a Fire Weather Watch for this afternoon. Highs are expected to be around 85° and the record for April 6th is 85° from 1988. My prediction is we'll break that later today.

REST OF WEEK OUTLOOK: I am concerned over the potential for severe weather to occur late Wednesday night into early Thursday morning. We will watch this developing situation and let you know as information becomes available. Additionally, behind the strong to severe weather will be a HUGE change in temperatures. Highs on Friday will likely struggle to make the 60's and lows on Friday night will drop to the mid 30's with frost potential. For those of you who've planted some early crops in your gardens, you may have to cover them Friday night and Saturday morning. More on that in the days to come.

Just a light rain event yesterday with .04" in the rain bucket. No rain expected today, Easter Sunday, and only a slight chance tonight and Monday. Lincoln County is particularly hard-hit, as an F4 kills 22, and injures another 250. This is the 5th deadliest tornado ever to strike Middle Tennessee. Three-inch hail is reported in Marshall County. This is the largest tornado outbreak in mid state history. Locally, here in Cookeville, 11 are killed as a twister strikes just east of town. Witnesses in other parts of the county report additional tornadoes, too.

Rain Today; Moving Out Late This Afternoon

0 Great Comments
SATURDAY RAIN: Latest RADAR look at 8:20 this morning reveals rain moving into the Cookeville area very soon. Rain has fallen across many sections of Middle Tennessee today. We are not expecting any thunderstorm activity with this system. About .25" to 50" (or a quarter-inch to a half-inch) is expected. Later today, the rain moves out and we might see a peek or two of sunshine. Again, that will be late this afternoon. Overnight tonight, clouds move out and a low of 48°. Easter Sunday will be mostly sunny with a high of 77°.

ANOTHER VERY NICE DAY: Expect temperatures to reach 80° for the second day in a row across Cookeville and the Upper Cumberlands of Tennessee. Yesterday's high was 85°, just 1° off the record of 86° set in 1963. Today's record is 87° from 1946. I expect we'll see 83° for our afternoon high. Rain and thunderstorm chances move in for Saturday. Don't believe it will be an all-day washout, but it will interfere with outdoor plans during a 6 hour window. Sunday, however, is going to be nice with warm temperatures and sunshine.
