Incredible Heat Ahead

We're poised to be back in the 90's today across the Upper Cumberland region after a one day reprieve. Yesterday's high was just 84° breaking an 8-day streak of 90°+ highs. This morning's low was a very comfy 54.9° at 5:42 am.

WEDNESDAY'S HIGHS:

With highs returning to around 90° today it will be the most comfortable day as extreme heat will build across the area beginning on Thursday. I expect our highs to be just under 100° on Thursday, but TOP 100° on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Monday and Tuesday should be shade under the 100° mark.

Notice A Difference

FAST FACTS ABOUT OUR JUNE WEATHER:
In the last five days we've had a huge difference in our weather. Allow me to show you.

• From June 1st through June 11th, our average daytime high temperature was 91.8°...contrast this to the last 5 days where we have averaged 82.4°. 

• While the past 5 days have felt 'cool', our historical average high is 84° this time of year, so that is just below normal. 

• Our average so far for June 2011 in the daytime high temps is a balmy 88.9°, the record through 16 days is from 1925 where we averaged 90.7°. 

• The 2+ inches of rainfall recorded yesterday set a new daily record for that date. 

FROM THE 'DID YOU KNOW' DEPARTMENT:

• In 1998, we had recorded more than 13" so far through the first 16 days of June?
• June 1988 saw our low temperatures average a chilly 50.9° through the first half of the month
• June 1936 was our driest ever with .09" for the entire month
• Only 6% of all tornadoes in Middle TN occur in June
• Nashville hit 100° for 10 straight days in June 1952
• Through today we've had 37.12" of precip for 2011, historical average is 27.00!

For any of you who (and count me among those) have missed the warm temperatures with sunshine and are ready to be done with our Seattle-type weather, I have FANTASTIC NEWS!!!

WARMING UP
Prepare yourselves for the following: We will see highs on Thursday reach the middle 70's under a mainly cloudy sky with sunshine returning on Friday, high 83°. By Saturday morning we will START at 60° and rise to 87° by the afternoon with only a slight shot at a thunderstorm. Sunday will be hot again, high of 87° and a stray thunderstorm is possible.

INTERESTING TENNESSEE WEATHER HISTORY:
May 18, 1995:
Severe weather outbreak strikes Middle Tennessee. There are 15 confirmed tornadoes across the mid state, including an F4 which tears a 29 mile path across Lawrence and Giles Counties, killing 3, and injuring 32. A swath of hail damage extends from near Linden to Shelbyville. Hail as large as 3" is reported. Damage to homes and vehicles is extensive. A hailstorm in De Kalb County produces an estimated $1.5 million in damage. This is the 5th largest tornado outbreak in mid state history.

Another wonderful day across Middle Tennessee for your Sunday as we expect highs locally in the Cookeville area to be around 72°. There is an ever so slight chance of a shower or thunderstorm this afternoon. They will be the exception rather than the rule.

We had an 8-day run of 70°+ during the early part of October.

Chilly, Rainy Tuesday

COOL WITH RAIN TODAY:
Once again we'll only be in the upper 50's today with a 70% of chance of rain showers. Could see a thunderstorm or two, but I think that is a very slim chance. Clouds decrease tonight and it'll be quite chilly with the lows dropping to around 37° by sunrise on Wednesday. The great news is we begin to warm-up tomorrow with sunshine and 66°. Even warmer on Thursday with sunshine and 76°. Watching possible strong storm chances by Saturday.

Weather History for This Date (April 27th)

1970 - An F4 tornado strikes Middle TN near Clarksville, Springfield, and Bethpage. It is on the ground for 42 miles. Damage is estimated at 1.5 million dollars. The path is nearly 400 yards wide. 3 people are killed and 85 injured.

1986 - Crossville hits 86 degrees, their warmest high ever for April.

Severe Weather Chances Saturday

SIGNIFICANT WEATHER CHANGES AHEAD: Most cloudy today with a 20% chance for showers and a high of 72°. We are looking at our first potential for severe weather on Saturday as a very strong upper-level storm will move in from the southern plains. With large amounts of wind energy and wind shear in the lower levels of the atmosphere, we will have a ripe combination for large hail, damaging winds, and isolated tornadoes. This would be a great time to go out and purchase a NOAA Weather Radio, if you do not have one (see link and image below).

Rain Winds Down and Cooler

BIG CHANGES FROM PAST WEEK: Rain with falling temperatures this morning. Most of the heaviest rain has moved east of the Cookeville area. Temperatures have fallen since midnight and continue to go down. We'll fall through the 50's this afternoon to an overnight low in the 30's! Highs near 60 on Friday, but then right back in 30's for Friday night/Saturday morning. The weekend looks nice with daytime highs in the 70's!

Warm Wednesday with BIG Changes Coming

VERY NICE TODAY: Temperatures expected to climb into upper 70's for highs across Cookeville and the Upper Cumberland area of Tennessee. Winds could gust to 35 mph this afternoon. Clouds become more numerous late in the day and we expect a line of storms to develop overnight. There is a risk of strong storms overnight and into Thursday morning. Temperatures will become markedly cooler behind the front and Saturday morning's low could be near freezing. Be sure to cover any flowers or new plantings as frost will develop. The weekend looks nice with highs in the upper 60's to around 70.

2006 - Deadliest tornado outbreak since Super Outbreak of '74. 7 are killed in Gallatin with another 128 injured. Two tornadoes in Warren County kill 3 people. Also 3 and 1/4" hail occurs in Macon County.
2007 - Crossville's low is 20° a new record for April and occurs just 13 days after a record-high for March. We drop to 21° here in Cookeville, a new record for April.

Near Record Highs and Windy

PLENTY OF SUNSHINE: Record warmth is possible once again today in Cookeville along with much of Middle Tennessee. Several cities set records and we'll cover those later in this story. We will remain under a Fire Weather Watch for this afternoon. Highs are expected to be around 85° and the record for April 6th is 85° from 1988. My prediction is we'll break that later today.

REST OF WEEK OUTLOOK: I am concerned over the potential for severe weather to occur late Wednesday night into early Thursday morning. We will watch this developing situation and let you know as information becomes available. Additionally, behind the strong to severe weather will be a HUGE change in temperatures. Highs on Friday will likely struggle to make the 60's and lows on Friday night will drop to the mid 30's with frost potential. For those of you who've planted some early crops in your gardens, you may have to cover them Friday night and Saturday morning. More on that in the days to come.

Fantastic Good Friday

ANOTHER VERY NICE DAY: Expect temperatures to reach 80° for the second day in a row across Cookeville and the Upper Cumberlands of Tennessee. Yesterday's high was 85°, just 1° off the record of 86° set in 1963. Today's record is 87° from 1946. I expect we'll see 83° for our afternoon high. Rain and thunderstorm chances move in for Saturday. Don't believe it will be an all-day washout, but it will interfere with outdoor plans during a 6 hour window. Sunday, however, is going to be nice with warm temperatures and sunshine.

Chilly start this morning as temperatures are around 33° at just before 7 a.m. in Cookeville and across the Upper Cumberland region of Tennessee. The cool nights and warm days with abundant sunshine will continue through Saturday. Expect highs to warm each day, 75° on Wednesday, 78° on Thursday, and 81° on Friday. Cool Today, But Nice Changes Are Coming

CLOUDY MONDAY:  After a total .of .80" of rain in Cookeville on Sunday, we'll see a dry Monday with highs of only about 51° under a cloudy sky. Clearing takes place overnight with lows around 39° and then the fun begins. Sunshine each day Tuesday through Saturday with highs from 62° on Tuesday up to 77° on Saturday. It'll be the best week, weather-wise, of 2010.

***2:00 PM UPDATE***
Pesky clouds continue to hang on, but clearing skies are being reported just to our west. Expect sunshine for late in the day. NWS revised temps down to 49° for the high. Currently, just 41° at 10 minutes before 2 pm. 


CLOUDS GIVE WAY TO SUN: Chilly temperatures this morning at 7:20 am (38.6°) in Cookeville. We do expect to see sunshine later and a high of 52° late this afternoon. Chilly overnight with lows in the middle 30's. Sunshine for Saturday with highs expected in the middle 60's. VERY NICE!!

Storms Possible Late Today and Tonight

RAIN ON IT'S WAY: After a high of 72° (warmest day since Oct. 30th) on Wednesday, we'll see temperatures pull back a bit today with highs around 63°. Rain makes it way into our area by afternoon (we've already seen some, .06", this morning) and I can't rule out a strong storm or two. The best chances will be back toward the southern and western sections of Middle Tennessee. Thunderstorms will last into Thursday night as a strong cold front approaches from the west. Expect a chilly Friday with highs only around 50°, it'll feel colder as the day will be mostly cloudy. We get a much nicer day on Saturday with highs in the 60's, but storms return for Sunday.

Warming Up With Sunshine By Thursday

POST #1700: More about that later, let's look at the forecast first. Another cloudy, cool day on tap with highs expected to be a few more degrees warmer today than on Monday, look for a high of 52°. Cold tonight with a low of 41°. Slight chances of a shower or two for St. Patty's Day with a high of 55°. Then, we start to see sunshine with a decent warm-up on Thursday and Friday as we'll see highs of 62° and 66° respectively. Weekend highs in the 60's with chances of rain showers and possible thunderstorms. This is post #1700 for the Weather Guy blog. Hard to believe where this started and where it is today. Strong to Severe Weather Possible Tonight-Wednesday

STORMS POSSIBLE: Rain chances go up substanially tonight. There is a slight chance of strong storms overnight into Thursday. The better chance will be back to our west from the Mississippi River to the Tennessee River. Just a 40% chance of rain today with a high near 65°. 80% chance tonight and a 100% chance of rain on Thursday. Lows in the mid 50's and highs in the mid 60's.

The latest Hazardous Weather Outlook shows the possible strong weather chances. Yesterday's high of 68° was the 2nd day in a row with temperatures of at least 68°. This marks this first that has happened since October! A run of more than 4 months.

EMA officials report 5½" of rain in 1½ hours in Lewisburg. Many roads are flooded, and 6 cars are damaged. Three feet of water cover some roads. A man has to be rescued from his vehicle on Belfast Avenue. Local Tennessee National Guard members assist in evacuating about 30 children from a daycare center, which is flooded with 2½' of water.
