Snow Chances Today - March 31, 2011

You read the headline right. It is not an early April Fool's Day joke.

We'll see a chance for rain mixing with snow this morning. I do not think it'll last long, but I do think higher elevations may see more snow than rain. We'll be on the edge as far as temperatures go. Highs will eventually reach the middle 40's this afternoon.

A warming trend is ahead and temperatures should hit the 60's by Saturday and near 70 by Sunday and in the middle 70's by first of next week. Remember, with warmer temps comes the chances for strong to severe spring weather.

Super Sunday Forecast

VERY NICE:
Another wonderful day across Middle Tennessee for your Sunday as we expect highs locally in the Cookeville area to be around 72°. There is an ever so slight chance of a shower or thunderstorm this afternoon. They will be the exception rather than the rule.

THIS WEEK:
Looking ahead over the next few days, I have great news.
Monday - 75 (sunshine)
Tuesday - 79 (sunshine)
Wednesday - 71 (chance of showers)

LAST WEEK IN REVIEW:
Thursday's high was a nice 76° while Friday's high was 80°. It was the first time we saw 80° since late in October. A span of almost 5 months. With a high of at least 70° today, it'll be the first time we've been this warm for that many consecutive days since November 9th to the 13th. We had an 8-day run of 70°+ during the early part of October.

Nobody's Complaining

You never hear a peep from folks when the National Weather Service's forecast misses the high temp by 7° like today. Originally, we had a forecasted high of 60°, but hit 67° at 3:49 pm. I guess if this had been a wintry forecast with a high below 32°, we'd have seen a lot of gripes about missing it by 7°!

**REMEMBER, SPRING FORWARD**

In case you didn't do it last night and wondered why you may have been late to church or getting together with friends at an appointed time, clocks move one hour ahead last night. Here is a great way to remember..."Spring Forward and Fall Back"....Spring forward is a great time because we get more sunlight in the evenings after work for 'fun things' such as yard work and the ol' honey-do list.

**RAIN IN MIDDLE TENNESSEE**

A look around Tennessee at this hour shows the warmer temperatures in the east and in the west parts of the state with the cooler readings around Nashville. Rain is mainly confined from a line just southwest of Clarksville extending eastward through Nashville and into Wilson and Smith Counties. We'll see mainly light amounts, if any, though the area.

**SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY**

A 40% chance of rain showers tonight with a low of 46°. Showers really ramp up Monday with a 90% chance and a high of 57°. A 90% chance of showers again on Monday night with a low of 49° and showers likely once again on Tuesday, high 60°. The rest of the week looks quite nice with 60's Wednesday, 70's on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday! We'll take it!

App Testing

Working with an app from Blogger on my HTC Incredible phone. Seems to work well.

Saturday's Warm Temps

Reviewed some temperature history and found the last time we were warmer than yesterday's high of 72 was back on November 25th when we hit 74.

Pray for the people of Japan as they deal with the aftershocks following their strongest quake in 500 years. In addition to the aftershocks, the devastation from the tsunami is almost unbelievable. Add the issues with a number of their nuclear facilities and you have a recipe for one of the greatest disasters in history.

Back to Reality (Chilly Sunday)

For nearly a month, we've been spoiled by a warm pattern of temperatures. In fact, the last time our high was only in the 30's occurred on February 10th. Today, 30's return for highs across the Cookeville, as cold air is firmly in place for the next 24 hours.

WARM-UP IMMINENT:
Thankfully, the cold air gives way to sunshine and warmer temperatures on Monday as we'll reach the middle 50's. The nicest day will likely be on Tuesday with a high of 62°. Thunderstorms reappear on Wednesday and we'll watch for possible severe storms as well.

DID YOU SEE IT????

  • Some snow flurries were reported across the Highlands of Tennessee, especially on the Cumberland Plateau around Jamestown and Crossville. Snow in March is rare, but does happen from time to time.
RAINFALL MEASUREMENT:
  • On Saturday, we recorded 1.99" of rainfall ending at midnight. For the two-day period, including today, our total was 2.24". For the year, we stand at 12.06". Since February 24th, we have recorded 7.64" (that is just a ten-day period!)...
JOIN ME AT TRINITY ASSEMBLY:
  • My family are members at Trinity Assembly in Algood, TN and if you don't have a church home, not sure what you think about church, or are looking for something new, join us at Trinity either in-person or via the internet at: http://www.trinityalgood.com ...our church services are LIVE on Sundays at both 8:30 am and 10:30 am central time.

Heavy Rains Late Friday Into Saturday

Looks like more rain is on our way. Right now the estimates are from 1" to 3". Throw that in on top of the nearly 5.5" we received in the last 5 days of February and we have a big recipe for flooding.

I recommend that you stay weather aware between late Friday, overnight Saturday, and most of the daytime hours on Saturday. I'll have much more in a morning update.

Welcome to March

March is coming in like a lamb today as conditions will be much quieter than yesterday's strong storm outbreak. The work week ahead promises to be quiet as well. Next rain is this weekend.

WEATHER CLAIMS TWO LIVES:
Here in Tennessee, one man was killed in a tornado to our south in Franklin County and another man was killed on Interstate 24 near Murfreesboro when he lost control of his box truck slamming into a tractor-trailer. The rain, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, was a factor in that accident.

YESTERDAY'S RAINS:
Today, we'll see highs in the upper 50's in the Cookeville area and vicinity. We have another big shot at heavy rains coming up this weekend, but we'll get to that later. Speaking of rains, we recorded 2.16" yesterday. That gave us 6.44 inches for the month of February, which is 37% above the normal of 4.70" for this month. For the year of 2011, we are standing at 9.82" while the normal for the first two months is 9.81"!

*Latest Local Forecast*

POTENTIAL RAINS THIS WEEKEND:
Looking at the extended forecast, we have another big shot at rains coming up this weekend. See the rainfall potential image below.

MARCH OUTLOOK:
March appears that it will be normal in both temperature and precipitation. A graphic from the Climate Prediction Center below. The 'B' and the corresponding blue color represents below normal temps while the 'A' and corresponding orange color represents above average temps for March. Note that Tennessee is shown as 'EC', which is Equal Chances and that equates to average temps.
