Patchy Overnight Fog, Fantastic Turkey Day

Look for fog to develop across the middle TN area. As I drove back from the Nashville International Airport around 10:30 pm, fog was already developing along the Caney Fork River in Smith County. Most of the fog will be limited to the areas around water but we could see fog develop in other low-lying places as well. A low by sunrise in the upper 30's.

For Thanksgiving, expect an outstanding day. We'll start off chilly but will warm quickly as the fog will burn off just after sunrise. Afternoon highs under sunny skies will be in the upper 60's with a light southwest wind. Expect partly cloudy skies Thanksgiving night with warmer temperatures for all the bargain hunters as they get an early start on Black Friday. The low by sunrise on Friday will be around 47°.

Friday's high is expected to only make the upper 50's with a 30% rain chance. Winds will turn to the NW in the afternoon hours leading to a big drop. We'll be in the mid 20's by Saturday morning with highs on Saturday afternoon struggling to reach the low 40's. VERY COLD on Saturday night with lows by Sunday morning in the lower and mid 20's.

Sunny and 54° on Sunday!

Enjoy your Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

Thanksgiving Eve Forecast

We'll drop back down into the 40's once again. It'll be the second night in a row that we are not below freezing. We went 8 straight days at 32° or less before last night's low of just 42°.

For Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving, expect a sunny, warm day with a high of 65° (Tuesday's high was 66.5°). Repeat that warmth and sunshine for Thanksgiving with highs around 68° (some of us could hit 70° on turkey day).

Showers chances for Friday with falling afternoon temperatures and sunshine for Saturday and only about 44° for the high.

Sunny Saturday

At 1:22 pm on this gorgeous Saturday afternoon, we're sitting at 59.6°. This is the warmest daytime high since last Sunday when we hit 68.9°. There is abundant sunshine and a light north northwest wind at around 3 mph with gusts to 10 mph.

Expect highs to reach around 60° later this afternoon before retreating. Tonight's low 31° with frost likely and Sunday's high will be 62° with plenty of sunshine once again. I think we'll 65° on Monday with a little more cloud cover.

The Saint Patrick's Day snowstorm in Nashville - 17 inches on March 17, 1892 is still the most ever received in Nashville. 21.5 inches of snow during March 1892 still stands as the record month.

Cold Night Once Again

It's going to cold again Thursday night with morning lows on Friday in the upper 20's. We're already down to 39° early this evening (7:25 pm). Skies will remain mostly clear. Friday's forecast is for mostly sunny skies and a warmer high of 57° (we hit just 54.9°) on Thursday.

The lows this week have been:
Monday 29.8°
Tuesday 25.8°
Wednesday 29.4°
Thursday 26.5°

The highs this week have been:
Monday 64.4° (at 12:38 am)
Tuesday 47.1°
Wednesday 50.6°
Thursday 54.9°

I do expect we'll finally hit 60° by this weekend and we'll rise a few degrees into the 30's for overnight lows. Our next rain chances arrive on Tuesday with a very slight chance of a shower but then we'll clear up all the way through Thanksgiving with very seasonal highs and lows (60's and 40's).

We've talked a couple of times this week about the fact that it's Winter Weather Awareness Week across Tennessee. If you want more information, check out this special National Weather Service webpage.

Falling Temperatures and Rainy Conditions

At 9:30 am, the temperature is 59.3° with a south wind in Cookeville, TN (41° in Hopkinsville, KY and 43° in Clarksville). This is all about to change as a cold front is at our doorstep. Behind the front, the winds will shift to the north northwest and temperatures will fall rather quickly. Conditions will feel quite chilly as we go toward the late afternoon hours. I expect a heavy rainshower or two before lunch.

Winter Weather Awareness Week

Tennessee's winter weather awareness week begins Monday, November 12 and runs through Friday, November 16, 2012.

(Monterey, TN snowfall in 2011-courtesy: Kent Bilbrey)

As many of you know Tennessee does experience some significant winter weather. Snow, sleet, freezing rain, ice, and severe thunderstorms including tornadoes may occur during the winter months. Ice storms, although infrequent, can cause all sorts of damage to the electrical grid in the form of downed power lines. Have a plan if your power should go out. The Disaster Center page has some tips.

This is a great time to check your winter preparedness plans.

Put the following items on your to-do list.

1. Make sure your N.O.A.A. Weather Radio has fresh batteries
2. Make sure you have a means of receiving winter weather information and be prepared in case you have no way to travel.
3. If you must travel in winter weather, be sure to have a winter weather preparedness kit in your car. Some great kit items should be the following:
-------
Mobile phone with charger
blankets
sleeping bags
first aid kit
knife
non-perishable foods
extra clothing
waterproof matches
sand or kitty litter for traction
shovel
windshield scraper and brush
tool kit
tow rope
jumper cables
water container
road maps - including a GPS device
----
The most significant winter storm in recent memory was the 'Storm of the Century' back in March 1993. In middle TN, Cookeville records 11" while Crossville receives a record amount of 18", as did Allardt with 14.1". The most snowfall in a 24-hour period in Cookeville was November 2, 1966 with 15.2"

Earth Tremor In Cookeville

Did you feel it?

There are reports of a small earth tremor in Cookeville today. So far we've gotten reports from Bangham area north of Cookeville, the Avery Trace area just east of the Courthouse and also in northeast Cookeville near Hwy 111 and 10th Street.

I've checked the earthquake map at:
http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/map/

Nothing so far.

A 4.3 magnitude quake has been recorded some 13 kilometers (8.07 miles) west of Whitesburg, Kentucky (near KY/VA border) at 11:08 am this Saturday morning.

Reports of the ground shaking are coming in from all over Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia and even as far away as Charleston, West Virginia.

Report what you felt to the USGS at:

Slight Rain Chances Election Day

I'm still in Illinois working for the candidate in the 12th Congressional District, Jason Plummer. It has been a fun time and Mr. Plummer is not only a great guy, but an excellent candidate who'll make a wonderful Congressman. The weather up here has been quite chilly and we worked in rain all day canvassing neighborhoods.

Cookeville's weather for election day is for a 20% chance of showers. Don't let the showers deter you from your duty of voting. Highs should be in the lower 50's under cloudy skies.

The rest of the week calls for a better shower chance Tuesday night and a slight chance on Wednesday with highs only near 50. Sunny skies return for Thursday and Friday with warmer temperatures.

A sunny weekend is ahead.

Chilly Friday Night But A Warmer Saturday

It was a gorgeous day across the Cookeville area as temps rose into the 60's. We expect Saturday to be quite nice with highs in the upper 60's after morning lows in the 30's.

There is a slight chance for a shower on Saturday with a 50/50 chance on Saturday night.

Partly sunny and a little cooler on Sunday (about 10 degrees) with the same for Monday, but slightly cooler than on Sunday with highs only making it into the middle 50's.

I'll be in Illinois working through election day and will return on Wednesday. Go Team Romney!
