Gorgeous Sunday; But Near Zero Temps Returning

We're waking to temps in the upper 30's this morning at 9:00 am after an early morning low of 18°. Expect a mostly sunny sky with a high of 52° along with gusty south southwesterly winds from 15-25 mph. After that it is all downhill through at least Wednesday.

**CAUTION: SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT**

RAIN TO SNOW OVERNIGHT:
Tonight, a round of rain and snow develops as winds will turn to the northwest. We'll be right on the line for rain/snow so it is possible we'll awaken to no snow on Monday morning, but temperatures will be falling all day on Monday. We'll be down around 22° by 5 pm. As far as snow goes, it should all wrap up on Monday morning. Expect a blustery day, so dress appropriately.

BELOW ZERO WIND CHILL VALUES MONDAY NIGHT:
Monday night with be another brutally cold night with strong winds and extremely cold temperatures. Lows will bottom around 5° with a 15-25 mph wind causing wind chill readings as low as -10°.

UPPER TEENS TUESDAY WITH SINGLE DIGIT LOWS:
Tuesday will be very cold with partly sunny skies. We'll struggle to get out of the teens with a low a low on Tuesday night of 4°. Wednesday temperatures moderate a bit to 28° but we'll be back into the teens on Wednesday night. Even warmer on Thursday with highs in the lower 40's.

Fantastic Friday

Expect a sun-filled Friday with warm temperatures. The high should be right around 70°.

Unfortunately most of the weekend is promising rainfall.

Another Warm Day

After hitting 50° on Monday, we'll go up to 54° today under a sunny sky. We'll be even warmer the next few days but will have a chance of showers and possible a thunderstorm as we near the weekend. Highs will warm to near 60° on Wednesday, 64° on Thursday, 67° on Friday, and 68° on Saturday.

It seems that anytime we get really warm in the middle of winter, a major cold snap is just around the corner. Looking on into the month of January, there are good chances temperatures will tumble down once again. The timeframe is looking like the third week of January.

My advice is to enjoy these upcoming warm days because they'll end quickly!

Sunny Saturday

At 1:22 pm on this gorgeous Saturday afternoon, we're sitting at 59.6°. This is the warmest daytime high since last Sunday when we hit 68.9°. There is abundant sunshine and a light north northwest wind at around 3 mph with gusts to 10 mph.

Expect highs to reach around 60° later this afternoon before retreating. Tonight's low 31° with frost likely and Sunday's high will be 62° with plenty of sunshine once again. I think we'll 65° on Monday with a little more cloud cover.

The Saint Patrick's Day snowstorm in Nashville - 17 inches on March 17, 1892 is still the most ever received in Nashville. 21.5 inches of snow during March 1892 still stands as the record month.

Chilly Overnight, Gorgeous Tuesday

Freezing temperatures overnight return, but just for one night. Tuesday will be quite nice with sun-filled skies and a high of 60°....chilly on Tuesday night, low 38° and then we'll zoom right back up to 60° once again for Wednesday.

WARMER, THEN RAIN:

Fantastic Weekend Ahead

We begin Friday with very chilly temperatures. The day, however, will warm quickly and we expect to be around 65° by this afternoon under sunny skies. Saturday's high will be in the mid and upper 60's and we may even hit 70° on Sunday. No rain is expected this weekend. The next chances of rain will occur Monday or Monday night.

I have a great opportunity this weekend to go see the Nashville office of the National Weather Service. At first, my 15 year-old wasn't thrilled about going. The more we discussed it, the more excited she is about going to tour the facility. It is located in Wilson County near Old Hickory Lake.

'Sun'day Afternoon Update

The sun is shining brightly here in Cookeville this afternoon! Most of the snow is or has melted. I put the following phrase on my Facebook site. "Michael is advising all students and faculty to be prepared to go to school on Monday." Earlier this morning, while it was still cloudy, I thought they might have a chance to get an extra day off.  Does not appear to be the case now. As you can tell from the picture, courtesy of the Cookeville EMA Webcam, above...the snow is gone!

We measured 1.5" locally in Cookeville.  The are nearly 100 reports from CoCoRaHS observers across TN with at least 1.0" of new snow from overnight. Snow totals of 5" was reported in Mississippi, 5" from Alabama, and over in West Tennessee, they were several reports of a foot or more of snow on the ground today. Auburn, AL had a tornado yesterday and had a nice snow event today..2.5 inches of accumulation there.  Pictures of Auburn are here.

One of my blog readers from southern Middle Tennessee challenged me that he would get more than my area.  Hey Adam, you're right!!  You sure did! 7 or 8 inches at his place beats the 1.5" I got at my place.

Another friend from Memphis recorded 5.8" at his house...Erik runs MemphisWeather...I enjoy his knowledge and his website

Yet another friend, Eddie from Jackson, TN runs the Jackson Weather site.  He recorded the highest one-day snow total EVER for Jackson, TN! 12.5" His list of snowfall amounts can be found here!

Enjoy this wonderful day! I'm watching my 16 month-old daughter snooze...life is good.

Back Amongst The Living (Nice Weekend Forecast)

FAMILY HEALTH UPDATE
My family and I are beginning to be back amongst the living.  After fighting a terrible stomach virus, things are starting to get back to normal.  Our baby is eating more normal type food while my wife and I are selective as to what we are having.  Our eldest daughter is still fighting the effects of the virus, but hers hasn't been as severe as the three of us.

GETTING BACK TO WEATHER
Let's look at this weekend's weather in Cookeville, TN.  The sun is trying to make an appearance this afternoon (Friday).  We do anticipate a few snow flurries tonight as a 'pool of moisture' (according to the NWS Forecast Discussion) swings through our area.  Dry weather is expected for the rest of our weekend along with warmer temperatures.  High of 46 on Saturday and 55 on Sunday. Count on sunshine for both days.

*Latest, Local Forecast*

MAJOR WINTER STORM AHEAD?
We are watching the potential development of a major winter storm for Monday and Tuesday.  The biggest question at this point is this: 'Who gets snow and who gets a big, fat disappointment?'  Confidence is high enough, right now, for us to see snow here in Cookeville.  I'm not confident enough to tell you how much accumulation we are talking about.

NWS-NASHVILLE GRAPHIC-CAST
This graphic-cast shows the track of the low pressure system through Alabama and into middle Georgia. This is a perfect scenario for an accumulating snow for Middle Tennessee.  Higher confidence in our accumulation amounts will be available LATER this weekend.
I'll have more later on this impending winter storm.

Warm, Windy Friday

****1:00 PM UPDATE****
So much for the warm sunshine.  Clouds have moved in and with the strong breeze (gusting to 20 mph), it feels much cooler than earlier this morning.  The barometer is on it's way down, which means changeable weather is coming.

ON THIS DATE:
In 1963, Nashville records it's greatest one-day drop in temperature.  After a high of 48°, the temperature drops to -13° by midnight representing a 61° drop...(courtesy-Nashville NWS Office )

It is a beautiful morning in Middle Tennessee.  Check out this sunrise over Cookeville!  Awesome.

Today's weather is going to be similar to an early spring day. Windy conditions with bright sunshine and a high temperature of near 60°. (Normal highs and lows this time of year are 46° and 25°)   Our weekend cools off once again, but enjoy today.

Go out and enjoy this beautiful day.  It will be our warmest day since January 10th.  Tomorrow will be our warmest day since January 4th when we hit 67°.  January 23rd's record high here in Cookeville is 58°, so we may have a shot at tying or breaking that record!

The Big Change Is On

Woke up to a BEAUTIFUL morning! Temperatures are in the lower to middle 50's across Middle Tennessee under bright sunshine-filled skies. The expectation, however, is for the clouds to move back in later this afternoon.

*Our latest, local forecast* includes the possibility of (dare I say) the S word...that's right...SNOW!! Oh my....snow in the middle of April....don't laugh, it happened last year on April 15th...

The great news is after this little cool spell moves out, we'll be back up near 70 by the middle of next week. WELCOME to Tennessee weather!

The crews from the NWS-Nashville will be out assessing damage from Friday's storms. I have a preliminary damage report here.

I want to focus on the Graphical Forecast Page today from the NWS-Nashville. It is great information for those of us who are 'visual learners'...go and check it out. Also, Mark Rose at the Nat'l Weather Service runs a blog page for the NWS-Nashville...the link is here...very valuable information.
