Rain and Thunderstorms For Sunday

We've already seen .85" here in northeast Cookeville today including about a tenth of an inch in the very early morning hours around 1:20 am and the rest (.75") this morning between 11:00 am and 12:30 pm.

Expect off and on showers and thunderstorms the rest of the day the atmosphere is completely saturated. Dewpoints are running 72° which makes it feel quite muggy and tropical like. Conditions will continue like this through Monday.

Most outdoor plans will be threatened by the chance of rainfall that will be heavy at times.

As always, if THUNDER ROARS, GO INDOORS.

Watch out for localized flooding problems in the heaviest of storms.

Thunderstorms Through Friday

A good chance of thunderstorms throughout middle Tennessee today as we'll hit 90° again. Thunderstorms continue overnight and into Friday with a cooler weekend ahead.

At 7 am, rumbles of thunder are being heard across Cookeville as a thunderstorm has popped up just west of town. We expect this to be a recurring situation throughout the day. The biggest concern is that some storms may become severe with high winds, hail, and frequent (and dangerous) cloud to ground lightning.

Record Breaking Warmth Thursday

Some thunderstorms rolled through the Cookeville area on Wednesday with small-sized hail (pea or about 1/2 the size of a dime) that morning and more thunder/lightning and heavy rain during the late afternoon hours. These storms brought .55" of rain. Winds gusted to 23 mph and we saw a high of 54°. Thursday's weather will be quite interesting! More on this in the following paragraph. 

Expect record-breaking warmth on Thursday with an expected high of 75° (we could go a few degrees higher)...the record for February 23rd is 74° set back in 1980. The other big news for Thursday is the expectation of widespread strong thunderstorms across the entire mid-state area of Tennessee. Now is a good time to make sure your weather radio is in good working order or even make a purchase of a weather radio. For those of you who have 'smartphones', there are all sorts of 'apps' from either the Android or Apple store. Reports from trained storm spotters may be needed by the National Weather Service office in Nashville.

Thunderstorms Likely

Don't forget your umbrella today as we'll have a 60% chance for showers and thunderstorms today with a high of 86° with a slightly lower chance for the rest of the weekend. Saturday's high 87° and Sunday will be around 88°. Expect sunny skies for the first of next week and another heatwave will make it's presence felt.

Isolated Strong Thunderstorms Through Friday

We're stuck in a summer-like pattern that includes hot weather and popup afternoon thunderstorms. Many of us will see no rain since the storms will be of the isolated nature. Those who do see some rain may also have the possibility of seeing storms that will reach the strong to severe limits, including strong, gusty winds, small hail, and brief heavy rainfall.

Temperatures will rise quickly this morning through the 70's and be near 80° by 8:30 am or so. Expect an afternoon high again near 90°. Looking at the 7-day, our best chance for rainfall (60%) is on Friday while our coolest day (high of 84°) will be on Friday. Expect drier and hotter conditions over the weekend and into the first of next week.

Thunderstorms Then Colder

Windy conditions all across Middle TN today, February 1st, as gusts could reach to between 30 and 35 mph. A good chance of showers and thunderstorms with a high near 57° in Cookeville. I cannot rule out a stray strong to severe thunderstorm.

Tonight, after frontal passage, temperatures will fall quickly and we should see some snow on the backside of the cold front. At this time, little or no snow accumulation is expected.

Wednesday will be cold with highs only in the lower 30's and winds gusting as high as 30 mph from the northwest. Bundle up!

Storms Overnight

FLOODING RAINS OVER UPPER CUMBERLAND:
If you slept through the storms overnight, consider yourself one of the few. An incredible display of lightning, thunder, & very heavy rains. At times, tornado warning were issued for Macon and Jackson Counties. For a times, Putnam County was under a flash flood warning as storms dropped more than 2.5" of rain in about 40 minutes. ***LONG LIST OF STORM REPORTS*** ...Red Boiling Springs recorded more than 5" of rain overnight.

Expect a hot week with heat index readings to top 100°....

Big Storms Today...

Several areas across the great state of Tennessee have seen big thunderstorms today. Areas to my north in Clay and Macon Counties have seen up to 3" of rainfall. It seems that Middle and West Tennessee are seeing the big storms now.

Current Radar Look

We've measured .16" here at my home and heard quite a bit of thunder.

Big Rains

In the last 24 hours, we've measured 2.44" here in Cookeville, TN.

Yesterday afternoon, around 5 pm, we measured .67" during a nice thundershower. It was very nice and quiet during the firework show and then around 2 a.m., the skies opened up once again. This time we received 1.77" in the CoCoRaHS rain gauge. It will narrow our shortfall by quite a bit. Heading into July, we were 85% of normal for the year.

Looking at today's forecast, we could add to our totals with a 40% chance of thundershowers.

Just 2.59" short or 91.3% of normal

For July, we've measured 2.45" which is 1.82" ahead!

Storms FIRING here in the immediate Upper Cumberland area. The + sign you see on the radar image above is my location. I can hear the thunder from the storm just due north of me.

Storm Damage in Tennessee

Tonight, as I drove to pickup my teenager from my parent's houseboat, I came across down trees and limbs on Highway 96 just south of Interstate 40 off the 268 Exit. This damage was caused earlier in the day when a strong thunderstorm roared through our area. (will post photos later)

What do we expect for tomorrow? Much of the same....as a frontal boundary nears our area, we'll see thunderstorms increase as our area is saturated in moisture from the southwest winds. Our overnight temperatures will stay warm and muggy with elevated humidity and dew points. The atmosphere is very unstable. We expect several rounds of storms.

Most of the stronger storms tonight are back in Missouri and Kentucky.

Interesting Night Ahead...

...for some in Tennessee. As we watch the radar, we see some areas are getting heavy rain along with a few thunderstorms.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is out for West Tennessee through 2 a.m. It could be moved eastward as we go through the night. I don't think we'll see any rough weather here on the Plateau as dewpoints just don't support the development.

Lots Of Fireworks

Quite of bit of lightning and thunder late Wednesday afternoon. While I was finishing up at work, it rattled our windows! When I got home a bit later, the thunder rattled our windows at home...then at church last night, the same thing happened! Some areas received alot of rain, however, all I got in my handy-dandy COCORAHS rain gauge was .05...

oh well, maybe today...as the forecast shows we could get some rain....
