Snow During Early Monday Morning Hours

When Will The Snow Arrive: Rains will changeover to snow during the 2 am - 6 am time frame with accumulations in the 1"-2" range by daylight. Some of the higher elevations to our northeast may see a bit more. Road conditions will be hazardous in the morning hours. Snow continues on Monday with another inch possible by Monday evening. Total storm accumulations will range from 2"-4". The graphic below is from our friends at NashvilleWX (a weather blog of News 2, the ABC affiliate in Nashville, TN).

Monday's Forecast: After a brief snow event in the early morning hours, look for the cold front to pass through in the morning with strong winds cutting our 'feels like' down into the teens. Winds should settle down later in the day as more snow returns. An additional inch is possible. Monday night is expected to very cold with lows in the middle teens. Any precipitation that melts tomorrow will refreeze Monday night. Another cold  week ahead with continuing much-below normal temperatures.

Snow Storm Later This Week?

BRRRRRRRRRR: Downright cold to start your Sunday morning. Temperatures dropped to the single digits in some locations (like Crossville with 8°). Today's highs will struggle to reach the 20's once again. Yesterday's high here in Cookeville was just 22°. We dropped to 10° this morning just after sunrise. For tonight, expect lows to be even colder...around 5-8° here in Cookeville. Think it is cold here, how about going to the Great Smoky Mountains where it is: -5 Newfound Gap, 6 inches of snow and -5 atop Mt. LeConte, 13 inches of snow

SNOW STORM POSSIBILITIES: We're watching the potential of an accumulating snow event later this week. Forecasting models are beginning to get their act together in regards to the potential of this storm. While I don't go out on the limb to predict amounts, etc. I can tell you there is a good chance of accumulations in the 2-5" range should this pan out. For MUCH MORE INFORMATION on this potential storm, check out Justin Bruce's post at NashvilleWX.com.

Overnight Tornado Watch

**Potential Severe Weather Friday**
As you can tell on the following maps, a TORNADO WATCH (#761) has been issued for portions of West Tennessee. While this watch isn't for our immediate area, the potential exists on Friday for strong afternoon and evening thunderstorms. These storms could be accompanied with strong wind gusts, large and damaging hail, and frequent lightning strikes.

Our friend, Davis Nolan (at NEWS 2 and NashvilleWX.com), has an interesting post about severe weather potential for Friday and Friday night at their weather blog.

Turning Bitterly Cold Tonight (Snow Coming!)

More snow is on it's way today to the Cookeville, TN area.  Snow, in advance of a cold front, will be with us most of the afternoon and into the evening.  Very cold temperatures are on tap for us tonight as lows will drop to the mid teens.  Combine the cold with blustery winds and we'll see wind chills in the ZERO degree range.

*Latest, Local Forecast*

Minor accumulations can be expected with this snow event for today and tonight.  We'll watch the road conditions closely for any slick spots.

Sunday and Beyond...

SUNNY SUNDAY
Very nice weather ahead for our Sunday.  If you like sunshine and warm temperatures, Sunday is your kind of day! How about mostly sunny with highs right around 60 degrees and some wind?  Not too bad for February 1st!

*Latest, Local Forecast*

WHAT ABOUT SNOW??
Ok, let's get to the other weather going on for the next few days after that.  We have a developing low pressure system that is slated to track near the gulf coast on Monday and Tuesday.  It will make a big left turn and run up the I-95 corridor and east coast in the middle of next week.  This will, of course, create one massive snowstorm for the major metropolitan areas on the east coast.  What does that mean for us in Tennessee??  I'm glad you asked.

WHAT IT MEANS FOR US
There is the potential for this storm track to go a little north and west of the current track according to the latest computer models.  If it should track that way, we could see a our biggest snowfall of the current winter season.  I'm NOT saying that is going to happen...however, it is worth mentioning.  Right now, the thinking is for rain to change to snow on Monday.  Timing is around 12 noon or so, again not set in stone at this point.  There is also some potential (albeit; low) for snow on Sunday night....(I know..after a 60-degree high)

TURNING COLD AGAIN!
After a changeover to all snow on Monday afternoon, we expect light snow on Monday night with lows in the mid 20's.  Another impulse swings through on Tuesday giving us yet another shot of snow with highs struggling to reach 30 degrees.  Along with that extra chance of snow comes much colder temperatures as lows Tuesday night will be in the teens for most of us in Middle Tennessee.

WARMER WEATHER LATER IN WEEK
We do recover nicely by the end of the week where we might see highs in the upper 40's and lower 50's...but, we have to get through this potential winter weather situation first.  I'm not yet excited about our chances, however, I am starting to get there.  Should the computer models shape up tomorrow (by getting in more consistent agreement), then we can start talking about potential accumulations.  For now, let's just say we are going to see some winter weather precipitation during the first part of the workweek!!

Dry Here Again...and More On Fay

The lack of rainfall is really beginning to affect our area.  Great post from Lisa Patton over at Nashville WX entitled "It's Back"....she is talking about the Drought Monitor.

The computer models are certainly VERY interesting concerning Fay.  I would encourage you to check out the new video from James Spann down at ABC 33/40 in Birmingham.  Their website is AlabamaWX.com

Swinging back here to Cookeville, TN...we are now in our 14th day in a row without measurable rainfall.  We are starting to look like the summer of 2007.

Hot weather is the rule for Middle Tennessee today! While we will see low 90's here in Cookeville, others to our west will go even higher. Rain chances, however, increase for Tuesday and Wednesday.

Interesting Night Ahead...

...for some in Tennessee. As we watch the radar, we see some areas are getting heavy rain along with a few thunderstorms.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is out for West Tennessee through 2 a.m. It could be moved eastward as we go through the night. I don't think we'll see any rough weather here on the Plateau as dewpoints just don't support the development.

Feel free to cruise over to our friends at NashvilleWX and TennesseeWX for more information.

Stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio and local television for the latest updates.

Possible Severe Weather Today

....here in Middle Tennessee. We are seeing (as of 6:45 am) some stronger cells in southern portions of our area. A Wind Advisory is in effect until noon today as winds will gust to 45 mph and could be even stronger in the heavier storms. The tornado watch over West Tennessee hasn't been moved east toward us (yet) and we are hoping it is dropped for the entire area.

Temperatures will drop west to east as we go throughout the day. Right now we're at 62° with strong southerly winds.

Rainy Day!

Hail Picture courtesy of Nashville WX

It's Friday! I've been off work since Thursday afternoon before Christmas. Been the fastest 7 days of my life. I go back on Monday, December 31st for a day before getting Tuesday off.

Rain is falling now over much of Middle Tennessee. Showers are racing to the northeast at 55 mph. The forecast calls for a 100% chance of rain (makes sense since it is raining right now!) today and 50% tonight. We continue to watch a developing winter weather situation for just after the first of the year. While it is definitely going to be much colder, we are holding off on the precipitation for right now. I hope to have a much clearer picture for everyone by tonight.

There are hail pictures from Decaturville, TN over at News 2's Weather Site. Some in the Middle TN area are reporting a lot of lightning..none here in the Cookeville area.

Big Changes Ahead Mid-Week???

We're watching a possible BIG CHANGE in our weather for the mid-week! The map above is the 'forecast' 500mb map for Thursday. Note the depth of the Canadian air over our area!

Current temperatures this Sunday afternoon are in the middle 80's here on the Cumberland Plateau in Middle Tennessee. Normal highs and lows this time of year are 74 and 47. Record high for October 7th was 93 set back in 1916, the record low was 30 last set in 1980. Last year, we had a high and low of 66/43.

The great news is by Thursday, according to the forecast, we'll struggle to reach 70 each day through the weekend.

The good folks over at NashvilleWX.com talk about change as well.

I'll be with my wife on Tuesday evening as she is giving birth to our daughter, Mary Katherine. Check her website here.

New Purchase & Weather Stuff

Well, I finally did it! :-) Purchased a 'camcorder' or video camera. The reason for the purchase was that my wife and I are expecting a little one in mid to late October. Some of you probably thought it was for weather stuff. Well, I'll probably use it for that also! :-) But don't tell my bride!

We need rain. All of these beautiful, sunny days aren't helping with the huge deficit. Remnants of the tropical depression that came on shore in Florida MAY help us by Tuesday night and onward through Thursday as an accompanying cold front barrels through. This will lower our temps by 10+ degrees.

Speaking of temperatures, there is a great Autumn post over at NashvilleWx.com. You may click this link to go directly to it.

Over at our baby blog, I've posted a poll as to what you think our baby will weigh at birth. Go check it out!

Sunday Morning Update

Radar shows that numerous showers have broken out over the western sections of middle Tennessee. We should see some rain here in eastern sections also. Looking at our forecast, it's the first time we've had shower chances each day.

The drought continues to be a big story over all of Tennessee. It'll take several months of above average rainfall to put a dent in our shortfall.

Gabrielle is poised to hit the North Carolina coast today. The current update is located here.
The National Hurricane Center has done an excellent job tracking this system.

Lastly, Davis Nolan over at NashvilleWX (WKRN-ABC Station-News 2 in Nashville) blogged about the 'lowest' high in the last 49 days in Nashville. You can read about it by clicking here!

Change of Weather...FINALLY!

Jeff Ray over at News 2 in Nashville posted this morning about the weather pattern change. You can view it by clicking here.

Up here on the Plateau, our forecast doesn't have a single day in the 90's! We do have a pretty good chance for rain (about 50%) and the possibility for some STRONG storms today and tonight.

On this date in history:

August 29, 2005...Hurricane Katrina makes landfall in Louisiana and Mississippi.

Here in Middle TN: (courtesy of the NWS)

On August 29, 1963...One-day rainfall records are set at Pulaski (7.06") and Shelbyville (6.69").

On August 29, 1986...A low temperature of 44 degrees breaks Clarksville's record for August. In addition, Crossville's 44 degrees and Nashville's 49 set new daily record lows.

On August 29, 1990...Wind gust of 70 mph is recorded at Nashville.

Tuesday, August 21, 2007

Quick Update

The hot weather in Tennessee marches onward. We've almost gotten used to the fact of being near 100 that it is not even the lead story on the news anymore! As you can in the 7-day above (provided by NashvilleWX.com), the lowest high temperature through our period is 96°.

UPDATE ON DEAN
Dean continues to make his way from the Bay of Campeche toward a second landing on the eastern Mexican coast. The projected path has him crossing into Central Mexico and then being downgraded to a Tropical Depression. These can dump tremendous amounts of rain. Just ask the folks in Virginia in 1969 when Hurricane Camille has supposedly sputtered out as she turned eastward after going through Mississippi and Tennessee. The folks in some parts of Virginia received up to 31 inches of rainfall from her remnants. Amazing!

COCORAHS
We have a couple of new states coming on board. New York and North Carolina kick off on September 1st. Also, Alabama is slated for the late fall. Go to the CoCoRaHS site for more information.

The Heatwave Breaks When?

7-day forecast courtesy of WKRN-Nashville, TN

Interesting post this morning over at NashvilleWX.com

It talks about how through this heatwave, we've yet to break a record high. Nashville has recorded 21 days straight of 90° plus temperatures and 10 days in a row of 99° plus temps. Today's record is 102° and we could scare it. With TD 5 coming into the gulf and landing around Corpus Christi, that could affect our weather for the weekend with rain showers (let's hope so!)

Dean continues to chug away and now has winds of 50 mph and more. We will continue to watch this developing system.
