STRONG WEATHER POSSIBLE: A very nice Friday to start. We do have a cold front back to our west and this will causes storms to fire after lunch today in the Upper Cumberland. Rain amounts will generally be light, but in some storms, we may see as much as an inch.

REST OF WEEKEND FORECAST: We see a brief break on Saturday as storms will be poised just to our south. The frontal boundary begins to move north on Sunday and showers/thunderstorms will re-fire. 1-2" of rainfall isn't out of the question on Sunday night. Amounts could range up to 4" by the time this system leaves our area. Possible flooding may occur.

More Showers and Heavy Rain Coming

5:00 PM UPDATE:
Very strong storm poised to move in through the Cookeville area any time now. A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING is now in effect for Putnam County and surrounding counties until 5:30 pm. We could see winds, in the storms, gust to 70 mph!

4:45 PM UPDATE:
Heavy rains are knocking on the door for Putnam County. You can see skies on the Cookeville web cam getting quite dark looking west. It is just to the right at the top of the blog. LATEST, LOCAL RADAR!

BIG WEATHER EVENT:
At just after 4 pm, we see another line of showers heading towards the Cookeville area. We will certainly not see the amount of rainfall that folks in the Nashville area have seen. The damage estimates are still unknown, but most certainly will be in the 10's of millions, if not 100's of millions. There are unconfirmed reports that up to nine people have lost their lives across Tennessee.

Strong Storms Likely Today

TORNADO WATCH #131 now includes Putnam County through 11 o'clock this morning. It also includes Clay, Cumberland, Fentress, Jackson, Overton, Pickett, and White Counties along the Highland Rim and Cumberland Plateau.

VERY WARM THIS MORNING:
Temperatures have risen overnight along with the dew point value. It is muggy this morning and winds have gusted to nearly 30 mph. There is a strong line of storms back to our west that is poised to move through the Cookeville area later today. The forecast map (above) shows we are ground zero for possible flash flooding. I've said this over and over, if water is running over the road, TURN AROUND, DON'T DROWN!

AFTERNOON THOUGHTS:
I do expect to see a Tornado Watch issued for today across Cookeville and the Upper Cumberland. Very heavy rain along with frequent lightning are other issues we'll have to deal with as we go throughout the day. Overnight, the rains continue, heavy at times, and there are expectations of another 3-5" by Monday. The atmosphere is very unstable with a lot of shear and lift. This is conducive for the development of tornadic activity.

RAINFALL AMOUNTS SATURDAY:
Amazing numbers all across Tennessee. Here in the Cookeville area, 3+ inch reports are very common. We'll see more reports added to the CoCoRaHS map above. You can visit CoCoRaHS and find rainfall reports for your area. I've seen amounts of up to 15" across the Volunteer State from yesterday.

Saturday Night Wrap Up

MORE STORMS ON THE WAY:
As we go into the overnight period storms are once again firing across Middle Tennessee. At 10:25 pm, Nashville TV stations are running wall-to-wall weather coverage as rotating cells are being picked up on radar. A recent tornado watch has been issued for much of Middle Tennessee but DO NOT include (at this point) Putnam County along with the Cookeville area. There have been at least five deaths across the mid-state and the Harpeth River and Mill Creek are at record high levels. A rare Civil Emergency has been declared in Metro Davidson (Nashville) County.

RAIN IN COOKEVILLE:
Here in Cookeville, we've recorded 3.00" of rain since it began around 9 o'clock this morning. I've seen weather stations that have recorded up to 15" in and around the Franklin, TN (Williamson County) area. Ironically, our 3" is quite a bit more than the 1.61" measured for the entire month of April. One forecasting model is showing a potential of SIX MORE INCHES of rainfall by Monday morning across much of Middle Tennessee, including Cookeville.

UNSTABLE:
The atmosphere is very unstable and very supportive of severe weather development. We see, as the night wears on, storms become more numerous. Back to the west, large super cell activity was being seen back in Arkansas. This activity will move westward overnight, on Sunday and into Sunday night.  I'll be keeping the NOAA Weather Radio close by tonight as rapidly changing/deteriorating conditions could additional severe weather watches to be issued for Putnam County.

9:30 AM UPDATE....
Nearly 1/2"of rain has fallen since it began a little over 30 minutes ago! Speaking of rain, we ended April with just 1.66", which is almost 3" below our normal April of 4.60". This weekend's rains will probably exceed the entire month of April. We need it as 2010 totals are running around 5" behind.

TORNADO WATCH: Heavy rain is on our doorstep here in Cookeville. We are under a Tornado Watch until 11 am CDT. Most of Middle TN is under this watch. Remember, a watch means conditions are favorable. Stay close to TV, RADIO, and NOAA WEATHER RADIO.
