Busy Weather Week Ahead

After two days in the lower to mid 60's, we'll head back to the winter reality by the middle of this week. Before then, however, we'll enjoy another warm day today (high 60°) and tomorrow (high 61°) with rain developing on Tuesday. You could also hear a rumble of thunder on Tuesday and Tuesday night with the rain.

A Wind Advisory is in effect for tonight through Tuesday morning. The winds will continue to be blustery all the way through Tuesday as a strong cold front battles with the warm air for dominance. The cold air will finally win out on Wednesday and we may see a few snow flurries flying.

The rest of the week will be chilly with highs mainly in the 30's on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. As of now, I expect a warming trend next weekend.

So...What Now?

The heavy, wet snow never developed overnight as temperatures never quite cooperated. That being said, we aren't out of the woods just yet as more snow is developing and moving through the Upper Cumberland. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for the eastern Highland Rim and Cumberland Plateau through 3 o'clock this afternoon.

The biggest killer in this event was the changeover time. Had we changed to all snow by 10 pm last as was forecasted, we would have had 4-8" of snow...but forecasting snow is a complicated process and even though we know a lot about weather, sometimes it just fools us!

Enjoy the snow..we'll see waves of it throughout the morning hours and it just may be heavy at times!

Major Snowstorm Ahead

I think this snow projection map will thrill many and leave some scratching their heads! Currently, at 8:50 pm in Cookeville, it is 42°. We've got a ways to go in seeing the temperature drop before the snow can actually begin. Experts are saying we should see a changeover beginning around 10 pm with the heaviest snow coming in the very early morning hours through around 9 am.

*Winter Storm Warning*

The National Weather Service calls this storm 'a very dynamic and moist winter system'. The bullseye appears to be the northeastern section of middle Tennessee and along the Cumberland Plateau. That means Cookeville and vicinity! A Winter Storm Warning is in effect through 3 pm on Wednesday.

Temperatures overnight will hover around 30° or just below. This will cause for a wet, heavy snow to fall. This is great for building a snowman! Roads should improve quickly after sunrise since temperatures on Wednesday are expected to be above freezing.

By the time this current storm winds down, we'll see anywhere from 4-6" or HIGHER in the typical locations. So, get out your snow shovel, get ready to enjoy a gorgeous landscape, and travel carefully. This has been quite a year for snow!

The National Weather Service in Nashville has issued a Winter
Storm Warning for eastern middle Tennessee and plateau is in effect
from midnight tonight to 3 PM CST Wednesday.

* Geographic area: eastern middle Tennessee and the Cumberland
Plateau... including the cities of Crossville...Jamestown...Cookeville
and Spencer.

* Timing: snow accumulating around midnight and continuing
through Wednesday morning.

* Accumulations:4 to 6 inches of snow is expected...with locally
higher amounts possible.

* Impacts:travel conditions will become hazardous tonight and
Wednesday morning.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Winter Storm Warning means significant amounts of snow...sleet...and
ice are expected or occurring. This will make travel very
hazardous or impossible.

Another Snowstorm Coming

Special Weather Statement
Statement as of 5:13 AM CST on January 25, 2011

....A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for the midstate for late
tonight through Wednesday morning...

A developing low pressure system in the Gulf of Mexico will move
through the deep south today and Wednesday. This storm will spread
light rain across the area today. The precipitation will then
switch to a rain-snow mix this evening.

All snow is then expected from late Tuesday night into Wednesday.
Snow will begin to taper off Wednesday afternoon from the west as
the low pulls north eastward up the East Coast.

No snow accumulation is expected through Tuesday evening. However an
accumulating snow of 1 to 3 inches is likely late Tuesday night with
an additional 1 to 3 inches on Wednesday morning. Expected total
snow accumulations by Wednesday afternoon...1 to 3 inches in the
northwest counties...2 to 4 inches in the central counties
west of the plateau and 3 to 5 inches in the Cumberland plateau
counties.

Snow and Rain Chances All Week

As I said yesterday, winter continues to hang on across Middle Tennessee. I had quite a reaction to my SFS and SDS post. (if you don't know what I'm talking about, click here for more on SFS & SDS)

An interesting forecast overnight as a system moves through and we could see around 1/2" of snow by morning. Snow continues on Monday with another 1/2" possible before noon. It'll be warmer with a high of 47° (after a sunny high of 40° on Sunday) but that'll definitely be the warmest day of our 7-day forecast period.

Rain changes to snow overnight Monday with a rain/snow mix on Tuesday becoming ALL SNOW Tuesday night. Expect some accumulations from that system as well. Snow continue into Wednesday with flurries on Thursday and Thursday night.

More Snow (Special Weather Statement)

Definitely appears we are in this winter weather pattern to stay for the next couple of weeks. A series of disturbances will make their way towards us over the next 4-5 days creating the chances, once again, for the white stuff.

I'm hearing a new term called SFS (Snow Fatigue Syndrome) or SDS (Snow Derangement Syndrome). SFS is the non-serious variety where you suffer from a desire to drive south until you reach an area that is in the 70's while SDS is a much more serious issue that involves screaming and crying at such things like weather forecasts, school closing reports, etc. Some have gone so far as to yell at their local weather people. I won't name any names! :)

The following is a Special Weather Statement from the National Weather Service.

... More wintry weather on the way for middle Tennessee...

An active winter weather pattern will continue across the
region... bringing the possibility for accumulating snow in middle
Tennessee through the coming week.

The first system will bring light snowfall late Sunday afternoon
through Sunday night. Accumulations are expected to be less than
1 inch with this system... and mostly over the north half of the
mid state. The snow will slushy... and warmer temperatures on
Monday will cause most of it to melt by afternoon.

The next potential snow maker will be a large storm system that
will develop over the southeast states on Tuesday. This storm is
expected to produce widespread precipitation over the eastern
United States... with some of that precipitation pushing into mid
Tennessee. The exact strength and track of this storm are
uncertain... and minor changes could make big differences in the
amount of snow. At this time... it appears areas along and west of
I 65 could receive an inch or 2... while areas east of I 65
including the Cumberland Plateau could get several inches of snow
Tuesday and Tuesday night.

Later in the week... cold air and a series of weak systems could
bring additional light snowfall.

During this period of fast changing and complex winter weather
patterns... decision makers and people with travel plans should
monitor updated weather information frequently. Be prepared to
adjust your plans accordingly if winter weather advisories or
warnings are issued

Snow Update

Quite a nice event for us in Cookeville, TN. Snowing moderately at 6:20 pm and we expect a 2"-4" total accumulation before ending overnight. The heaviest of the snow will enter our area from around 6:30 pm until around 8:30 pm. Some higher elevation locations will, as usual, receive a little more accumulation. The back edge to this storm is out in West Tennessee at this hour and I expect we'll see if wrap up just after midnight. Some lingering flurries are possible.

No word yet on schools for Putnam County (as of 6:20 pm), however Jackson County, Overton County, Macon County, and Clay County schools have decided to close on Friday as well as many others across middle Tennessee. I expect to begin seeing decisions regarding school cancellations in the Upper Cumberland over the next couple of hours. My bet is a bunch of them will end up being closed.

Are You Ready For Some Snow?

Ready or not, here it comes. I would expect a late afternoon start to the white stuff. Here in the city of Cookeville, look for the 3-5 pm time frame for the beginning. Additionally, conditions will deteriorate quickly, especially after sunset. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 6 pm tonight through 6 am on Friday.

Total snow accumulations by midnight will be in the 2-3" range with locally higher amounts in the typical locations like Monterey, Hanging Limb, Jamestown, Allardt, Clarkrange, and Grimsley where we could see 4" plus measurements.

Again, road impacts will be significant especially after dark.

Significant Snow Coming Thursday

Statement as of 7:35 AM CST on January 18, 2011

....Another significant snowfall expected in middle Tennessee on Thursday
afternoon and Thursday night...

A very cold air mass will push southward out of Canada on Wednesday...
and reach the mid state on Thursday afternoon. A band of snow will
occur at the leading edge of this Canadian air...and push into
northwestern middle Tennessee Thursday afternoon. Temperatures will
warm briefly into the lower 40s Thursday morning...but will likely
tumble into the upper 20s in the Clarksville area by sunset Thursday.
Snowfall will likely accumulate in northwestern areas Thursday
afternoon...with accumulating snows pushing into other parts of
the mid state Thursday night...with temperatures tumbling through
the 20s area wide. Some of the snow could linger along the
Cumberland Plateau into early Friday...before tapering off to
flurries.

Right now...it looks like accumulations over the mid state will
average between one and two inches...with locally higher amounts
to 3 and 4 inches possible along the Cumberland Plateau.

If you are planning travel across the mid state later this
week...you should expect to encounter some wintry weather...starting
Thursday afternoon and lingering into Friday. Highs on Friday are
only forecast to be in the mid 20s to lower 30s.

Classes Canceled At Tennessee Tech on Thursday

Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville, TN has announced that classes at the university are canceled for Thursday, January 13th. All online classes will go on as normal. All offices will be open at Tech and food service will be available.

Due to the unsafe conditions caused by the inclement weather, Tennessee Tech University classes are cancelled on Thursday, Jan. 13.

University offices will be open on Thursday, and food services will be available to the campus community.

Update on Winter Storm Warning

The storm headed for Middle Tennessee is one of the rare gulf lows that will be all snow. Typically, as our friend Davis Nolan at News 2 says, we get a rain to snow event in these situations and that limits our snowfall accumulation. With COLD air already in place across the entire state, the large band of moisture headed our way will be in the form of all snow.

Interestingly enough, areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia will do even better (in terms of greater accumulations) than we will in Middle Tennessee. The greatest amounts for the Volunteer State will be to our south in a line from Columbia, Lawrenceburg, Winchester, to McMinnville where totals by Monday morning could well be in the 3-6" range.

Winter Storm Warning (All of Middle Tennessee)

The National Weather Service in Nashville, TN has posted a Winter Storm Warning for all of Middle TN from midnight tonight (Sunday) through 6 pm on Monday. This includes the city of Cookeville, Monterey, and Baxter along with Putnam and surrounding counties. The latest forecast is at the bottom of this report.

We expect snow to begin in Cookeville and surrounding towns by midnight and expect anywhere from 2 to 4" of accumulation with higher amounts on the Plateau toward Monterey, Jamestown, Clarkrange, Grimsley, Allardt, and Pall Mall.

We expect hazardous driving conditions to develop overnight as well. Remember, a winter storm warning means significant amounts of snow are expected or occurring and will make travel very hazardous or impossible.

Major Winter Storm Coming

A strong winter storm is headed for Middle Tennessee and we expect some impressive snow totals by Tuesday across much of our area. Below is how the National Weather Service sees it as of 9:20 pm Saturday night.

There is a Winter Storm Watch in effect from late Sunday night into Monday at noon. The watch will probably be replaced with a Winter Storm Warning on Sunday. Total snow accumulations will range from 1-6" depending on your location. The map above details the storm totals by Tuesday morning. I expect some isolated 10"+ amounts as well.

Snow Returns To Middle TN

A Winter Weather Advisory continues to be in effect for the Cookeville area through 6 pm this evening. We will see accumulations of snow range from 1" up to 3" by this evening with an additional inch expected overnight bringing total snow amounts in the 2" to 4" range. Obviously, the higher amounts are expected more in the higher elevations of the northeastern Cumberland Plateau (Fentress County) area.

Another winter weather producing system is expected late Sunday into Monday where we may see significant snowfall accumulations. I will update you on that system later tonight or first thing on Saturday.

Two shots at accumulating snow for both Wednesday and Friday. The Wednesday system will be a quick shot with light accumulations while Friday's snow chances look (right now) more impressive. We'll watch & see.

New Year's Day Update

More than 2" of rainfall has been recorded since we began 2011. January typically averages 5.11", so we're off to a great start. The rainfall should wind down this afternoon but we will have a dreary winter-like day. Great for watching football indoors!

Expect temperatures to continue falling throughout the day. At 12:35 pm, it is 44.2° down from 57.8° at 8 o'clock this morning.

Heavy Rain Overnight (More On The Way)

2011 arrives with a bang weather wise. Strong showers and possibly a thunderstorm through daybreak with a low of only about 55°. Heavy rains can be expected with winds gusting up to 35 mph. 100% chance of precipitation.

For Saturday, expect temperatures to fall through the day with rain, heavy at times, especially in the morning. Look for us to fall through the 40's in the afternoon with gusty north northwest winds to 30 mph. The rest of the cool forecast is below at the link.
