Nice Saturday Ahead (Shower Chance Later)

Courtesy: NOAA/NWS/NWS
**SATURDAY NOTES**
A beautiful morning here in Cookeville. We've already warmed to 68° at 8:30 a.m. from a morning low of 54°. Expect to see a high of 80° this afternoon with a chance of thundershowers. The cause of these showers is a fast-moving frontal system that will march through Kentucky today (see map above) setting off showers and thunderstorms. Some of these storms could be VERY strong late this afternoon. The areas east of I-65 and north of I-40 have the great chance for seeing these storms. Sunny skies with highs in the lower 80's for Sunday.

**Weather History for This Date**

On May 30, 1830...
A devastating tornado strikes Charlotte and surrounding areas. The tornado levels all but two buildings, including the first courthouse -- a two-story brick structure. The Voorhies-James house and one other building are the only ones left. Most public records from the courthouse, as well as those housed in law offices, are blown into the countryside. Some are recovered, but many are never found. Some books are found several miles away. The roof of the jail is found 13 miles away. This is the first recorded tornado ever in Middle Tennessee.
On May 30, 1987...
Golfball size hail is reported in Montgomery County.
On May 30, 1879...
Two tornadoes strike the town of Irving, Kansas within a 45-minute period. Much of the town was destroyed.

Actual Sunshine Today

**Friday Notes**
Morning clouds give way to wonderful sunshine today. Expect a high around 76°..the weekend is looking quite nice with temperatures warming each day. Expect highs around 80° on Saturday and Sunday.

**Monster rainfall amounts for May**
At my CoCoRaHS weather station (TN-PM-5), I've measured 9.52" for May. This ranks as the 4th rainiest May in Cookeville history (since 1914). Incredibly, we had measurable precipitation 23 of 29 days this month. Looking around at other stations here in Putnam County, a station near Baxter (TN-PM-20) recorded 11.64" this month. I appreciate our CoCoRaHS team here in this county and their dedication to measuring the rainfall.  You, too, can participate. Back To Work

BIG STORM ON MEMORIAL DAY
It is back-to-work for most of us today. The weekend was quite nice with a few passing thundershowers. On Monday, a big storm here in Cookeville contained a lot of lightning and did some minor damage in the downtown area.

DANGEROUS LIGHTNING POSSIBLE
Be aware that we expect much of the same today. If thunder roars, get indoors. Finally, the National Weather Service has issued a Public Information Statement about the dangerous lightning.

Public Information Statement

PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT

NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE NASHVILLE TN

111 PM CDT SUN MAY 24 2009

MANY PEOPLE ARE LOOKING FOR TIME TO GET OUTDOORS THIS WEEKEND...AND
TO ENJOY THE MEMORIAL DAY HOLIDAY. HOWEVER...AS YOU HEAD
OUTDOORS...YOU SHOULD REMEMBER THAT THE CHANCE FOR THUNDERSTORMS
WILL BE WITH US THROUGH TOMORROW. THIS MEANS YOU WILL PROBABLY SEE
LIGHTNING IN YOUR AREA AT SOME POINT OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS.

REMEMBER...WHEN THUNDER ROARS...GET INDOORS.

WATCH FOR DEVELOPING THUNDERSTORMS...ESPECIALLY IN THE
AFTERNOON...AND SEEK SHELTER WHEN STORMS APPROACH YOUR AREA.
KEEP A WEATHER RADIO HANDY...ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO GO
BOATING...AND BE READY TO SEEK SAFE HARBOR IF STORMS DEVELOP. AN
ISOLATED BOAT ON THE WATER IS AN EASY TARGET FOR LIGHTNING. IN
FACT...ANY ISOLATED STRUCTURE TENDS TO ATTRACT LIGHTNING. THIS
MEANS...YOU SHOULD AVOID STANDING UNDER TREES...OR REMAINING ON
THE GOLF COURSE...WHEN THUNDERSTORMS MOVE IN. IT IS ALWAYS BEST TO
MOVE INSIDE A HOUSE OR OTHER STURDY BUILDING WHEN THUNDERSTORMS OCCUR.

ALSO...REMEMBER...THAT LIGHTNING CAN STRIKE...AND KILL...FROM AT
LEAST SEVERAL MILES AWAY. THE THUNDERSTORM DOES NOT HAVE TO BE
RIGHT OVER YOU TO BE DANGEROUS.

KEEPING LIGHTNING SAFETY IN MIND CAN SAVE YOUR LIFE. WE...HERE AT
THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE...HOPE YOU HAVE A SAFE AND ENJOYABLE
HOLIDAY.

.NOW...
THROUGH 300 PM...YOU CAN EXPECT AN INCREASED CHANCE FOR LIGHTNING
ACROSS THE SOUTHWESTERN HALF OF THE MID STATE. A SIMILAR INCREASE
IN LIGHTNING POTENTIAL WILL LIKELY TAKE PLACE OVER THE NORTHEASTERN
HALF OF THE AREA BETWEEN MID AND LATE AFTERNOON. THE ATMOSPHERE
WILL BE INCREASING CONDUCIVE FOR THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT AS THE
AFTERNOON WEARS ON...AND YOU CAN EXPECT THE STORMS TO PRODUCE BRIEF...
TORRENTIAL DOWNPOURS. ANYONE PLANNING OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES FOR THE
REST OF THE DAY SHOULD KEEP THIS IN MIND...AND BOATERS SHOULD SEEK
SAFE HARBOR WHEN THUNDERSTORMS DEVELOP.

Rain Creeping In for Memorial Day Weekend

If you've read this weather blog for any time at all, you know that I've constantly repeated the following phrase. "Our forecast is subject to change"

Today's forecast is one of those changed ones from yesterday. A pesky low-pressure system off the east coast of northern Florida will continue to affect our weather throughout the holiday weekend. While rainfall amounts won't be particularly heavy, we will see rain each day through Memorial Day. Chances increase from  30% today up to 60% for Saturday night and Sunday.

*Latest Local Forecast*

Weather History for This Date
1989-A tornado strikes Giles County, staying on the ground for 9 miles, killing one and injuring two near the Minor Hill community.
1933-A massive dust storm obscured the approach of an F4 tornado that wiped out the business district of Liberal, Kansas. Four people died. The description from the Dodge City, Kansas weather office follows: "A tornado moved north northeast from 7 miles south southwest of
Liberal Kansas, through that town.  This tornado also struck in
the total darkness of a depression era dust storm.  It masked
this entire western Kansas outbreak.  It destroyed the business
district and the northwest residential area.  At least 165 homes
and 44 businesses were badly damaged or destroyed.  Four people were
killed and 150 injured.  Damage was $750,000."

Yesterday, I promised a look at the upcoming Memorial Day holiday weekend.  We'll have that for you in just a moment.  For today, take yesterday's weather and carbon copy it with a few degrees added to our high temperature. High temperature today will be around 80° under beautiful, sunny skies! Chamber of Commerce weather for sure.

Memorial Day Weekend Forecast
I want to preface this forecast by saying (as I always do) "It is early and things could change." Now that I've said that, here is my thinking for the Memorial Day weekend.  We see a 'slight' chance for showers and thunderstorms each day beginning on Friday. The rain-producing fronts will travel to the north of us (typical for this time of year). Occasionally, over the weekend, we may seeing a passing or pop-up thundershower..however, most of us will stay dry.  Go ahead and plan that picnic, that trip to the lake, or that backyard get-together with family and friends.  Highs will be in the 80's and the humidity will be higher than the last few days.

Friday Storms and more Saturday Storms

MORE RAIN FOR THE BUCKET
Storms are possible today as a warm front lifts northward. This should set off some showers along with a few thunderstorms this afternoon. Things settle down tonight, but kick up once again on Saturday as an approaching cold front will bring a line of storms through the Cookeville area. Expect highs today to be just over 80° while Saturday's highs will be a little cooler at 74°. While some of the storms could be very strong, they will NOT reach severe limits for now.

The good news is once we get through Saturday, a long dry-spell is in our forecast. Possibly all of the entire work-week. We'll watch the forecast and keep you updated.

How much rain has fallen, Michael?
Glad I've been asked this question a lot lately. According to my CoCoRaHS station's records, we have recorded 6.88" through my last observation at 7:00 this morning for May. Some stations in our county are well over 7". The most I've found in Tennessee is 12.61" at a station near Altamont in Grundy County. You can record rain for us by signing up for CoCoRaHS .

THUNDERBOOMERS
Rain chances are on the increase today as a line of storms is crossing the Tennessee river in the western part of the state at 6:30 this morning.  It appears, however, the line is losing it's punch. SIDE NOTE
My parents have returned from a 17-day trip across the Atlantic Ocean on a cruise ship.  They own a houseboat on beautiful Center Hill Lake.  On  the day they left, the depth finder on their boat said it was setting in 60 feet of water.  Of course, we received nearly 7 inches of rain while they were gone.  When they checked it on Tuesday, the depth finder said 87 feet.  An incredible rise of 27 feet at Center Hill.  The floodgates had to be opened to let some water out of the lake.  This is the first time they've had to open the gates in several years.

Beautiful sunshine this Tuesday morning and it is the first day in the last 12 that we didn't have measurable precipitation in the CoCoRaHS rain gauge!! Highs will reach the middle 70's.  Unfortunately, it doesn't last long as rain is expected for Wednesday and Thursday.  Enjoy our sunny Tuesday!

More Rainfall Analysis (Happy Mom's Day)

Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there.

More rainfall analysis for you today.
We are definitely in a rainy pattern.

The evidence:
5 out of the last 6 months, we've exceeded the monthly average. Prior to that, only once in the previous 12 months did we reach the average

2007 was the driest year on record (since 1914) in Cookeville. We recorded just 36.75" of rain whereas through the first 4 months of this year plus the first 10 days of May, we are sitting at nearly 28".

The record amount of rain is 76.46" from 1998. With all the rain we've had, we are on pace to reach 66" this year.  If we just have 'normal' amounts of rain the rest of 2009, our total will be just under 60". Really makes the 76+ amount from 1998 look like a lot of rainfall. With the last few years well below normal, 2009 rains seem like record-breakers!

Rainfall Updates and History

Rain has pounded Middle Tennessee once again. A flash flood watch continues for all of our area.

More than a dozen CoCoRaHS stations have measured at least 10" of rain (the most is 12" in Bell Buckle of Bedford County), while another 20 stations have recorded 9"+ and another 20+ have at least 8" this month.

Looking over my information, if May ended today, we'd have the 14th rainiest May since records have been kept in Cookeville (from 1914). I've had measurable rainfall in my gauge each day this month.

This is the list of May's biggest rains...
1984  13.06"
2003  12.35
1983  11.41
1974   8.75
1973   8.63
1998   8.21
1995   8.11
1979   7.66
1933   7.61
1989   7.36
1971   7.28
1967   6.81
1915   6.61
2009   6.45 (since May to 2 pm today)

Interestingly enough,
May 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008 were among driest Mays ever.

2005-1.15" 3rd most dry ever
2006-2.26" 9th most dry ever
2007-2.38" 11th most dry ever
2008-3.27" 23rd most dry ever

No Sun Today

RAIN..RAIN..and more RAIN
In yesterday's post, I talked about finally seeing some sunshine here in Cookeville.  Well...I was wrong. A low-pressure system has formed and is moving through our area. Rain chances are minor (about 20%), but it is raining while I am writing this post (7:10 a.m). We have a greater chance of showers and thunderstorms for Wednesday (around 70%) as yet another system makes its way to us.

WEEK'S OUTLOOK
Rain will stick with us through Saturday. Wouldn't be surprised to see another 2-4 inches of rain possible for the next several days. This could prompt more FLOOD WATCHES/ADVISORIES, etc.

**1200 POSTS**
Yesterday's post (Flooding Possible) was #1200 for this weather blog.  Who would have thought that you all would read this faithfully, who would have thought you all would e-mail for specific forecasts for certain places..who would have thought I would have gotten the text messages, phone calls, Facebook messages, etc...who would have thought I would be getting paid to write about weather for a National website.  Who would have thought I'd be coordinating a very important program for the Cookeville/Putnam County area. A very big thank-you to ALL of you.

**RAIN, RAIN, and MORE RAIN**
Rain is falling here in Cookeville as I write this.  We've recorded 2.64" since rain began on Friday.  Typically, for all of May, we receive 4.71". Heavy rain (according to radar) is streaming into our area along a warm front which is moving back to the north.  This front will stall over our area and impulses will ride up the stationary front giving us chances for heavy rain the rest of today and tonight.

Rain, Rain, and more Rain!

**Weekend Outlook**
We've received .71" of rainfall here in Cookeville overnight.  During the next couple of days, a cold front will stall just to our west allowing warm, moist air to be pumped into the Middle Tennessee area.  This will support ACTIVE weather, including the possibilities of strong storms and heavy rainfall.  At this point, I do not believe the entire weekend will be a washout, but encourage you to stay in touch with the weather. I will monitor the situation, so check back frequently and SIGN-UP for Twitter and follow me.  I am: http://twitter.com/cookevillewxguy

*Latest, Local Forecast*

Weather History for This Date
On May 1st, 1963..the temperature drops to 34° in Nashville, the lowest ever recorded in May!
In 1950, a strong winter storm smacked the Black Hills area of the Dakotas with lightning and heavy snow.  Up to 30 inches was recorded and deep drifts driven by 70+ mph winds!

Rain Update:
We finished the month of April with 6.39" here in Cookeville.  This gives us a 2009 total of 21.25".  Our normal for April is 4.60, while our normal for the first four months of the year is 20.05". We are much further ahead than the last couple of years. We do, however, see a big dropoff in rain during May-August, then we hit the driest months of September and October.  Let's hope we continue in the good rain pattern.

Have an awesome weekend...I will be 'on the look-out' for any severe weather.
