Dry and Cooler

50's BY FRIDAY MORNING:
The fantastic weather continues across Middle TN. We have another treat for you coming up overnight this evening into Friday morning. I expect our temperatures will drop into the middle 50's by sunrise Friday morning. That'll be one of the coolest mornings yet of our summer. Hard to believe we were in the 90's just four short days ago.

SUPER THURSDAY:
Looking at this afternoon's forecast, expect highs around 83° with a slight northerly breeze. Very comfortable day!

WEEKEND OUTLOOK:
Expect temperatures this weekend to warm a few degrees with highs in the middle to upper 80's, but with no big increase in humidity. The dry pattern hangs on as we see no chance for rain over the 7-day forecast period. Overnight lows will range from the lower to mid 60's.

Comfortable Start, Becoming Quite Warm

Awesome Morning:
Have been outside early this morning? Temperatures were in the 60's to start, just after sunrise. We'll rise through the 70's this morning to a high of 90° by late this afternoon. Some areas, especially low-lying and around bodies of water, are dealing with dense fog. Nice weekend coming, but rain is set to return late Saturday night into Sunday.

Rainfall Measurements:
Some incredible numbers are coming out concerning the rain from Tuesday and Wednesday. The map below is clickable and shows amounts across Tennessee and a closer look across the Middle TN section.  Map number 3 is the 24-hour rainfall amount. Some amazing numbers.

Several of you have asked me and I can confirm that we received more rain in a shorter period of time from this system than the devastating floods from last September. I'll have more information to share in the coming days.

Putnam County Rainfall This Week:
CoCoRaHS Stations showed we received as little as 3.25" up in Monterey to 5.66" in southeast Cookeville up to 7-8" northeast of town to 11-12" north of Cookeville. The highest amount was station TN-PM-19 with 12.49". They are located 6.5 miles northwest of the courthouse square. The most severe damage in the county was out that way. CoCoRaHS is so valuable and you can join completely free with a nominal cost for the rain gauge. E-MAIL ME for more information or visit the CoCoRaHS website.

Nice Day Later

It will be a good day to assess damage from yesterday's storms. We expect highs to reach around 88° this afternoon. Can't rule out some morning showers.

Short post this morning due to travel. Over the past two mornings, my rain gauge total is 8.31" INCREDIBLE. I've heard a 13" report just to the north of Cookeville. Hope to verify that later today. I'll be speaking with someone from the National Weather Service later today to verify whether our rainfall amount yesterday set an all-time single day record in Cookeville.

In the midnight to midnight 24-hour period period, we measured 6.72".

Rain Chances Increasing

LIKELY SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS THROUGH FRIDAY:
We will see our rain chances increase today through Friday at gulf moisture will be pumped up into much of Tennessee. Here in Cookeville, our best chances for wet weather are Wednesday and Wednesday night. For today, a 50/50 shot at storms with a high of 'just' 88°.

WEATHER HISTORY:
On this date in 1969 (August 17), the Mississippi Gulf Coast was pounded by Hurricane Camille. It was the 2nd most destructive hurricane (behind Katrina, which hit the same area) in American history. Living in south Mississippi in the early 70's and seeing the destruction shaped my interest in weather.

Typically during the summer you'll see our highs occur later in the afternoon hours. Generally, they are from 4:00 to 5:00 pm.

HEAVY RAINS POSSIBLE
Our outlook over the next 7 days is for cooler temps (lows tonight in the lower to mid 60's across the region) with rainfall moving in for both Tuesday and Wednesday. Best chance for heavy rain is on Wednesday. We'll stay in the upper 80's to near 90° for the period.

Another Hot Day

MID TO UPPER 90's:
Expect another day with high temps. We're already up in the 80's this morning across the Cookeville area. Showers and storms move in later today and tonight with 'cooler' weather ahead for Friday and Saturday as highs will 'only' reach from near 90° to the lower 90's. By the way, computer forecasting models are showing the possibility of up to an inch of rain between late this afternoon and Friday morning. Enjoy your day!

DID YOU HEAR IT?

  • Speaking of hot weather, the first 4 days of August have had an average high of 96.5°

VERY HOT WEATHER CONTINUES:
All sorts of heat warnings today across Middle TN. Here in Cookeville, we are under a Heat Advisory. From Lebanon westward into Arkansas, Missouri, Texas, and Oklahoma.

Expect highs here today to reach near 100°. The record this date is 99° from 1930. If you're outside for extended periods of time, it is imperative that you keep yourself hydrated with water or some sort of sports-type drink. This heat is very dangerous, especially since our society has become more indoor oriented.

Hot Week Ahead

HIGHS IN 90's:
Prepare for the hot weather to continue this week as we'll see highs in the 90's each day. In fact, out of the last 11 days, we've had just one (here in Cookeville) that hasn't 90+. We'll see thunderstorm chances increase by Wednesday, but they will be widely scattered. There are heat warnings for the southwestern sections of Middle TN.

Don't forget that summer heat is a major killer. You can get more information by going to the National Weather Service (Nashville office) website.

I'll post a month in review concerning the facts and figures about July. As you can imagine, the operative word for July 2010 was HOT!
