Rain Chances Increase

RAIN OR NOT?
A complicated forecast over the next few days. Showers and thunderstorms are in the forecast each day through the next 5 days, but not everyone will see rain across Middle Tennessee. For instance, areas around the Tennessee River saw rain on Tuesday, but the rest of us did not. If you're interested in the complete (meteorological-type) thoughts on the forecast, click here.

If you have a new garden, I would encourage you to give it some water as the showers will be more of the hit or miss variety.

Some Shower Activity

0 Great Comments
As promised in yesterday's post, we did see some showers come through.

A LITTLE RAIN
A light band of rain showers (most seeing less than .05") with some thunder slid through the Cookeville area about an hour ago. Some heavier, embedded thundershowers were to our south in Grundy County and near Chattanooga. Most of these shower and storms were moving eastward at around 40 mph. The heavier storms could contain small hail and winds to 30 mph. They should die down around dark.

WEEKEND OUTLOOK
Expect a nice evening ahead after the showers move through your area. Overnight low around 60° with highs reaching the middle 80's in the Upper Cumberland on Friday, the same for Saturday, and 81° on Sunday!  Great weekend ahead!

Possible Severe Weather Today

0 Great Comments

Sunday Morning Notes
Our chances for severe weather increase today as a cold front approaches from out west.  It is currently located near Arkansas. The good news is the rain/clouds this morning are keeping the atmosphere very stable. Instability is a key ingredient for severe storms. Right now, we just don't have that. There is some lightning occurring back in Arkansas and in central sections of Mississippi...but that is over 200 miles away.

Sometimes We Get It Wrong
I said yesterday we'd see a sunny day today...well, sometimes in this weather business, things don't go as planned.  The clouds have been very stubborn and will continue to stick around. Folks in West Tennessee will have the best chance to some sunshine today.  Nashville area will see a peek or two of sun by later this afternoon.  Here in Cookeville, I think we'll stay mostly cloudy throughout the afternoon.  Let's hope I am WRONG!  A further look into our forecast shows sunshine for Thursday with highs in the mid 60's and more sun for Friday, highs in the upper 60's.  Rain possible for the weekend.

Snow is falling in Middle Tennessee this morning.  At times, it comes down at quite a clip for a bit..then slows down to almost very light flurries.  Quite exciting for April.  Just saw a 'tweet' from a Twitter person who recorded 10+ inches in the Smoky Mountains.

Thursday's Storms Update (Friday's Weather)

0 Great Comments
Nashville Tornado
An outbreak of severe weather yesterday afternoon wreaked havoc across the Nashville area.  A tornado struck just east of downtown near the Murfreesboro Road and Briley Parkway intersections.  It caused damage to several businesses.  On I-40 near the airport, the same funnel caused two semi-trailer trucks to overturn. Nashville's International Airport has to close for a short period and evacuated the tower (air traffic controllers) employees. No major injuries are known at this time.  Lightning caused a fire at an NHC nursing home facility in Franklin, just south of Nashville.  No injuries reported in that incident.

Flooding A Problem
Flooding has been a major problem in West Nashville along with many communities in the mid-state. A water rescue was made in downtown Nashville. No less than a dozen warnings for various flood-type situations primarily south of Nashville.

Record Set
Nashville broke the all-time rain record for yesterday as 1.8" was measured through midnight.  The old record of 1.61" was set back in 1979.  Here in Cookeville, I measured 1.75" as of 7:00 this morning. Many reports of more than 2" of rainfall measured by CoCoRaHS volunteers.

Awesome Wednesday (Stormy Thursday?)

0 Great Comments
Wonderful Wednesday
The great news is storms didn't develop yesterday, however, a cold wind blew yesterday afternoon under a cloudy sky making conditions feel quite chilly.  Showers after midnight dropped .48" in the CoCoRaHS rain gauge. Speaking of CoCoRaHS , we've had several to sign-up for the volunteer program.  I'd really like to see more folks get involved.  If you're interested in measuring rainfall for us, go to their website or contact me

Wednesday's weather will be picture perfect.  Highs in the mid 60's here in the Cookeville area under a bright, sunny sky.  Rain returns Thursday afternoon and we may see some strong storms on Thursday night. I believe most of the severe weather will remain to our south.
