Sunday Sunshine
WINTER HANGS ON: Looking out a few days, another impulse is expected to swing through on Monday night and Tuesday giving us a slight chance for a wintry mix. At this point, I'm not confident of big accumulation though. In the next seven days, there is a potential for another bout of winter precipitation similar to this weekend's storm around Friday. We'll keep an eye on it for sure. Meteorologist Dale Bader, a weather friend located in Huntsville, Alabama, addresses this potential in a blog posting.

Saturday Morning Winter Storm Report
Heading out to pickup my teenage daughter from a friend's house. Car was completely iced over and getting the door open was quite a challenge. Will post when I return on road conditions. Betting it's going to be quite bad! Current temperature 22.8° with a calm wind. CHURCH @ TRINITY ASSEMBLY in Algood will be one service only at 10:30 on Sunday morning. If you cannot make it, watch LIVE on the web site.
DANGEROUS ROAD CONDITIONS: Snow, sleet, and freezing rain fell most of Friday through this morning. Current temperatures are 24° in Cookeville. We'll touch on Saturday's weather outlook in a few minutes. A quick check of measurements in Putnam County show 2.5" at Monterey to 4" in Cookeville. Across the state of Tennessee, we've seen as much as 7" reported in Fentress County. I'll post a map showing accumulation totals.
SATURDAY OUTLOOK: Currently, snow is falling again across the city and we expect to continue off and on today with another inch of accumulation possible. Temperatures will stay between the mid 20's to the upper 20's. Not much, if any, melting is expected. Tonight will be another dangerous time on the roads as temperatures will plummet to around 11° by sunrise.

Winter Storm Imminent
The above maps from the National Weather Service shows a HIGH PROBABILITY of at least a 4" snow for all of Tennessee from 6 am Friday through 6 am Saturday. I'm sure both students & teachers are doing their snow dance! Expect a Winter Storm Warning to be issued later today for Middle Tennessee. If you have travel plans for Friday, expect difficulties due to this major winter storm. Forecasting models are consistent and show at least a 5" accumulation along the I-40 corridor. Some locations, obviously, will get more than this. The forecast for the Cookeville area will range from a 3-6" amount. Lower numbers if the low-pressure system tracks further south. In southern Middle TN, there are very real possibilities of an icing event...which is always dangerous.
In this morning's forecast discussion from the WFO (Weather Forecast Office) in Nashville, they warned that 'conditions could deteriorate rapidly' and 'decision makers should keep that in mind.'

Winter Storm Friday
**10:30 PM UPDATE**
The Winter Storm Watch remains in effect and latest forecasting models portend of a big winter weather event with impressive storm totals. While it is my wish to leave the accumulation amounts to the professionals, I know many of you have been asking "How Much"!! I appreciate your interest and can tell you that if everything holds together, this will be a storm to remember. We have an opportunity to get into the 6-8" range by Saturday morning. With that being said, one must remember this is a fluid situation with many components. So, if you click back on here tomorrow at noon and see a 2-4" prediction, don't get mad, just enjoy the winter weather. It is entirely possible that we all wake-up on Friday morning and don't see anything going on. Arrival times are fluctuating between a sunrise to 10 a.m. start to the snow falling at a decent rate. Once it does arrive, however, expect it to be consistent. I will update as necessary & expect a Winter Storm Warning to be issued sometime on Thursday.

Winter Storm Ahead For Area
WINTER STORM OUTLOOK: For Thursday, slight rain chances, high 47°. Then the fun begins overnight Thursday into Friday as a major storm system is poised to strike Middle Tennessee with a collection of freezing rain, sleet and snow. For the most part, we (in Cookeville) will miss out on the freezing rain, but will see significant sleet and snow on Friday during the afternoon hours. By Friday evening, I expect and all snow event that will last through Saturday. We can certainly expect the Weather Forecast Office in Nashville to issue a Winter Storm Watch for Friday. SEE THEIR MAP ABOVE! They expect a 4" snow in the Music City. At this point, we should expect around 4-6" total snowfall accumulations here in the Cookeville area with even higher amounts in the usual places like Monterey, Jamestown, Clarkrange, Oneida, etc. FYI, the record in Cookeville for Friday is 1.5" in 1936 and 1" for Saturday set back in 1981. Both those records will probably fall!

1943- Temperature at Clarksville climbs to 82 degrees. It's the warmest temperature ever observed there in January.
1963- Temperature at Kingston Springs drops to -30 degrees, which is the lowest temperature ever recorded in Middle Tennessee, and comes within 2 degrees of tying the all-time record low for Tennessee (Mountain City, 12/30/1917). Other record lows include Clarksville (-17), Dover (-24), Lafayette (-20), Linden (-18), Portland (-19), Springfield (-18), and Waverly (-26). In fact, Waverly sees its temperature drop by 80 degrees with the passage of the strongest cold front in mid state history. Five inches of snow accompany the dramatic change in temperature. The Duck River freezes solid from bank to bank for the first time since 1898. Harbors along the Tennessee River also freeze. It is considered the worst winter weather since the 1951 ice storm.
1972- Nashville's 78 degrees sets a record high for January.

The above slideshow is the opening of my new Davis Vantage Vue. It was a Christmas present and a huge upgrade from my current station. It worked a few minutes after I removed it. A very impressive weather station. It is rugged, well-built, easy to assemble, and the instructions were written by someone who speaks English as their first language.
I hope to be streaming it live to my web site and other places (like Wunderground, CWOP, Awekas, WeatherForYou, and WeatherBug) very, very soon. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask me.

Weekend Rain Ahead
INTERESTING FACT: Did you know the average temperature (combined high and low) for the first 14 days of January is just 20.9° here in Cookeville. Compare that with our normal of 35.5° and contrast that against the record, which is 51.9° that occurred back in 2005. Is it any wonder that most of our ponds are frozen across the Upper Cumberlands?

Warmer Days
COLD RUN OVER FOR NOW: Teens this morning across the area, but I have good news! Sunny skies and 44° today across Cookeville, TN. We've not been that warm since last year (December 31, 2009). Much of the snow will melt today and we will probably see most, if not all, of school systems back in session on Thursday. We do start with a SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT through 9 o'clock this morning for freezing fog in some locations. That could make bridges and overpasses slippery. The forecast (below) looks nice through Friday night with highs moderating into the 50's on Thursday and Friday. Expect rain this weekend with cooler temperatures. The National Weather Service is calling the warm up a Major Pattern Change. The map above shows just how quiet Tennessee is right and the influencing weather factors will come from the south for a while as opposed to the very cold north.
Weather History for This Date
1968 - Dover (in West Tennessee) measures 8 and 1/2 inches of snow.
