Some Sunshine But Chilly For Saturday - Warmer Weather Ahead

We'll begin the process of warming up around the Cookeville area. For today (Saturday), highs will be in the lower 40's with skies becoming partly cloudy and somewhat sunny. We started in the 20's this morning and there are a few slick spots on side streets from yesterday's cold rain and overnight freezing fog. For Saturday night and early Sunday morning, skies will be clear to partly cloudy with a low of 26°.

TEMPS RISE THIS WEEK
The warm up begins in earnest on Sunday with a high into the lower 50's. Rain chances enter the picture for Sunday night (although a low chance - just 30%) and a low of 41°. The slight rain chance continues for both Monday and Monday with temp ranges of 62° down to 49°.

The best day should be Tuesday with a partly cloudy sky and a high of 66°. Thunderstorms become likely on Tuesday night and Wednesday with a low of 52° and a high of 58°. Chilly weather returns for Wednesday night through Friday.

Warming Up

NICE AND SUNNY:
If you like warmer weather in the winter, you'll love the next couple of days. I expect plenty of sunshine and temperatures to be 60° today (Monday) across the Highlands of Tennessee. On Tuesday, expect even warmer temperatures with highs near 65° in Cookeville coupled with increasing clouds along with gusty southerly winds.

CHANGES TO THE BLOG:
Your eyes are not deceiving you...I do have some changes to the blog in terms of color, font, and small change to the layout. We'll have more changes in the coming days.

RAIN RETURNING:
Rain shows up on Tuesday night and will hang around all the way through the early weekend as a pattern change will affect our weather.

ARCTIC AIR TO MAKE IT'S RETURN:
In Saturday's post we discussed the very cold air in Alaska and this will eventually filter it's way down to the mainland of the United States and affect our weather.  We do think temperatures will go back to more seasonal highs for winter as we get to the weekend with the possibility of a return to winter-type conditions. That, however, is a quite a distance out and things do change in Tennessee quickly.

SPOTTER TRAINING CLASS:
Next Saturday, February 4th is the 2012 SkyWarn Spotter Training Class in Cookeville. It will be held at the TTU College of Nursing Auditorium located at 10 W. 7th Street in Cookeville. The class is free and expected to last around 2 hours. Both the beginner and intermediate classes will be taught so if you've never been through training or if you've not attended in a couple of year, I encourage you to go!

Storm Chances and Hot

STORMS POPPING
The National Weather Service says it is a stormy and sizzling Saturday. Look for mostly sunny skies with a 50% chance of thunderstorms today and a high of 90° for Cookeville and vicinity. Tonight, a 50% of showers and thunderstorms continues, low of 67° by sunrise on Sunday. Then it appears we back out of the 90's for Sunday and beyond as highs will mainly be in the middle to upper 80's.

SPEAKING OF HEAT:

  • First 10 days of June have averaged 91.9°. Highest since records have been kept (late 1890's)
  • Just 2 days below 90° in June, both of those were highs of 89°
  • Only 1 record high set for Cookeville and that was on June 1st
  • 162 daily records across TN set since June 1st
  • Back in 2003, we went 22 consecutive May/June days with COOLER than normal temps!

SKYWARN TRAINING CLASS
Speaking of storms, our next Storm Spotters Training Class is coming up on July 14th at 6 pm at Tennessee Tech University in the School of Nursing Auditorium. Make plans now to attend this extremely informative class. Upon completing this class, you'll receive a Skywarn Spotter Certificate and Skywarn Spotter Card.

  • MARCH MADNESS: CoCoRaHS (Community Collaborative Rain Hail and Snow Network) is holding their annual March Madness. This doesn't have anything to do with basketball. It has to do with recruiting. Need to ask a specific question that isn't answered?? E-mail me!

Finally Back Home (Snow!)

We made it back from Louisville, KY just a bit ago.  Went in and out of rain/snow about 9 times.  The cold air chased us all the way back.  Didn't see any accumulation until we got here.  Would call it a dusting.  The heaviest of the snow is quickly moving through our area right now (9:40 pm).

Heard a report of 77 people at the Storm Spotter's Training Class today! AWESOME..having that many folks trained to watch the sky during severe weather is a valuable asset for our community.  Big thanks to all who made it.  Go take your test online and get your ID card.

Warm Valentines Day (Rain Moving Out)

Happy Valentine's Day to all my readers.  I appreciate each of you. It'll be quite nice today with highs in the middle 50's here in the Cookeville area.  Most of the rain has moved on to our east.

Received several very nice comments concerning the newspaper article on the Storm Spotters Class .  Some made wisecracks..but that is ok, too!  Will have an announcement put at the top of the page on the Spotter Class Information through next Saturday.

THIS WEEK IN WEATHER HISTORY
(courtesy of: Bill Murray)
Birth of a Weather Service...
1870: After a deadly season of storms on the Great Lakes in 1868, Professor Increase Lapham of Milwaukee thought something needed to be done.  He believed that a warning system was feasible. He proposed it to Congressman Halbert Paine. A bill was introduced to create a weather observation and warning service, to be operated by the U.S. Army Signal Corps. The bill passed and was signed into law by President Ulysses S. Grant on February 9th, 1870. Twenty-four stations transmitted their first observations by telegraph on November 1, 1870. Civilians hired by the Corps produced the first forecasts. The U.S. National Weather Service was born from this inauspicious beginning!

Local CoCoRaHS Weather Story

Our local newspaper, the Herald-Citizen, ran a story recently about CoCoRaHS. It featured one of our volunteers, Alfred (pictured above), who is doing a GREAT job. I'm thankful for the publicity.

Today, they ran a story from a hydrologist who works for the NWS in Nashville. Hopefully, they'll post it online so that I can link to it.

Spotter Training Classes are coming up. For our area, it will be this coming Saturday, March 29th at the Rescue Squad Building on Carlen Drive in Cookeville. Let the Putnam County Emergency Management Agency know you're coming by calling 931-528-7575.
Excellent post at NashvilleWX.com today about the Red Flag Warning and what it means.
