Storm Naming Controversy

With another hurricane season set to end this Friday, a controversy is brewing over decisions of the National Hurricane Center to designate several borderline systems as tropical storms.

Some meteorologists, including former hurricane center director Neil Frank, say as many as six of this year's 14 named tropical systems might have failed in earlier decades to earn "named storm" status.

November Rainfall

We will finish the month with 5.39", since there is no expectation of rain.

Heavy frost this morning across Tennessee. Temperatures in many locations are in the lower and middle 20's.

The first part of the weekend will be nice with highs in the 60's. By Sunday, however, the rain chances increase with windy conditions. Next week's temperatures looks much below normal.

Cool Thursday, Rain This Weekend

(We are ready for Christmas!)

We'll be significantly cooler today than yesterday. Add in a breeze from the Northwest and it'll feel even cooler. The good news is today will be the coolest day until after the weekend. Speaking of the weekend, rain will develop on Saturday evening and stay around all day on Sunday...some rain on Sunday could be heavy with lightning.

The Fun Weather Fact For This Day for Middle Tennessee: (courtesy of the NWS)
November 29, 1955...Low temperature of 5 degrees sets a monthly record at Crossville.
November 29, 2001...Nashville measures 3.46" of rain.

Looking out over the next two to three weeks, our temperatures are TRENDING below normal. What does that mean, you ask? Well, a series of cold fronts will bring cooler than normal air into our area keeping us (for the most part) below normal. Normal highs and lows for this date are: 55 and 33...look for some very cold days over the next 3 weeks leading into Christmas.

Mid-Week Update

After seeing temperatures rise to near 60 today here on the Plateau, we'll back off a few degrees over the rest of the week. We're still watching a developing system for the weekend, but I'm not as impressed with the possibility for SNOW like I was earlier in the week.

Here's our forecast (Click Here)

On November 28, 1931...An unusual late-season warm spell produces an 88-degree reading at Clarksville. It's the highest mark ever observed there in November.

Postponed Christmas Parade

Our 41st Annual Cookeville Christmas Parade was rained out tonight (Monday) and will be on for Tuesday (tomorrow) evening at the same time...7 pm.

I know it was a tough call for the folks at the Cookeville-Putnam County Chamber of Commerce, but I do believe it was the correct call. It would have been very damp and chilly with the strong NNW winds and some precipitation blowing in during the parade. Tomorrow night will be cold but the weather will be clear. It's going to be a fun time.

We are still watching a developing weather system for later in the week and some possible interesting weather for the weekend. Stay tuned to see what happens.

Here is our local weather forecast link!

The Cookeville Christmas Parade is tonight. Since cold weather is expected, it'll be a great night for a Parade!

Bring On The Rain

Bring on the rain! We can sure use it.

I ran my numbers for the last 6 months and we've measured 16.37" of rain here at my home. 27.08" is the average (for the last 30 years), so we are 60% of normal here in Cookeville.

We've measured 3.85" for the month of November through this morning (3.79" is the norm for the first 25 days of November), so the dry pattern has eased some. With this storm system coming through over the next 24 hours, expectations are for 1-2 more inches of rainfall. November will be the first month we've been AHEAD of normal in quite some time.

The forecast for the Cookeville/Putnam County area of Tennessee can be seen by clicking here.

From Middle TN Weather History, Nashville records a low of 2° on this date in 1950!

Wintery Forecast Tonight!

Things have changed slightly and the NWS has issued the latest forecast with a possibility of sleet in it.

Middle Tennessee Weather Fact of the Day (from the NWS)
On November 24, 1950...
Nashville records greatest one-day snowfall for November, measuring 7.2".

Many people are pointing to the computer model 'GFS' that is hinting at a possible snowstorm for our area. It is way too far out there to discuss at this point.

I Though It Was Cold....

...until I checked out the website of Mt. Washington, NH (home of the world's worst weather). Currently, at 5:55 pm on Friday, it's -5° F. with winds running 60.9 mph, giving them a current wind chill reading of -40° F....you can see their weather forecast by clicking here.

Chilly Black Friday

Our weather here in Cookeville, TN is sunny and chilly with a brisk north wind for Friday after Thanksgiving. This day is known in the retailing world as 'Black Friday' because retailers get a big influx of CASH (shoppers spending it) and it helps to put some in the 'black' (profitable).

Words of ADVICE...quit listening to the Mainstream Media telling you how bleak everything is. On one hand, the conventional wisdom is telling is that retailers expect a sales to increase about 4% over last year....then you hear how bleak it is...the last time I checked, an increase of last year's sales is reason to celebrate!

Enjoy your Christmas shopping season and if you'd like to get me gift, just ask me what I want!!!! :)

Happy Thanksgiving

Today is November 22, 2007....just 39 days to go in this year! A happy thanksgiving day to all. Remember why the Pilgrims were giving thanks today & offer up your own thanks to our Creator.

Current conditions are chilly & wet. Temperature at 6 am (cst) is 43.2°, winds are from the north at around 5-8 mph. .35" in the CoCoRaHS rain bucket since yesterday. We expect a cloudy, cold day with temps falling throughout the day. Snow flurries are OUT of the forecast.

My 13 year-old daughter is running in a 5K (called the Turkey Trot) this morning. Will be an excellent day for a 3.1 mile run! Mommy, me and the baby Mary Katherine will cheer her on!

On This Date in History:
Katherine Sue (Wolf) Detwiler, my grandmother, was born in 1917.
She died February 25, 1976.

In 1929...Five inches of snow fall at Nashville, the most ever measured on this date.

President John Kennedy was assasinated in Dallas in 1963.

Rainy Afternoon

We've measured .22" since the rainfall began this afternoon. It's been falling at a steady rate, however, we should see a break in the rain for while until the next line comes through. Back in Arkansas, this line has packed a punch. Hopefully, it punches itself OUT before arriving into Middle Tennessee.

Click here to check this cool weather tool. Just put in your ZIP CODE or CITY & STATE and check out all the weather information you can get. ENJOY!

Rain Is Near

The leading edge of this first wave of rainfall is nearing our County Line. We should have rain falling in our area in the next 30-45 minutes.

The stronger weather will occur late tonight and early on Thursday.

Forecasting Models In Agreement

Forecasting models are showing that we'll see heavy rains later today. Most areas will receive at least six-tenths or more of rainfall. Some could receive much more. They are also in agreement with cold air spilling into our area during Thanksgiving Day and some locations could see the rain change to snow flurries by late afternoon on Thursay.

Wouldn't that be nice?

Change Can Be Good!

**Latest Update**
8:15 pm on Tuesday night

I've been poring over information for the last hour or so concerning our impending weather situation. It seems we'll see the strongest weather enter our area later on Wednesday into Wednesday night. Right now, heavy rainfall and POSSIBLE severe storms. Obviously, we'll know much more by late morning on Wednesday.

Warm Tuesday and Then BIG Changes!

Could the white stuff be in our forecast??

We'll see 70+° for our high today and that can only mean one thing in November. Change is on the way! Storms come in for our Wednesday and then Thanksgiving Day will be chilly with a possibility of some snow flurries by Thursday night. Friday will be downright COLD with windy conditions.

Severe weather is a possibility on Wednesday. We're in the 15% category according to the SPC.

Here is our forecast. If you like a little variety, you'll love the forecast.

Thanksgiving Week Weather

The explanation for the two maps above is at the bottom of this blog post.

It'll be a short workweek coming up. Just about two and 1/2 days will be about it, then 4 plus days off! Yeee-hawwww! :)

We will be much warmer to start out the week, but will be much colder to end it! Here's a peek at our 7-day forecast. (Click here)

I brought the CoCoRaHS official rain gauge indoors a few days ago. We were quite cold at night (21° officially one evening) and didn't want any moisture to freeze and crack the thing. With warmer temps and, more importantly, rain in the forecast, it's time to get her back out. This gave me a chance to get it nice and cleaned out.

The storm survey is out for two tornadoes that struck very near to my home on November 14th. Here is the link from the National Weather Service. Both were less than 20 miles from me. One to the northwest and one to the southwest. They were both rated at the EF-1 range.

Winter Weather Awareness Week concluded this past week. I was going to attach at .pdf file, but it isn't cooperating. So, I'll just send you to the NWS-Nashville Home Page (click here) and you can print it out. Great information on this publication.

We'll keep an eye out for Severe Weather for Wednesday and Wednesday night. That is a HUGE travel day for lots of people. Wild weather could delay folks, so get a head start!

Snowflakes Flying

Saw my first snowflakes this morning. Was at a client's office (he is in a red brick building) and could see the snow against the background of his building!

WOW..I thought I was imagining things until I viewed the updated forecast.
  • Mostly Cloudy for the rest of the day with a chance of snow flurries in the morning and early afternoon, then partly cloudy later. Highs in the lower and mid 40's and winds 15-25 mph with gusts to 30 mph.

The mountains of East Tennessee are under a snow advisory tonight. Higher elevations (above 2500 ft) could see as much as 4 inches! *Lucky dogs* :)

Tornado Strikes Kimball, TN

A tornado has hit Kimball, TN in Marion County. Kimball is about an hour and a half from my home. At last report, I was hearing about 9 or 10 possible injuries, none serious. My company owns billboards in Marion County.

Fall Colors!

This map (from The Weather Channel) shows our area in 'peak conditions' for Fall Colors. Took a 'peek' outside my home to offer up some fall colors here. It's only a few pictures, but hey, we've got a 1-month old, so my priorities are her right now! ;)
Nice mum photo from our front porch.
The above picture is from our neighbor's front yard.

Our weather forecast is for mostly dry conditions with the exception of Tuesday and Wednesday where showers are in our seven day.

Cold Mornings Continue

Another frosty, chilly morning here in the Upper Cumberland! For the second straight morning, we are in the 20's to start our day. Temperatures, however, will moderate some as we've seen our last morning below freezing for the next several days. Highs will be mainly near 60 during the forecast period.

Do you wish you knew how much rain you got? Don't wish anymore, now you can know. We continue to recruit more folks here in Tennessee for the CoCoRaHS program. Click here for more information

Freeze Warning Tonight

(Graphic courtesy of NashvilleWX.com)

Statement as of 3:29 PM CST on November 06, 2007

.. Freeze warning remains in effect from midnight tonight to 7 amCST Wednesday...

Freeze watch remains in effect from late Wednesday nightthrough Thursday morning...

A freeze warning remains in effect from midnight tonight to 7 am CST Wednesday. A freeze watch remains in effect from late Wednesday night through Thursday morning. Cold air settling on the area the next couple of days will drop morning low temperatures below freezing. Temperatures Wednesdayand Thursday mornings will likely range from the mid 20s to around30. A freeze warning means sub-freezing temperatures are imminent or highly likely. These conditions will kill crops and othersensitive vegetation. A freeze watch means sub-freezing temperatures are possible.

Our 7-day forecast is promising warmer weather. It's hard to believe that I consider upper 50's and lower 60's as 'warmer weather'...Autumn has definitely arrived. I will TRY to get some great fall color pictures. Several trees near my home are brilliant.

The latest drought monitor for our area has Putnam County in the Extreme Drought stage. It is called a category D3. The only worse category is D4 Drought that is called Exceptional. You can view this information and much more by clicking here.

Speaking of the lack of rain, we measured .73 from last evening's storms. I checked CoCoRaHS site for Tennessee and thirteen stations in and around Nashville reported 1.50" or more. In my own county, we had a range from .61 up to 1.26" of rain. You can see these rainfall totals by going here and plug in whatever date you like and/or whatever county you want.

Strong Weather In Tennessee

(Photo is courtesy of News 2 in Nashville and James Pellegrino)
A line of severe storms crossed through Tennessee on Monday evening. A tornado (via doppler radar) was reported near Nashville during the 5 pm rush hour. The National Weather Service had a spotter report a 75 mph wind gust around 5:15 tonight. Behind those line of storms, winds have turned to the north and continued to be gusty.

Our weather for Tuesday will be quite different than on Monday. We saw highs reach the 70's on Monday after morning lows in the 30's, however, we'll struggle to see highs touch 50 on Tuesday. A hard freeze is expected on Tuesday night.

I've analyzed our October weather numbers and here is what we had:
2.24" of rain (just 8 days of measurable rain)
87° was our high on 10-08
36° was our low on 10-29 and 10-30
30 mph wind gust on 10-18

Bundle Up!

Here comes the cool weather for Middle Tennessee! Tonight's lows will go down around 40 by daybreak. Friday's highs will reach into the 60's, BUT, Football Friday night will see low temps in the 30's by sunrise on Saturday.

Hurricane Noel will ride up the Eastern seaboard this weekend and should still be a full-fledged hurricane when it hits Canada.

We get an extra hour of sleep on Saturday night and this sleep-deprived father will take it!

No weekend plans in my household. I'll try and catch up on the Weather Blogging and also on the baby blog!
