WINTER RETURNS WITH DECEMBER: As I study the forecasting models, it appears winter will make a strong case by the middle of the week. A powerful cold front will turn rain into snow on Wednesday night and Thursday will be a raw, cold day with snow and rain mixture. It is still a few days away, so we will continue to watch this developing situation. As always, I'll keep you informed on the latest.
COLD AND RAINY MONDAY: Rain continues today early and it'll be chilly with highs struggling to reach 50°. Skies clear out tonight with a low in the lower 30's. Tuesday will be a sunny, warm day with highs around 57° and then the change comes with rain developing Tuesday night continuing on Wednesday. We won't see highs anywhere near 50° again until at least the weekend.

Warm Wednesday, Cold Thanksgiving
SUNNY WEDNESDAY: Sunshine for your Thanksgiving-Eve here in Cookeville. We had a few sprinkles overnight that resulted in .02" in the CoCoRaHS professional 4" rain gauge. Expect highs to reach around 56° today with the sunny skies. Some other sections of Tennessee, around Nashville, will climb over 60°. On Thanksgiving, you'll need to dress warmly as a cold front brings some sprinkles and strong west winds. Highs only in the upper 40's with lows tomorrow night in the lower 30's. We can't rule out a changeover to snow late Thursday/early Friday. Speaking of Friday, if you're shopping you'll need to dress warmly as we expect a chilly start with some flurries flying. Eventually, we'll clear out and high the upper 40's by Friday afternoon!

Thanksgiving Day Forecast Update
TUESDAY OUTLOOK: Before we get to the much-anticipated Thanksgiving Day updated weather forecast, let's look at the Tuesday outlook. Chilly Day Ahead
WEDNESDAY WEATHER: Cool, damp day ahead for your Wednesday as highs will struggle to reach the lower 50's under a cloudy sky. There is a chance for light showers today. We start this morning in the lower 40's across most of the region. Patchy low fog is giving folks some trouble especially near bodies of water such as rivers, lakes, etc. The fog should dissipate by 9 a.m. Take a warm jacket with you today as temperatures will feel a bit on the chilly side.
THE LOOK AHEAD: We should finally clear out on Thursday with highs reaching the upper 50's for most of us. Friday and Saturday will be mostly sunny with highs around 60° with rain returning for Sunday. Thanksgiving week appears (at this point) to be a bit on the chilly side across Tennessee. More on that in the next few days.

One More Nice Day
ONE MORE SUNSHINE-FILLED DAY: Expect today to be quite nice after a chilly start (lower and mid 40's) this morning. Highs under partly sunny skies will be in the upper 60's. Beyond today, the changes are coming. Rain enters the forecast for tonight, tomorrow, and Wednesday. High temperatures will be much cooler than what we've experienced over the last several days!
*Weather History for This Date*
On November 16 in history ..courtesy of: The Weather Company
1958 - Tuscon, Arizona records 6.4 inches of snow.
1959 - In the middle of the most severe November cold wave in history, Lincoln MT reached 53 degrees below zero, which established an all-time record low temperature for the nation for the month of November. The high for the day was one degree above zero.
1987 - A blizzard across eastern Colorado drops 37 inches at Echo Lake and causes wind of 68 mph at Pueblo.
1989 - Continuation of previous day's severe weather outbreak produced 22 tornadoes from Virginia to New York State. At 12:05pm, a straight-line wind gust blew down the cafeteria wall at the East Oldenham Elementary School near Newburg NY. 9 students were killed. A lady was killed in Manhattan when an I-beam was blown from a 21 story building.
1999 - Hurricane warnings were in effect as late-season Hurricane Lenny was threatening Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Lenny was a Category 3 hurricane with top winds of 115 mph. Lenny was not only unusual because of its late-season strength, but because of its forward movement. Lenny was moving from west to east across the Caribbean. Lenny was the first hurrincane in recorded history to threaten Puerto Rico from the west, as most storms move east to west across the Caribbean. The unusual motion meant that some harbors normally protected from hurricanes were threatened.
1999 - The calendar said November, but you couldn't tell it by the temperature readings over the western United States. More record highs were set across the west, including 89 in Phoenix, 74 in Provo UT and 70 in Cheyenne WY.

Rain Chances Possible
IDA EFFECTS: We will be on the far, western edge of the rainfall associated with what was Hurricane Ida. She came ashore early this morning around Mobile Bay, Alabama as a Tropical Storm. She will track northeasterly and dump heavy amounts of rain across Alabama, parts of Georgia, and from the upper Cumberland Plateau of Tennessee eastward to the Carolinas today.
HERE IN COOKEVILLE: We've received just .02" of rain at my 7 a.m. observation. It is the first time since November 1st (actually early morning of 10/31) that rain has fallen in Cookeville. I expect we'll see some showers today, but most of the heavy stuff will go to our east. Be careful if you have travel plans to Knoxville or Chattanooga today. Expect a sunshine-filled week from Veteran's Day (Wednesday) all the way through the weekend with seasonal temperatures.
Weather History for This Date
On November 10, 2002...
Middle Tennessee suffers one of its worst autumn severe weather outbreaks ever. Four tornadoes strike the Highland Rim during the early morning, with 2 fatalities in Port Royal. Then, following record high temperatures at Nashville (81) and Crossville (75), severe weather re-ignites during the late afternoon, with widespread wind damage, hail, and 8 additional tornadoes. Lake Tansi Village, south of Crossville, is hardest hit, as a supercell produces baseball-size hail and an F3 tornado, killing 4. Two additional fatalities occur at New Union (Coffee County) as the result of two F2 tornadoes there. In addition to the 8 fatalities, 51 injuries are reported across the area. This is the 7th largest tornado outbreak in mid state history.

Fantastic Weekend Ahead
We begin Friday with very chilly temperatures. The day, however, will warm quickly and we expect to be around 65° by this afternoon under sunny skies. Saturday's high will be in the mid and upper 60's and we may even hit 70° on Sunday. No rain is expected this weekend. The next chances of rain will occur Monday or Monday night.
I have a great opportunity this weekend to go see the Nashville office of the National Weather Service. At first, my 15 year-old wasn't thrilled about going. The more we discussed it, the more excited she is about going to tour the facility. It is located in Wilson County near Old Hickory Lake.

2009-2010 Winter Outlook
Many of you have asked about this winter. I've done the research from looking at the past years to looking at many maps, looking the expert's predictions, and other mountains of information. It is an educated guess at best. At worst, it is just a wild guess. Based on the precipitation trend and the temperature trend, I expect we, in Middle Tennessee are in for a colder than normal winter and a wetter than normal winter.
This information will make many of you jump for joy. Let's look at some information below. Most 3-month outlooks being released right now point toward below average winter temperatures for the entire Southeastern United States. While the first couple of weeks of December look normal, the rest of winter looks quite cold. Secondly, the Climate Prediction Center predicts winter precipitation will be below normal. This doesn't jive with the last 12-month trend where we've been wetter than ever (since records have been kept going back to 1914).
Let's look at some maps. The first set is courtesy of the web site, SNOW DAY.
The second set is courtesy of the CLIMATE PREDICTION CENTER. They came out with their Winter Outlook and it can be viewed by going here.
What would I take from these two sets of maps? First, I would note that both agree upon a colder than normal winter in Tennessee. Second, I would be concerned about our wet pattern over the last 12 months. Without a shift in the pattern, we will continue with above average precipitation. That combined with below average temperatures portend a snowy winter.
I've given you my thoughts. What are yours?

Sunny Sunday
**PLENTY OF SUN TODAY**
We'll have a sun-filled Sunday after a very cool start this morning. Some locations are dealing with plenty of fog, which is reducing visibilities. The fog should burn off by 9 am. The rest of the day will be nice with highs in the upper 50's in the Cookeville area.
**CLOCKS AND BATTERIES**
Did you remember to set your clock back one hour? Also, this is a good time to change your batteries in your smoke detector. Along with that, change them in your carbon monoxide detector, should you live in a home heated by gas.
**OCTOBER'S RAIN**
We ended October with 7.40" of rain. It ranks as the 5th most ever recorded in Cookeville. Also, we stand at 69.08" for 2009 and if the ended today, we would have had the 6th rainiest year in Cookeville's history. November averages 4.29" of rain while December's average is 5.24". Should we just hit the average amounts, 2009 will go down as Cookeville's wettest ever.
