Dense Fog Advisory This Morning

If you're just waking up this morning, notice how thick the fog is in certain areas (see above photo).

There is a Dense Fog Advisory for all of middle Tennessee this morning. The fog is expected to hang around through the 8 o'clock hour for many of us and even later for others.Visibilities are down to less than 1/4 mile. Slow down if you run into foggy areas. Be sure to have your low-beam lights on.

Strong storms are possible coming up for Thursday and Thursday night with the most likely events being heavy rains, damaging winds, and large hail.

For today, sunny after the fog lifts with a 10% chance of rainfall after 5 pm and the high will be 86°.

Seattle Saturday

If you've never been to Seattle, just look outdoors today in Cookeville, TN and you'll get a good taste of their weather with fog, dampness, and chilly. It'll be mostly cloudy for the rest of today and we'll not see temperatures rise much from the current reading of 39.9°.

We'll see a warmer Sunday with a high of 60° and then storm chances ramp up again on Sunday night with a possibility of strong to severe chances once again. Here is a map of potential severe weather from the NashvilleWx.com site.

Speaking of strong weather, we saw hail reports from Sumner County and Giles County. Reports tell us they were near 1" in diameter. *January 21st, 2012 Storm Reports Link*

Looking further out into next week, temperatures should be above average for this time of year. Snow fans will not be happy!

TODAY'S FORECAST:
The fog will burn off later this morning and we'll go all the way up to 75° today under sunny skies!

Fogged In (Near Zero Visibility)

(view from Cookeville Webcam)

Got off the phone a few moments ago with my father.  He is picking up his grandson (my nephew) in Monterey, TN from a four-wheeler expedition.  He reports very foggy conditions with visibility around 60 feet.  In his words, "about 3 car lengths"....

Here is Cookeville, our visibility is a quarter mile near my home and rain is beginning to fall.  I put a shot up from a few minutes ago courtesy of the Cookeville Webcam.  It is commonly called the 'Spotter Cam' and is brought to us by the Cookeville/Putnam County Emergency Operations Center.

Post #1000 Today (Big Changes Ahead Again)

Waking up to fog this morning and a Dense Fog Advisory for much of Middle TN through 9 o'clock this morning.  Visibility could be reduced to as little as 1/8 of a mile.  Drive safely and slow down.

THE WEATHER AHEAD
Highs today near 53° with a chance for rain.  Temperatures fall only slightly tonight, but then rise as we head into Friday.  There is a chance for thunderstorms.  BIG CHANGES are on the way for the weekend as a strong cold front moves in on Saturday and drops temperatures quickly.  Snow chances on Saturday night and Sunday.  Highs Monday struggle to reach freezing.

CHRISTMAS WEATHER
Continuing to check modeling for the Christmas Eve/Christmas Day weather and will discuss this further over the next few days!

THOUGHTS ABOUT THIS SITE
When this weather blog was started nearly two years ago, I didn't have any thoughts of just where it would go.  But here we are 1000 posts & more than 40,000 visitors later having the best month (viewers wise) ever.  To think that people like USA TODAY, Reuters, and Chicago Sun-Times would pick up my work never crossed my mind.  To all of you who've told me countless times how much you enjoy reading this, a HUGE THANK-YOU!   To all the people I've 'met' from e-mail, comments, and other weather websites, you all have inspired me with your work and (mostly) positive feedback!  I will continue trying to bring the best weather information possible.

Foggy Morning! (Ike Update) (Church)

Good morning!  It is the 50's this morning around the Cookeville area.  We are at 58° and thick fog is affecting much of Middle Tennessee.  Latest shot from our webcam in downtown Cookeville.

We'll see clearing by 9:30 this morning and our forecast calls for highs to reach in the middle 80's.

Moving on to Hurricane Ike...at 7 am CDT, he has winds of 135 mph (Category 4) with gusts to 160 mph and is moving to the west at 14 mph.  The lowest barometer reading was 28.01"...whereas here at home this morning, we have 30.18"...Ike is forecasted (as you see below) to move into the Gulf of Mexico.  Much, much more information at Wunderground Tropical and the NHC.

Speaking of tropical storms, I was checking CoCoRaHS rainfall totals across the country this morning where Tropical Storm Hannah raced up the east coast and found one location in Virginia (Prince William County) that recorded 9.14" in the last 24 hours!   There are many locations in that area that received over 5".

I'm headed to church this morning.  Have camera duties for the internet and TV.  You can watch the services (first one at 8:30 am CDT & second at 10:30 am CDT) on the web by going to our website for Trinity Assembly of God in Algood, TN.

Dense Fog Tonight

A Dense Fog Advisory is in effect from Midnight through 9 a.m. on Sunday.

The perfect combination of moisture in the low-levels, clearing skies later, and very light winds will cause fog to form overnight. This will create dangerous driving conditions as we head toward the morning hours just before daybreak.

Visibilities will be reduced to less than a quarter mile.

Drying Out This Weekend...

Rainfall has ceased across the midstate and we'll slowly begin the process of drying out. We've got patchy fog here on the Cumberland Plateau. Cookeville webcam showing fog and mist. Clouds will be stubborn and will hang around most of the day. Temperatures will struggle to get in the middle 50's. After today though, Sunday will be gorgeous will sunshine and highs reaching 70.

**Meteorological Spring**
Meteorological Spring is defined as March 1st onward. Checking our rainfall, we've received 8.60 inches of rain since 3-1 while the average rainfall for March 1st through today is 6.26. This represents an overage of 2.74 inches or 37% above normal. Hope this trend continues for the rest of the year!

**BLOG UPDATE**
I've updated the weather blog to include a live storm warnings along with latest weather news. You'll see both these new features just to the right below our live weather station. If you scroll toward the bottom, you'll see charts from my personal weather station. I am looking to put a graphic on the site with the NWS forecast, so if you know of one...let me know

Frost and Snow (on Christmas?)

Interesting phenomenon today when I woke up...saw FROST on the rooftops, yet we have none on the ground. It almost looked like SNOW had fallen...what do you all make of that?

The GFS (Global Forecasting System) computer model puts snow in our forecast for here in Cookeville, TN for Christmas. Am I a believer of it just yet? No...I'm excited about the prospects, but not quite ready to say "it is going to happen"...that being said, we'll watch the latest model runs coming out later this morning and follow up with our thoughts.

You can see OUR LATEST FORECAST by clicking on the first link just to the right of this post. Also, there are weather links to several other sites that have experts who are way smarter than me!

I'll check back in later in the day.

Rain, Fog, and Other Fun Stuff

Downtown picture of Cookeville, TN this morning. Where are the buildings? Shrouded in fog!

We received .22 inches of rain since yesterday. Went almost 2 weeks without a drop.

The fog has socked us in this morning. Visibility is near zero in many places.

Our forecast has us in the 70's today and in the 40's tonight! WOW!

On this date in Middle TN Weather History from 1906, Nashville gets 2.60" of rainfall. We haven't received that much for the entire month this year.

More activity going on in the Gulf and Atlantic. Run over to the National Hurricane Center site to check it out!

Finally, my TTU Golden Eagles beat UT-Martin last night 13-10. It was a big win for Watson Brown's program here at TTU. We're now 4 and 1 on the season!

August Fog=Winter Snow??

Interesting post over at NashvilleWX.com (the Weather Blog for the ABC affiliate in Nashville, TN) about Folklore Forecasting. You can click on the link and read all about how some folks believe the number of fogs we get here in August will determine the number of snows we can expect during the upcoming winter season.

We will chart it (using a chart they've provided) and see if it holds true. My personal opinion is 'no way', but hey, it's worth charting and having fun with it. Some believe the wooly worm holds some answers to the snow mystery also...but that is a story for another day!

Oh, and it was BONE DRY here in my area today. Very few locations in Tennessee received rainfall. Yesterday, we have rainfall rates vary from 0.00 up to 0.98 from the seven reporting stations in my county. Today, however, we'll not have any stations in our county report rain.

Across our entire state, not quite 100 of the 212 stations reporting show from a trace amount up to 3.30 inches (from Murfreesboro...which is S.E. of Nashville in Middle TN). *this information courtesy of cocorahs*
