Clouds Hang On...
Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry
Nice Sunday (Snow Mon-Wed)
THE WEEK AHEAD: Monday is expected to be cloudy with a chance of snow moving in on Monday night after midnight. A rain/snow mix for Tuesday and all snow Tuesday night lingering into Wednesday. Expect below normal temperatures (same old story) for the beginning of March. We do, however, see warmer weather by next weekend.

Daily Weather Story
The tsunami warning issued for the Hawaiian Islands turned out to be a non-event. What could have been a terrible disaster was avoided. Even with great science, things like tidal wave activity and weather are both still very hard to predict.

Super Saturday Weather (Tsunami Warning-Hawaii)
AT LEAST FOR A WHILE: Expect sunshine for the first half of Saturday with temps warming to around 43°. A northwest wind will make things feel a bit cold. Look for more clouds by afternoon and a slight chance for flurries. By this evening, a better chance for snow flurries and snow showers with lows in the mid 20's. Less than a half-inch of accumulation expected. Speaking of winter weather, today's Examiner post discusses this crazy winter of 2009-2010! *Hint* - Coldest in more than 30 years!! Check it out.
Daily Weather Story
Tsunami Warning for Hawaii after a massive earthquake (measuring 8.8 on Richter Scale) has struck Chile. The 50th state of the United States is planning on sounding warning sirens at 6 a.m. (Hawaiian time) to awake residents and visitors to give them updates on the warning. Estimated arrival time to the Hawaiian Islands is around 11:19 am HST. As I understand it, a tsunami was generated by the quake and this is a dangerous situation.

Waking Up To Morning Snow
Putnam County Schools are now closed...what a nightmare for the administration, but a great call to close them. Again, no child, parent, teacher or bus driver is worth endangering.
**8:00 AM UPDATE**
SEVERE WEATHER AWARENESS WEEK: Continues across Tennessee. Today, we focus on Severe Thunderstorms. There is an excellent article at Examiner that contains safety tips and the differences between a Severe Thunderstorm Watch and Severe Thunderstorm Warning.
SNOW ONCE AGAIN: We awake to morning snow here in Cookeville, TN. Nearly 1/2" of accumulation and schools will be running 2 hours late across much of the Upper Cumberland. We have a Winter Weather Advisory in effect. It's cold (24.1° at just before 7 a.m.) with highs only expected to be in the mid 30's today. The snow will likely taper off by lunch. Don't expect much more to accumulate. Roads, for the most part, are in fairly good shape. Watch out on bridges and overpasses. We have a sunny weekend ahead with chilly temperatures. See the forecast below.
My Weather Station LIVE: At the top of my web site is 'My Weather Station Live'. It is now running off my Davis Vantage Vue. I hooked up the Vue to my computer last evening. It is one of the most accurate systems on the market today. The updates will occur every 2.5 seconds. You can see all the information over at Wunderground, along with several other web sites. I will post those later. Enjoy!

Return To Cold
FANTASTIC WEEKEND: One of the nicer weekends we've seen in quite some time! We saw 60° on Saturday and Sunday's high of 67° at 3:23 pm was the warmest day since November 9th. It will be a distant memory this week as daytime highs after today will not see the average (51°) for this time of year until Sunday. We may, and I stress the word may, see some snow flurries flying Monday night into Tuesday. More cold air drops in on Wednesday and lows that night will be around 20° by Thursday morning.
WHAT TO EXPECT: Slight chance of rain for today after a rain-filled overnight. Cooler with highs only around 50°. Temperatures fall rapidly overnight, low 29° with flurries. Flurries again on Tuesday morning and we'll fight to hit 41°. The rest of the week will be COLD with flurries on Tuesday night and Wednesday!
Weather History for This Date
1874 - Nashville records 2.58" and 5.36" over a 2-day period
Daily Weather Story
The return of the cold air is the big story. After being teased with highs of 51° on Friday, 60° on Saturday, and 67° on Sunday, we'll take a big thud back to reality as Tuesday through Saturday will be below normal once again. While we'll see a few flurries, I don't see (at this point) an accumulating snow to talk about.

One Last Warm Day
NICE SUNDAY AHEAD: If you like warmth without rain, you will LOVE today. Highs are expected to reach 60° once again (saw 60° as our high Saturday). The last time we saw temperatures this warm was on December 14th! The last time we saw two days in a row above 60° was November 28th and 29th. A run of nearly 90 days.
BACK TO REALITY: After Sunday's warm temperatures, we'll see rain overnight. A cool and rainy Monday. With frontal passage on Monday, temperatures drop to below normal and stay there for a while. Some snow is not out of the question! The great news is, while it'll be very cold Tuesday night, the cold weather is not as deep or last as long as the cold air earlier this month. We will see a very active pattern into the first week of March. If we get the right combination of cold air and precip, another accumulating snow would be very possible.
Weather History for This Date
February 21, 1929 - Nashville receives 8" of snow for a two-day total of 15". The snow occurs over a 13 hour period!
Daily Weather Story
Warm weather is the big story. As I said in the opening paragraph above, it has been quite a while since we've seen temperatures this warm!

Snow Chances Are Back
Say a prayer for us......
Daily Weather Story: The big news other than our new baby son is the southern snowstorm. Dallas has received it's greatest one-day snowfall in recorded history as more than 9" has fallen in the Metroplex. Areas like south Mississippi, southern Louisiana, and south Alabama will see major accumulations on Friday. Snow will even accumulate in the panhandle of Florida.
CRAZY STATS:
- All 50 states have some sort of snow on the ground as of today.
- Montgomery, Alabama's greatest snowfall ever occurred March 13, 1993 with 3.8". This record will probably fall on Friday.
- Dallas, Oklahoma City, Philly, Baltimore, and DC are just a few cities that have set some snowfall records this season.
WEEKEND FORECAST: Snow is in the forecast over the next few days. I think it'll be possible through Monday or even Tuesday. Expect temperatures to remain cold throughout the period. Daytime highs will not climb out of the 30's through Sunday and will be even colder on President's Day as a reinforcing shot of Arctic air is pushed into Middle Tennessee. Look for our best chance for accumulating snow to be on Sunday. Up to 3" is possible across the Upper Cumberland.

THE FIRST PERIOD OF SNOW IS FORECAST FOR THE EXTREME SOUTHERN AREAS
...NEAR THE ALABAMA BORDER...LATE TONIGHT AND FRIDAY...AS A LOW
PRESSURE SYSTEM MOVES EAST ACROSS THE GULF OF MEXICO TO OFF THE

BETWEEN 30 AND 34 DEGREES...WHICH COULD RESULT IN UP TO A HALF

GRASSY AREAS. ONLY SNOW FLURRIES ARE EXPECTED FURTHER NORTH TOWARD
NASHVILLE.
THE NEXT PERIOD OF SNOW OCCURS FRIDAY NIGHT INTO SATURDAY

BOOT HEEL. UP TO HALF AN INCH OF SNOW IS POSSIBLE NORTH OF
INTERSTATE 40...ESPECIALLY ALONG THE NORTHERN CUMBERLAND PLATEAU.

Falling Tuesday Temperatures
For today, expect rain becoming mixed with snow this afternoon and all snow this evening. Total accumulations should be less than 1 inch by Wednesday morning. It'll be chilly today with a brisk wind from the south becoming westerly later today. Winds increase tonight and turn more northwesterly with lows in the lower 20's. We may see some slippery road conditions develop overnight. For Wednesday, COLD and windy with a high of only 30°
Weather History for This Date

Snow Back To Rain Later
Winter Weather Advisory is cancelled as snow has turned back to rain...
Warming temperatures overnight turn the large snowflakes into rain. Expect slightly rising temperatures over the next few hours in the Upper Cumberland. Areas back to our west have seen bursts of snow which have resulted in accumulations up to 2" this evening. Tuesday's weather promises to be a mixed back of rain, snow, cold temperatures and gusty winds with light, if any, snow accumulations. Those winds will make the 'feels like' or wind chill temperatures downright chilly. By Tuesday night, I expect a complete changeover to snow. The snow will be light and may result in an inch of accumulation.

Cold Week Ahead With Precipitation
Winter Storm Warnings are in effect for counties west and north of Nashville for tonight thru tomorrow. Snow has fallen across North Mississippi and North Alabama. Quite a nice surprise for those folks. I'm not excited about our chance for accumulating snow here in Cookeville area over next couple of days. Will watch and keep you advised.
PUTNAM COUNTY SCHOOLS
2 hours late
Monday - February 8, 2010
Our friends over in the Memphis area are dealing with a WINTER STORM WARNING through tonight. The corridor between Jonesboro, AR to Memphis to Jackson, TN could see from 6-9" of snow through this evening. One suburb of Memphis (Cordova) is already reporting 4.5" as of 8:00 am. Map below...
Winter Weather Advisories are now being posted for Middle TN (NOT including the Cookeville/Putnam County area) for later today and tonight as accumulating snow is expected. At this point, we will be too warm for that to be a possibility.
Sunday's Strange Temperatures: After an original prediction of 40° for a high, we saw skies stay cloudy all day long. Temperatures never moved much.
Midnight on Sunday morning, it was 27.6°,
6 am 27.0°
9 am 28.0°
Noon 29.0°
3 pm 29.0°
6 pm 28.6°
9 pm 28.3°
Midnight 24.0°
Rare indeed to see a 2° change during most of a day.
WEEK'S OUTLOOK: Expect the nicest day to be today with increasing clouds through the day and a high of 42° after a very cold morning start. Rain enters our picture tonight and Tuesday. Lows tonight around 35° and that will probably be the high on Tuesday as temperatures fall all day.
This is a very tricky forecast. We should begin to see a rain/snow mix on Tuesday afternoon becoming all snow on Tuesday night and lingering flurries by Wednesday. Tuesday night will be cold and we may see enough for roads to become hazardous. We will watch things closely. The rest of the week will be cold with another snow chance by Friday.
Also, there is a new Cookeville web camera and weather station installed by the folks at NewsChannel 5. This was announced on their Sunday late newscast. It is at Tennessee Tech University and shows a GREAT shot of Derryberry Hall. Check their web site and it isn't (yet) online. Hopefully, it will be soon. I'll make contact with one of their people and let all of you know.
