Updated Special Weather Statement

Special Weather Statement
Statement as of 5:04 PM CST on December 31, 2010

....Thunderstorms...a few possibly severe...will push across the
mid state tonight...
...Heavy rainfall is likely...

Early this evening...showers and thunderstorms were rapidly
developing across northern parts of Mississippi and Alabama...
and moving north northeastward at 45 mph. Meanwhile...a squall
line...was near the Mississippi River and pushing east at 15 mph.

As thunderstorms move into the mid state tonight...a few could
become severe... and anyone planning to celebrate the incoming
New Year will want to keep a check on the weather conditions...in
the event that any severe weather watches or warnings are issued.

The main threat from storms tonight will be damaging straight line
winds. However...a few isolated tornadoes are also possible...especially
over western parts of the mid state...generally between Interstate
65 and the Tennessee River.

The showers storms will also produce heavy downpours...and those
celebrating the New Year...and planning to be out on the
Highway...should expect to encounter areas of standing water...
and localized minor flooding...especially in metropolitan areas
like Nashville.

Weather Statement

From National Weather Service...

Special Weather Statement
Statement as of 7:26 AM CST on December 31, 2010

....Heavy rain possible late tonight and Saturday...

A cold front will bring a chance for heavy rainfall to middle
Tennessee late tonight and Saturday. Look for showers to break
out during the afternoon with a band of showers and thunderstorms
developing during the evening over western areas of the mid state
and spreading east. Showers and thunderstorms will become more
widespread after midnight with the heaviest rainfall expected
across southern and eastern areas of the mid state including the
plateau. Rainfall amounts of one to two inches are possible with
locally up to three inches by noon Saturday. Middle Tennessee is
currently in a rainfall deficit for the month ranging from two and
a half to three inches...but runoff from heavy rains can fill
creeks and streams quickly leading to flash flooding.

In addition to the heavy rain potential...there is also the
threat of severe storms with damaging winds mainly in western
middle Tennessee tonight.

Residents across the mid state are urged to remain updated with the
latest forecast information. Keep NOAA Weather Radio nearby tonight
and in the alert Mode.

Sleet being reported across the Cookeville and Putnam County area. Much of this will probably change to rain for a period and then transition over to a wintry mix and finally to all snow later tonight.

The forecast amount for your location can be found by consulting the graphic above. (Thanks to NWS-Nashville). Temperatures are expected to hover just below freezing over night (low 28°) and climb to right at freezing for Christmas Day. Roads may become slick and hazardous overnight, but should be mainly wet during the late morning/afternoon hours on Christmas. With additional snow, Christmas night we may see tough travel conditions again. Snow expected to continue on Sunday, high just 28°.

Significant Snow Accumulations Possible Christmas Eve and Day

Major winter setting up for Friday night & Saturday.
------
Special Weather Statement
Statement as of 6:30 AM CST on December 22, 2010

....Potential exists for first measurable snowfall on Christmas in
17 years...

A major storm system currently in the southwestern states will
move into the southeastern states this weekend. As the system
approaches the southeastern states...it looks to be a combination
of surface low pressure along the Gulf and an upper disturbance
over the Midwest.

Moisture will be drawn north ahead of the coastal low and cold air
will sink south with the upper disturbance. A mix of snow...sleet
and rain is possible Friday night...with snow likely Saturday.
At this time...one to four inches of snow is possible.

Since this event is several days away...and the system is uncertainty
remains with the eventual track of the storm system and snow
amounts.

There have been only nine christmases with measurable amounts of
snow since snowfall record keeping began in Nashville back in the
winter of 1884 and 1885. The last time measurable snow fell on
Christmas day in Nashville was in 1993 when three tenths of an
inch was measured. Trace amounts of snow fell on Christmas in
2002. Statistically there is only a 7 percent chance of measurable
snow on any given Christmas. The most snow ever to fall on
Christmas in Nashville is 2.7 inches in 1969.

Snow Chances Christmas Eve & Day

Special Weather Statement
Statement as of 10:54 AM CST on December 21, 2010

....Potential exists for first measurable snowfall on Christmas in

winter of 1884 and 1885. The last time measurable snow fell on

A major storm system is currently over the southwestern United States
and will move across the southern rockies on Thursday and into the
Southern Plains Thursday night. During the day Friday the system
will move from East Texas into Louisiana...spreading wintry precipitation
across the middle Mississippi Valley with rain across the lower
Mississippi Valley. As the surface system moves northeast into
Alabama and north Georgia Christmas eve night...colder air gets
drawn in behind the surface system...with snow is expected to
develop across middle Tennessee Christmas eve and continue into
Christmas day. Climatologically...this is a favored track for snow
in middle Tennessee...but since this event is several days
away...uncertainty still remains in the eventual track of the
storm system and snow amounts.

One Warm Day

After a threat of freezing rain overnight, temperatures have risen quickly here in the Cookeville area. (It is 51.0° at 8:15 am) All of the snow has disappeared due to the rain and warmer temps.

We saw freezing rain develop at 9:00 pm last evening and many locations around us (Monterey, Crossville, and Spencer) all had very dangerous conditions. Since midnight here in Cookeville, we rose from 37° all the way up to our current 51° reading. The rest of the day is expected to be cloudy with rain showers.

We do see a cold front swinging back through the Upper Cumberland and a chance of freezing rain returns for tonight. Low of 27°. Also, today will be the last warm day for a while as the 7-day forecast reveals highs only in the 40's.

Special Weather Statement

Tired of winter weather yet? I hope not as more is on the way. Statement from NWS below.

Special Weather Statement
Statement as of 10:32 AM CST on December 13, 2010

....More wintry weather possible mid week...

Low pressure will develop over the Southern Plains and track east toward Tennessee on Wednesday.

Moisture will be drawn northward ahead of the low beginning Tuesday night...and with very cold air in place across the mid-state another round of wintry precipitation
is expected.

The precipitation is expected to begin as areas of light snow late
Tuesday night or early Wednesday.

As warmer air moves in aloft any snow will gradually change over to freezing rain during the day
Wednesday. The potential for freezing rain will continue into the evening hours Wednesday before warmer air works in changing the precipitation to all rain by late Wednesday night.

The best chance for significant accumulations of snow and ice will be to the north and east of Nashville where cold air will linger the longest.

Regardless...hazardous travel conditions will be
possible throughout the midstate beginning late Tuesday night.

We've seen more snow than was originally forecast. As of 10:30 pm, I'd measured 6" in my yard. Hearing of amounts even higher in Crossville and even right here in Cookeville. Current temp at 1:10 am is 16° with a wind-chill value of 7°.

As we move toward daybreak, expect more snow to fall. I'll have measurements around the 7 am (CDT) hour. Roads are treacherous and travel is not recommended.

We are watching yet another storm system moving our way for Wednesday. Before we get there, however, expect very cold weather. Highs Monday only in the lower 20's and lows Monday night around 6°. School kids can forget going on Tuesday and possibly Wednesday.

....Winter Storm Warning in effect from 4 am Sunday to 6 am CST
Monday...

The National Weather Service in Nashville has issued a Winter
Storm Warning for snowfall accumulation...which is in effect from 4
am Sunday to 6 am CST Monday.

* Location: the Winter Storm Warning is in effect for that portion
of middle TN generally along and northeast of a
Celina...Gainesboro...Sparta...to Crossville line.

* Timing: rain will change to snow around midnight with generally
light accumulations expected overnight. There will be a break
in the precipitation late Saturday night...but more snowfall
will return on Sunday along with frigid and blustery conditions.
The snow will diminish Sunday evening.

* Accumulations: 2 to 4 inches of snow is expected by Monday
morning.

* Impacts: slick Road conditions will develop late Saturday night
as temperatures plummet into the 20s. Periods of snow through
the day on Sunday and into Sunday night will cause very
dangerous travel conditions as roadways become snow covered.
Some roadways may even become impassable by late Sunday night.
This makes for an especially dangerous situation as wind chill
values will dropping to as low as zero degrees.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Winter Storm Warning means significant amounts of snow...
sleet...and ice are expected or occurring. Strong winds are also
possible. This will make travel very hazardous or impossible.

Weekend Snowstorm...

Special Weather Statement
Statement as of 12:15 PM CST on December 10, 2010

....Winter weather likely late Saturday night into Sunday night...

Following rain on Saturday...a strong cold front will move through
Saturday evening dropping temperatures sharply. Cold temperatures
combining with moisture remaining behind the front will produce
snow showers across the area. The best chance for heavier snow
will be overnight Saturday into Sunday. Most locations can
expect one to two inches of accumulation but the northern plateau
may see three inches or more. Snow flurries may continue Sunday night
but little additional accumulation is expected. Additionally...strong
winds and cold temperatures will produce wind chills from -5 degrees
to 5 above Sunday into Monday.

Accumulating Snow Event This Weekend

Look for a powerful storm system to run through Middle Tennessee this weekend bringing rain along with a good chance of an accumulating snow event on Saturday night and Sunday. Areas to the west of Cookeville and vicinity should expect at least an inch while others should see up to 2" or more. Roads will be affected both Saturday and on Sunday as tough driving conditions will develop.

Snow continues on Sunday for much of our area and more frigid cold weather is expected as lows Sunday night will drop to around 12°. Monday will be frigid as well with highs only expected in the lower 20's with single digits common by Tuesday morning.

Timing of the changeover from rain to snow is expected sometime around midnight. Church goers should be extremely careful Sunday morning as roads are expected to be treacherous.
