Frost This Weekend Possible

Special Statement Statement as of 10:28 PM CDT on September 29, 2011 .

..Frost possible this weekend... A strong cold front will pass through middle Tennessee this weekend...bringing with it overnight low temperatures into the upper 30s and lower 40s across much of the area.

Some locations...specifically along the Highland Rim and on the Cumberland Plateau...may see areas reaching overnight lows in the mid 30s and even some patchy frost. The best chance for frost will likely be early Sunday morning and possibly early Monday morning as well.

Take necessary precautions this weekend to protect any outdoor plants or animals that may be harmed by near freezing temperatures.

Sunny Skies with 30's This Weekend

PERFECT TODAY WITH HINT OF BIG CHANGES:
Expect sunny skies as far as we can see (up through next Wednesday) with a high today of 79°. We start this morning in the middle 50's around Cookeville, Tennessee. Hints of the change in weather show-up this evening very late and on Friday. More on that below.

BIG CHANGES IN TEMPERATURE:
After today's late summer-like day, a change in our weather will turn us back into the middle of Autumn. Just to our west is a strong frontal boundary that will bring in the coolest weather yet this season. In fact, Sunday and Monday mornings will be downright cold! We'll dip into the 30's on both mornings. Friday's high will be 67°, but a pretty strong WNW wind will run 10 to 20 mph with higher gusts. Thankfully, it will be sunny! Saturday morning's low temps will be in the low 40's and I don't think we climb out of the 50's on Saturday afternoon.

Cookeville High School takes on Crossville this Friday night. If you're headed up to Cumberland County on Friday, take a jacket...you'll need it as temperatures back off quickly after sunset.

WARM-UP SUNDAY THROUGH NEXT WEEK:
After a very cold morning Sunday (expect 30's), we'll rebound to around 65° during the daytime and go right back into the 30's overnight Sunday into Monday with a high Monday of 71° and still warmer afternoons on Tuesday and Wednesday.

*Latest Local Forecast*

FYI, last time in 30's was way back on May 5th...almost 5 months ago.

Looks like we'll end September with 7.91"...it was our rainiest month since June and the 4th most this year. 2011 is running WAY AHEAD of normal as we're near our average annual total for precipitation and still have 3 months (more than 90 days) left in 2011.

Two Gorgeous Days Ahead; Then Cooler

NICE TODAY:
We're in the mid 50's today across much of our area. I'd call that 'jacket weather'...look for highs this afternoon to reach the mid to upper 70's for Cookeville, TN and vicinity. Only a slight chance of a very isolated shower. Same isolated shower chances tonight, low 57°.

CHILLY WEEKEND, but SUNNY:
Sunshine on Thursday, high 77° and then the bottom drops out for Friday and the weekend. Warmest day during weekend will be Friday with a high of 68°, Saturday will be just 63°, and Sunday 66°...lows during the weekend will be mainly in the lower 40's with Saturday night possibly down in the 30's. WOW, big taste of late fall.

Speaking of rain, we've received another .07" during the last 24 hours and are nearing 7" for the month of September. The complete rundown of the numbers are located in the Daily Almanac below.

Slight Sunday Thunderstorms

RAIN?:
Only a very slight chance of storms today across middle Tennessee with a high of 80° here in Cookeville. Expect a few degrees warmer back to the west toward Nashville. Best chance for rain will be Nashville westward and even then it won't be a significant chance. Rain chances increase greatly tonight through Monday as most of us will see some thunderstorm activity.

WINTER WEATHER OUTLOOK:
Don't forget...our winter weather outlook is now available and was published yesterday. The outlook will be update as more information is made available in October!

TITAN'S FORECAST:
Your Tennessee Titans host the Baltimore Ravens today at noon at LP Field in Nashville. I expect a kick-off temperature of 79-80° with only a very slight chance for rain during the game. Top temperature during the game is expected around 83° except at the end where I think it'll be hotter than a firecracker when our Titans dismantle those nasty Baltimore Ravens! Big Weekend Events Ahead

We'll touch on the weekend events a bit later in this post.

YOUR WEEKEND WEATHER
Slow clearing will be the key phrase over the next 24 hours. I do expect we'll see some sunshine today with only a very slight chance for showers. Those slight chances will hang with us through Sunday. I don't think we'll see much, IF ANY, rainfall out of this. Temperatures will be in the lower 70's today, near 80° on Saturday and Sunday and mid 80's by Tuesday.

Slow Warm-up Ahead

FROM SEATTLE BACK TO TENNESSEE:
Look for temperatures and skies to improve over the next several days as we transition from low 60's for highs into the upper 60's today and middle 70's on Friday and upper 70's for the weekend. A sneak peek into next week shows highs in the 80's under sunny skies. We do have a chance for some drizzle overnight and only slight chances for rain through the weekend.

Slight Rain Chances and Continued Cool

STAYING LIKE FALL:
This taste of autumn-like weather hangs on (although we're still 2 weeks away from the start) as we'll stay in the lower to middle 60's across the Upper Cumberland region today. There is a 50% chance for showers and it'll mainly be for the morning hours. Rain chances decrease for tonight through the weekend with increasing temperatures each day.

SUPER RAINS:
Totals from what was left of Tropical Storm Lee racked up some impressive totals right here in Putnam County. It seems the northwest section of our city/county had the most with nearly 7" recorded. Up in Monterey, they had almost 6 and 1/4 inches and in the downtown Cookeville area, nearly 6" was recorded at various sources. The highest total in Tennessee belongs to the Cleveland/Chattanooga areas with between 12" all the way up to 13.42" at a station just 3 miles to the ESE of Cleveland, TN in Bradley County.

COOLEST DAY SINCE WHEN?:
Tuesday's high of 59.9° was the coolest high temperature since a high of 58° way back on May 18th, a span of 108 days! Speaking of 59.9° degree high, did you know our typical high for September 6th is 85° and we were 25° above normal. To put that in perspective, if we were 25° ABOVE normal, the high would have been 110°. Tuesday's rain's were a record in Cookeville and I expect this morning's observation will produce another record.

Wind and Rain

QUITE A CHANGE:
Big rains from what was left of Tropical Storm Lee have dumped incredible amounts across Tennessee. Some locations in the eastern part of the state have seen more than 12". Here in Cookeville, I measured 5.35" with my CoCoRaHS 4" manual gauge since the rain began.

COOL:
Expect showers today with a NNE wind from around 10 to 15 mph. There will be higher gusts this morning. Today's high temperature will be around 64°...what a huge change from the 90's last week! Tonight, scattered showers and we being to dry out, low 57°.

Big Forecast Changes

The Weather Guy is taking a few days of R&R with his family. Posts will be sporadic.

Labor Day weekend is upon us. We expect some great changes ahead. Chance of storms ahead with an approaching frontal boundary. Sunday's highs will be 10+ degrees cooler.

The bigger news is that tropical storm Lee remnants will affect our weather with possibly heavy rains Monday and Tuesday. Current estimates tell us some areas of Middle Tennessee could see between 5&8 inches. We will watch this closely.

Have a great weekend.

More Heat; Break Comes Around Labor Day

NOTE: Posts will be sporadic through Labor Day as I'm taking a few days off. Latest, local forecast is always available just to the right of these blog posts near the top of the blog!

(who is ready for this?)

WELCOME TO SEPTEMBER:
We've turned over a new month and left a hot/dry August behind. It was the 5th driest August since records have been kept. We discussed that in yesterday's post. Temperatures average only about a 1/2 degree higher than normal but seemed hotter due to having no rain! We are all looking forward to temperatures cooling down and I can confirm we'll see highs running 10° plus cooler next week after Labor Day!!

HEATWAVE CONTINUES THROUGH WEEKEND:
We will be sunny and very hot through Saturday and then change will take place. We'll say 92° today, 94° Friday, and 93° Sunday. A slight rain chance on Sunday, high 89° and then with frontal passage temps will only be 81° Monday, and in the 70's on Tuesday and Wednesday!!
