Blazing Hot Sunday

Expect the highs on Sunday to top 100° for the 4th day in a row.

We saw the temperature in Cookeville, TN hit 105° on Saturday breaking yet another record. Heat index readings hit 110°. This is a dangerous situation to those who spend a great deal of time outdoors. It is imperative that you stay hydrated during the mid-morning all the way through sunset. By the time you are thirsty, it is too late.

Both Nashville and Crossville broke records again on Saturday.

SUNDAY THRU JULY 4th:
We do expect a similar day to the last two on Sunday with highs easily going over 100°. We'll call it 105°. Over the next 7-days don't expect much in the way of rainfall, but the coolest day of the week will be July 4 (Wednesday) where highs will 'only' reach around 95°. Shower chances increase from 0% on Sunday to around 20% by Wednesday.

Heat Advisory Through Sunday

Expect highs of 106+ on Saturday. The heat advisory (see below) is in effect through Sunday night.

InteractiveNWS - Alert Information

Record Heat Continues Today Through The Weekend

Sizzling temperatures are on tap for today across the Cookeville, TN area. Expect a high of 105° here in town. That will break a long-standing record. The 100's for highs will continue right through the weekend and into the early part of next week.

We started at 65° at 5:00 am and had climbed to 71° by 7 am. Since the sun is rising, so is the temperature. In just 30 minutes, we gone from 71° to 78°. Going to be a very hot day across Cookeville.

Unfortunately, there is no rain in the forecast through the weekend and probably not even likely until at least next Wednesday or Thursday. Conditions are extremely dry and very dangerous in regards to a fire being easily set and able to spread quickly.

As of now, the professional fireworks show going on in Algood, TN at the Algood ball fields is still on.

Over 100° Today....Even Hotter Friday

We topped 100° on Thursday afternoon and had a high of 102°. If that temperature holds up as the official high, it will tie a record for this date set back in 1936. We're expecting even hotter weather on Friday (104-105° here in Cookeville)...the record is 99°, so I'm quite confident the record will be broken easily.

5 pm temperatures around Tennessee ranged from 96° at Crossville (a new daily hi temp for them) to 105° in Murfreesboro.

Much more on the heat later tonight.

Heatwave Moves Into Full Swing

After climbing back in the 90's on Wednesday (just a one day reprieve in the 80's Tuesday), we'll push near 100° on Thursday and exceed the 100° mark Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. We may even top 100° on Monday and possibly Tuesday.

Records may well fall on both Friday and Saturday. We'll wait and see how that turns out.

Overnight temperatures in the Cookeville area will fall to near 60° by sunrise on Thursday.

Across the forecast map for middle Tennessee, south central Kentucky, and north Alabama, there are Red Flag Warnings, a Heat Advisory, and Air Quality Alerts near the metro areas. Nearly all of the area is under some sort of Special Weather Statement related to the heat.

Expect temperatures in the Nashville area to push 105° this weekend.

WEDNESDAY'S HIGHS:

We'll push records later this week.

Cookeville high temperature records for those days are:
Thursday - 102 in 1936
Friday - 99 in 1936

Record Heatwave Later This Week

After a simply gorgeous day across the region today with highs in many parts of the Upper Cumberland in the lower 80's, we'll be ROASTING over the next several days with possibilities of 100°+ readings especially on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

Cookeville high temperature records for those days are:
Thursday - 102 in 1936
Friday - 99 in 1936
Saturday - 95 in 1933

Our best chance for record setting heat will occur both Friday and Saturday.
Not sure we'll hit the record Thursday.

Now is the time to review Heat Safety Information
*Do not be a victim*
*Slow down*
*Drink plenty of water*
*Take frequent breaks if working outdoors especially in direct sunlight*
*Wear light-colored clothing*
*Do not leave a child or pet in the car unattended ever*
*Eat lighter meals*
*Do not drink alcoholic or caffeine-type beverages*
*Spend more time in air-conditioned spaces*

Even if you don't feel thirsty, drink plenty of water. In this heat, when you are thirsty it can be too late. Again, don't be a victim. Take these practical steps above and you'll cope with the heat.

Nice Tuesday With Another Heatwave Ahead

We're looking at one of the nicer days in quite some time today as highs will only reach the middle 80's today. The nice part is the northeast winds, which will gust to around 20 mph and much lower humidity levels. You'll notice the difference from the 8 straight days in the 90's. Overnight, temperatures will drop quickly and we will end up in the mid 50's by morning.

DON'T GET USED TO IT:
The heat returns on Wednesday with a high of 94°. But that isn't the worst news, there is no rain predicted until at least Saturday. Even then, the chances are remote at best. Temperatures will continue to heat up and I believe we'll push the 100-degree mark on both Thursday and Friday with near 100-degree temps for the weekend.

*Special Weather Statement*

Slight Rain Chances Plus Turning Cooler For A Day

Under the weather...short post today.

Good news, at least for a day, across middle TN. This oppressive heat continues for one more day before we get about a 36-hour relief. Today's high will be around 95° with a small chance of an isolated thunderstorm this afternoon.

The relief comes in the form of a front that will slip through our area later this afternoon. Overnight on Monday, expect temps to drop into the 50's. On Tuesday, it'll be dry with low humidity and breezy conditions. Highs in the 80's and it'll feel more like the 70's. Tuesday night will be chilly with a low by Wednesday morning of only 55°

After that, get ready for another long heatwave with highs nearing 100° by Friday backing off into the 90's for the weekend and back up near 100° by first of next week.

I have family down in the Florida panhandle this week and T.S. Debby is ruining their vacation along with many others.

A Very Hot Sunday

Expect middle 90's today across much of the Upper Cumberland region with upper 90's toward the Nashville area. This could be our hottest day of the year in Cookeville. I'll call it 95°. No chance for rain today under sunny skies.

SEE YESTERDAY'S POST ABOUT HEAT SAFETY!

Saturday's high was 92.5° marking the sixth day in a row of 90+ degree weather. The heat index or 'feels like' temperature hit 95°. We had no rainfall and this is the eighth straight dry day. When I mowed my yard on Saturday, I could hear the crunchy sound of dried up grass.

Low tonight will be 67° by Monday morning. We have a slight chance at a thunderstorm on Monday with the approach of a cool front. Temperatures behind the will be quite cool with the Monday night low of 61°. Some areas may even drop into the upper 50's. Tuesday's high will be just 82° and another night back around 60°. After that, the HEATWAVE intensifies with near 100° by the end of next week.

Here is the latest on Tropical Storm Debby. She is slowly moving to the north at 2 mph and is expected to turn west, which is good news for the Florida coast and bad news for the Louisiana and Texas coasts.

InteractiveNWS - Alert Information

Rain This Morning, Thunderstorms Tonight

Light rain is falling across the Upper Cumberland this morning. I expect it to wrap up later this morning. We'll be dry for much of today but then as a cold front approaches late tonight, the air will destabilize causing an outbreak of showers and thunderstorms. Some of the storms could be strong with winds to 50 mph and contain hail. It is possible the thunderstorms continue into Tuesday morning.

Highs for today (Monday) will reach around 80° after a high of just 76° on Tuesday.

The weather becomes quite calm for the rest of the week with highs in the 80's and lows in the 60's. Next rain chances won't occur until the weekend.

Fantastic Weather Through Saturday

We're started in the mid 50's this morning and at 7 am temperatures have moderated to the mid 60's. I expect we'll see highs from 83-85° by later this afternoon with a light easterly wind at around 5 mph. Overnight, we'll fall back into the upper 50's by Saturday morning.

Saturday's forecast should be a repeat of today but with a couple of degrees added to it. Highs will range from 85-87° with a south wind 5-10 mph.

Storm chances enter our forecast very late on Saturday into Sunday and will last into the middle of next week. Our best chances for rainfall appear to be later on Sunday night and into Monday.

An Air Quality Alert is in effect for today around the Nashville area. The cities on the list include Springfield, Gallatin, Lafayette, Dickson, Ashland City, Nashville, Lebanon, Mt. Juliet, Hartsville, Carthage, Centerville, Franklin, Brentwood, Murfreesboro, and Woodbury just to name a few.

Storm Damages From Monday Night

Quite a list of damage reports from last evenings potent thunderstorms and winds that blew through north Cookeville, Algood, and surrounding areas. This list isn't all inclusive, so if you have more damage reports, let me know via e-mail or comment here or on Facebook.

THE LIST:
Power out on Plantation Circle above White Plains - Algood
Power out in north Algood near Timberland Subdivision
UCEMC reports multiple outages; crews out all night
Report of a trampoline flipped over by winds
Trees down on Turnberry in White Plains
Trees down 1 mile SE of Algood in White Plains
Power out in White Plains
Tree down on cars on Holland Drive in Bangham
Mix of small and large trees down in Timberland Sub. in Algood
Power out on Mirandy Rd and surrounding areas in Algood
Trees down on Brotherton Mountain Road in Algood
Trees down on W. Thomas Allen Road near Fairview Road

Again, there are probably many reports of trees down and power out.

Last night's rains combined with rainfall in the early morning hours (around 1:30 am to 2 am) dropped just under 1" (0.98") on us here in northeast Cookeville.

The great news is our weather will be quiet for the next 7 days.
For now the next rainfall event won't happen until at least the first of next week.
Temps will be mild today and gradually warm up each day.

Strong Storms Possible Later Today and Tonight

Storms will form in the late afternoon hours for much of middle Tennessee with the greatest threat over the western sections. The main hazards will be damaging winds and large hail. Again, the biggest threat of severe weather will be west of the I-65 area. This DOES NOT include the Cookeville area.

REST OF WEEK DRY:
After the front pushes through the area, expect us to dry out with slightly cooler temperatures for Tuesday and Wednesday. We'll stay in a dry pattern through the weekend as temperatures begin to warm.

Today (Monday): Storms becoming more likely in the late afternoon with a high of 81°. Precip chances are 60% and winds should be fairly light today.

Tonight: 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms mainly before midnight. Low of 58°.

Tuesday: Sunny and cooler with a high of 79°

Severe Weather Chances Monday

Overnight on Sunday we do expect any severe weather to stay to our south. That, however, will change on Monday as much of the area will be under the gun for some possible severe thunderstorms. Rain chances will be in the 60-70% range.

Low tonight around 64° with a possible chance of a shower or thunderstorm
High on Monday of 81°
Should dry out for rest of work week with highs in the upper 70's to near 80°.

I'll have much more in the morning before working hours.

Severe Weather Possible Monday

Warmer weather is on tap for Sunday with plenty of sunshine. Light winds will make outdoor activity quite comfortable. Highs will reach around 82° this afternoon in the Cookeville area.

We are watching the potential for severe weather to develop for middle Tennessee on Monday. At this point, the main threat is damaging winds with a lesser threat from large hail. Obviously, we'll keep up with that and keep you informed.

Interesting article in Sunday's Herald-Citizen newspaper about 18 cases of spotted fever in the Upper Cumberland region. There are tips in the article on how not to become a victim of a tick bite.

The rest of the 7-day features below normal temps for Tuesday through Friday but it should be mainly dry after the upcoming Monday weather event.

Chilly Overnight and Gorgeous Saturday

Downright chilly tonight for the Upper Cumberland as temperatures are already down to 52° at 11:15 pm. We do expect temps to drop on down into the 40's overnight. Saturday morning will be quite chilly as we start in the 40's and will rebound to the low 70's by tomorrow afternoon. Winds should be mainly calm through the morning hours.

Sunday should be even nicer with sunny skies and a high near 80°.

25 Degrees Cooler

If you remember last Friday, we were up in the 90's and the heat index was pushing 100°. Today, however, just a short week later, we'll struggle to get into the upper 60's with scattered light showers this morning and mostly cloudy conditions this afternoon. Winds will be from the northwest at around 5 to 15 mph.

Last evening's strong to severe weather stayed to our west and the heaviest rains moved north of the Cookeville area. Expectations were for around one inch of total precip and we have recorded just 2/10ths of an inch.

Tonight will be very cool with the lows dropping to the mid and upper 40's by Saturday morning. This is some of the coolest weather in nearly a month. By the way, the coolest June 1 ever was 42 degrees back in 1966.

Saturday's forecast will be partly sunny with highs in the mid 70's and Sunday will be sunny again with highs in the upper 70's. Enjoy this late spring cool down! The rest of the 7-day forecast is located at the link below.

By the way, we'll have the complete breakdown of what happened in May. Look for it this weekend!
