Presidential Politics

I want to take a quick side journey away from weather and into politics. Most of us aren't paying much, if any, attention to the chatter of politics right now. If you'd like to know which candidate stands for issues important to you, I encourage you to click on this site. It will help you figure out which person running for President supports your issues. It is very quick and very interesting.

Sunday Roundup

(Not from my home!! This is New Brunswick, Canada!)

Interesting observation from the Middle Tennessee Weather Fact of The Day from the NWS in Nashville. Here it is:

On September 30, 1949...Temperature at Nashville drops to 36, setting a record low for the month.

That's the kind of weather I'd like to see!! I'm sure the rest of you could agree with me.

We should be seeing the numbers real soon concerning September temperatures. They will be very close to setting a record for the warmest August and September combined. As of Wednesday (according to this post on the NWS-Nashville blog), it was.

Our forecast is for DRY weather and a warming trend through the rest of this week. You can see the forecast by clicking here.

A Perfect Saturday!

After starting out in the upper 40's, we've rebounded nicely into the upper 70's in most parts of Middle Tennessee. Not a cloud in the sky, along with a calm wind and low humidity has made this day quite nice!

My beautiful daughter ran her best time yet in her Middle School Cross Country Match in Smyrna today. Her time was 10:44, placing her 14th overall and her team placed third!!

Tonight, we are looking for lows in the middle and upper 40's over all of the Plateau. Nashville will see lower and middle 50's with even warmer temperatures inside of downtown.

Nice Night for Football

The Friday night/Saturday am forecast is for cool temperatures. Already, as we close in on 7 pm, some areas are reporting lower and mid 60's. We'll go on down in the 40's here. Areas closer to the cities will see 50's+.

It'll be a great weather night for High School Football fans and players.

We expect to push 80° on Saturday!

Rain, Fog, and Other Fun Stuff

Downtown picture of Cookeville, TN this morning. Where are the buildings? Shrouded in fog!

We received .22 inches of rain since yesterday. Went almost 2 weeks without a drop.

The fog has socked us in this morning. Visibility is near zero in many places.

Our forecast has us in the 70's today and in the 40's tonight! WOW!

On this date in Middle TN Weather History from 1906, Nashville gets 2.60" of rainfall. We haven't received that much for the entire month this year.

More activity going on in the Gulf and Atlantic. Run over to the National Hurricane Center site to check it out!

Finally, my TTU Golden Eagles beat UT-Martin last night 13-10. It was a big win for Watson Brown's program here at TTU. We're now 4 and 1 on the season!

Rain Soon?

September 26, 2007 update for Middle Tennessee

According to our latest forecast, we're looking at about a 30% chance tonight and a 70% chance tomorrow (Thursday). Obviously, we are ready to see the raindrops. I told my wife this morning about waking up and 'thinking' it was raining outside. What I apparently heard was our ceiling fan. In my fog of sleep, I mistook the fan for rain! Oh well, maybe tomorrow morning I will hear rain on the roof.

The NWS posted a Special Weather Statement today concerning the warm temperatures over the last couple of months. You can view it by clicking here.

New Storm-based Warnings begin October 1st. I think it's a great move toward more accuracy when Severe Weather strikes. Read more by going here.

Good Tuesday Morning

Where is the rain? That is a question I'm hearing a lot lately. The best answer I can give is to just be patient for another 24 to 48 hours. We have an approaching cold front that should increase our chances for rain in the next couple of days. Click here to see entire 7-day forecast.

Due to our very dry summer, I can almost guarantee you that we won't see those type of fall colors here in Middle Tennessee this year.

Keep an eye on the very active tropics by visiting the National Hurricane Center's website. Click here to go there!

As many of you know, I am active in CoCoRaHS (the Community Collabrative Rain Hail and Snow Network). They now have a blog. I've added them to the blogs I read section of my site. Feel free to check them out by clicking here!

New Purchase & Weather Stuff

Well, I finally did it! :-) Purchased a 'camcorder' or video camera. The reason for the purchase was that my wife and I are expecting a little one in mid to late October. Some of you probably thought it was for weather stuff. Well, I'll probably use it for that also! :-) But don't tell my bride!

We need rain. All of these beautiful, sunny days aren't helping with the huge deficit. Remnants of the tropical depression that came on shore in Florida MAY help us by Tuesday night and onward through Thursday as an accompanying cold front barrels through. This will lower our temps by 10+ degrees.

Speaking of temperatures, there is a great Autumn post over at NashvilleWx.com. You may click this link to go directly to it.

Over at our baby blog, I've posted a poll as to what you think our baby will weigh at birth. Go check it out!

Tech Whips Murray

Our Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles piled up the points once again on Thursday night as they rolled over Murray State 48-24. Check out the story from TTUSPORTS.com

The weather continues to be very nice here in the Upper Cumberland. See the forecast by going here!

Have a great Friday! :)

Tennessee Tech versus Murray State

(Picture is courtesy of the WGN Weather Blog in Chicago)

Tonight's football game in the Upper Cumberland pits our Golden Eagles of TTU against the Murray State Racers. Tech enters the game with a 2-1 record and has averaged over 50 points in the last two games. Murray, on the other hand, is 1-2.

Gametime temperatures should be around 80 after a high of 85 today.

Fall equinox is this Sunday. Goodbye to summer and hello to Autumn colors. One of my blog readers commented that our colors won't be too good this year and I believe he is right. Thought I'd spoil all of you with the picture above!

Beautiful Weather Continues

Our beautiful weather continues across Tennessee. Temperatures are running in the 50's for lows and the 80's for highs. We see this pattern staying the same through the weekend. By Monday, we could (and emphasize could) have a slight chance for rain.

You can access the forecast by clicking here!

The National Weather Service has the Middle Tennessee Weather Fact of the Day and today's fact is interesting. It talks about the heatwave from 1954. Check it out by clicking here. (Guess those darned ol' suv's from the early 50's caused that heatwave, too!) ;-)

Hey, a cool tool by the Blogger folks at Google has been released. It shows the pictures that are being uploaded to all the blogs in real time. Access it by clicking here. I've look at it and it's really neat...Google uses 'safesearch' technology, so you shouldn't have any issues with objectionable content.

Have a great day!

Nice Week Ahead

Our workweek weather forecast shows cool mornings and warm afternoons each day.

Hard to believe, but Autumn is on the calendar for this weekend. The above photo is Cucumber Falls in Pennsylvania.

Colts 22 Titans 20

Our Tennessee Titans came up just short versus the Indianapolis Colts. I must say, however, they looked great. The Titans are a FORCE to be reckoned with in the NFL.

The weather at LP Field was just AWESOME!

Hang in there Titans..this is going to be a great year!

Sunday Update

Our Tennessee Titans square off with the world champion Indianapolis Colts today at 12 Noon Central Time. Kick-0ff temps should be quite nice (mid 70's).

Overnight lows across the Plateau region were mostly in the middle 40's.
Here is a list.
Crossville Airport 44
Pikeville 44
Spring City 44
Sparta 45
Cookeville 45
Albany, KY 45

Hard to believe we were near 100° a few weeks ago.

The 7-day forecast looks nice with temperature moderating again into the lower 80's for highs. No significant chances of rain in the forecast.

Great Weekend Weather!

Love the forecast! The 7-day promises some wonderful weather.

Overnight, we collected .36 inches of rain. In some sections of southern middle Tennessee and in Alabama, I've seen 2+ inches of rain.

Tropical Storm Ingrid has formed in the Atlantic. You can get updates by clicking here!

Hurricane Humberto

The 4:00 AM update on Humberto shows winds topping 85 mph and just onshore over Southeast Texas. I've seen some reports of wind gusts over 80 mph. The interesting part for us is the track of this storm will bring Humberto into Tennessee this weekend. We do need the rain...but obviously not 10-15 inches in a one or two day period.

Your source for updates with tropical weather is the National Hurricane Center. As always, they do an excellent job.

Our 7-day forecast for Cookeville and the Upper Cumberland region of TN can be accessed by clicking here.

In Memory of Lance Clark

A United States Marine from right here in Cookeville, Tennessee has been killed in Iraq. His name is LCrpl. Lance Murphy Clark, a 21 year old. He died in Southern Iraq on September 7th accoring to Marine officers.

They expect his body to be returned home tomorrow (Wednesday) to Cookeville.

LCrpl. Clark graduated from Cookeville High in 2004 and joined the Marines in 2005. He had already completed one tour of duty and was called back for his second tour in July.

According to his mother, he said that if he didn't return, he'd see her in heaven. His mother is also quoted a saying 'he was a good person, a sweet boy that never gave us any trouble.'

Thank you Lance Corporal Clark for your service to our country and for your ultimate sacrifice. Your dedication will NEVER, EVER be forgotten!

Overnight Rains

An approaching front has delivered much needed rain to the Upper Cumberland region of Tennessee. Here in Cookeville, we've received 1.03 inches overnight. Precipitation reports are coming in. Go to CoCoRaHS to get the latest rainfall information.

We'll see 50's for lows tonight. Can anyone say autumn?! :)

I know I can say that and you will as well when you check out the 7-day forecast from the National Weather Service. You can see it by clicking here!

Remember, it is September 11th....never forget about the attack that occurred on this date.

How 'bout them Titans!!!

In a very hot and humid Jacksonville Municipal Stadium, our Tennessee Titans played smash-mouth with the Jags and came out on top 13-10. Chris Brown had a HUGE day with 175 rushing yards on 19 carries!

Apparently, the Florida heat affected the Jags much more than the Titans. Hey, at least that is one benefit of our hot Tennessee summer! :)

WAY TO GO TITANS!

Sunday Morning Update

Radar shows that numerous showers have broken out over the western sections of middle Tennessee. We should see some rain here in eastern sections also. Looking at our forecast, it's the first time we've had shower chances each day.

The drought continues to be a big story over all of Tennessee. It'll take several months of above average rainfall to put a dent in our shortfall.

Gabrielle is poised to hit the North Carolina coast today. The current update is located here.
The National Hurricane Center has done an excellent job tracking this system.

Lastly, Davis Nolan over at NashvilleWX (WKRN-ABC Station-News 2 in Nashville) blogged about the 'lowest' high in the last 49 days in Nashville. You can read about it by clicking here!

Changes, Gabrielle, TTU & More!

Could our stubborn weather pattern by changing soon? I believe it will very soon. By this time next week, our highs may only reach 80! Check out the forecast by clicking here!

Gabrielle seems to be getting her act together. The Nat'l Hurricane Center issued a Special Tropical Disturbance Statement. You can read the full statement by clicking here.

TTU (that's Tennessee Tech for you out-of-towners who may not know) got off to a roaring start in the home opener. Our outstanding receiver and kick returner Larry Shipp took the opening kickoff to the end zone to start the ballgame. It got the record crowd into the game quickly! :) TTU won 45-21 over Cumberland University. Next up our team is Concordia College.

I'm looking forward to the cool down. Read a note from the NWS-Nashville about 43 consecutive days of above normal high temperatures. What a stat!

Oh, and the Fun Weather Fact of The Day is this....from 1925
On September 7, 1925...A late-summer heat wave brings the hottest temperature ever recorded in Middle Tennessee as Clarksville observes a reading of 112 degrees. (The record high for the entire state of Tennessee is 113 (Perryville, 8/9/1940).) Pinewood tops out at 108 degrees.

All Eyes Are On The Carolinas

While it seems to National Hurricane Center is downplaying the latest system, others believe the low pressure in the Atlantic about 375 miles south-southwest of Bermuda is poised to become Hurricane Gabrielle in the next few days.

Conventional wisdom places this storm somewhere between the upper parts of North Carolina down into South Carolina. The most interesting part of this is the storm will travel over the very warm Gulf Stream. This could lead to quick intesification.

If I were a homeowner or business owner on the Atlantic Coast, I would be keeping up with the latest on this possible major storm!

Felix and Gabrielle

With Hurricane Felix on land in Central America and quickly being downgraded, the things people in that region will need to watch for are flooding and mudslides. They are capable of causing devastating loss of life. We may see stories coming from that area over the next several days.

In the Atlantic, a system is trying to organize and would become Gabrielle when and if that happens. Folks on the East Coast from South Carolina to Massachusetts ought to be paying attention to this one. It could affect plans for this upcoming weekend.

Click here for the Nat'l Hurricane Center to get the latest information on these tropical systems.

Locally, here in Cookeville, TN, our forecast calls for a mostly quiet week!

One last thing, this fun weather fact (on this date) from the National Weather Service in Nashville, Murfreesboro, TN measured it's greatest one-day rainfall ever in 1986 with 8.13"....WOW!

Felix and More

Hurricane Felix is a monster Category 5 storm. Winds are sustained at 165 mph with gusts running up to 185. Saw a story this morning concerning the hurricane hunter flight. Apparently, they had to quit their mission of measuring the storm due to significant turbulence and graupel. What is graupel? I'll look it up and let you know. :)

Winter Outlook

For those of you 'worried' about the Winter (or lack thereof) after our Hot August, I have some news from the good folks at the Farmers' Almanac. I took a spin around their website and found the Winter 2007-2008 Outlook. Looks 'interesting', doesn't it?

Their weather section has some good information. Click here to go there.
