A Hot Monday Ahead

Mostly sunny skies are on tap for your Monday across the Upper Cumberland. We're already in the mid 60's at 7 this morning. Expect hot temperatures as we'll hit at least 87° for the high this afternoon. Winds will be from the SSW at 5 to 10 mph. Storm chances ramp up (50%) over night with a low of 63°.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms on Tuesday (about a 40% chance) with a high of 82°.

Mostly sunny skies for Wednesday and Thursday and rain chances return on Friday. Highs in the mid to upper 80's each day.

April ends today and has been a topsy-turvy month in regards to temperatures. April started out very warm with highs in the 80's at the beginning of the month. By the 11th, the high was just 55° and the next morning we were down to 28°, which would be the coldest temperature recorded during April 2012. We warmed right back up again, but then took a tumble from the 21st through the 24th where temps hung around the mid 50's to lower 60's. Another light frost occurred on the morning of April 24. April's precipitation was much below normal with just 1.85" being recorded.

Welcome To The 80's

Temperatures have returned to the 80's for highs across middle Tennessee. We're not returning to 80's fashions, movies, or other stuff as referenced above!

Saturday's high was 83° and we'll be a couple more degrees higher today. Normal highs this time of year are around 72°. I checked our record high and it was 94° from back in 1896.

So, we're going with sunshine for your Sunday and a calm wind this morning becoming south southwest at around only 5 mph. Put plenty of sunscreen on yourself and your children.

Partly cloudy and comfortable tonight with a low around 60°.

Slight chance of showers to start the work week with a high of 85° under a mostly sunny sky. The rest of the  7-day forecast is below at the latest, local forecast link.

Nice Friday (Thursday Evening Franklin Tornado)

A beautiful morning to start across the Upper Cumberland. Sunny skies and a bit cool in the mid 50's this morning. We'll see a high of 72°, which is right around normal for this time of year. We'll have a slight chance of showers today, although most of the action will be to our south near the Alabama border.

We had morning hail yesterday across much of the area (see the News 2 photo above from Mike Gentry here in Putnam County from Facebook). A list of reported hail is below. Last night, a tornado affected the Franklin, TN area and the National Weather Service will have their storm survey team out this morning to determine what exactly happened. The picture showing overturned cars above was from Facebook.

Local Storm Damage Reports

The rest of this weekend will be warm with highs in the 80's and lows in the upper 50's. We'll continue to see a slight chance for precipitation in the form of thunderstorms both Saturday and Sunday.

The week of weather across the Cookeville area looks much nicer than the past few days as we return to above normal temperatures. Expect a cold, windy night across the mid-south. Frost may form in some locations, especially those in sheltered, low-lying areas and the Cumberland Plateau region.

We'll go with frost developing, most likely between 3 am and 7 am with lows in the upper 30's in Cookeville and lower in the higher elevations toward Monterey.

Sunny, Windy and Chilly Monday

We're waking up to temperatures around 40° this morning across much of middle Tennessee. Highs will reach just 55°, which is some 15° below normal. The big news will be the winds. Due to a big low pressure system in the northeast, you can expect gusty north winds from 15 to 25 mph this afternoon and gusts from 30 to 35 mph. This will cause tough driving conditions for high profile vehicles as well as boaters on area lakes.

Possible frost tonight with a low of 38° by sunrise on Tuesday.

Tuesday's high will be 62° and we'll continue to warm up the rest of the week with a chance of showers and thunderstorms.

What Is A Rain Shadow

You all are full of questions and I enjoy hearing from people who read this weather blog.

A couple of weeks ago, I was at Progressive Savings Bank in Cookeville and was asked, by Kelly who works as a CSR, what it was called when it is dry on the other side of a mountain. At the time, my brain wasn't working well.

The power of Google search came up with the answer before I left.

It's called a RAIN SHADOW.

Below is a graphic on a rain shadow.

Brief rain shadow article from USA TODAY.

Thanks to the ladies at Progressive Savings Bank on the question about Rain Shadows!

Chilly and Windy Sunday

Do we call this blackberry winter?

Temperatures are struggling to rise this morning due to a persistent northwest wind and excessive cloud cover. Our low this morning was 44.7° and we've managed to get to 46.1° at 10:30 am. Combine this with a steady northwesterly breeze from 5-12 mph and you have an actual wind chill value today in the lower 40's. These temperatures will curtail most outdoor activity for Sunday.

I don't expect much improvement and in fact, we'll probably see some showers by lunch. We may see a peek or two of sunshine, but it won't do much good. The winds will continue to pick up to the 10-20 mph range during the afternoon hours. One concern we are watching is an upper level low that could cause scattered showers and some possible thunderstorms. Chances are not great, but it is worth mentioning. Highs are expected to reach the mid 50's but we'll have to hustle to get there.

Skies won't clear much over night, but temps will drop into the mid 30's. I do think we'll have enough wind to prevent formation of frost.

Monday should be mostly sunny and a high in mid 50's. Monday night could bring frost to the mid-state with lows in the 30's. Frost formation will depend upon whether the winds calm down. At this point, it is still questionable as to whether or not we will see frost.

Rainy Saturday with Cooler Weather Ahead

(potential snow maker for NE through Tuesday)

CURRENT CONDITIONS & QUICKIE FORECAST:
Waking up to rain showers and cool temperatures across the Upper Cumberland today. Expect your Saturday to stay mainly cloudy with scattered showers through the afternoon hours. A few showers may remain into the evening hours on the Plateau.

So far, we've received .24" of rain in Cookeville. We moderated from the upper 40's into the lower 50's and expect the high to around 62° today.

REST OF THE WEEKEND:
Slight shower chances overnight with a low of 43° with a very slight chance late Sunday with a high of 62°. Winds will be gusty on Sunday making temperatures feel colder than they are. Colder Sunday night under a clear sky and a low of 37°. I believe the frost will hold off due to the north wind from 5-10 mph.

FROST EARLY NEXT WEEK?:
For Monday, a mostly sunny, but cool day with a high of just 56°. Typical high this time of year is 71°. Monday night will be cold once again with a slight (for now) chance for frost by Tuesday morning. Calm winds with a low of 38°.

We'll warm up as we get further into next week.

SNOW FOR THE NORTHEAST?:
The graphic above shows a potential winter storm for parts of the northeast from Cleveland, OH to Erie, PA, to Buffalo, NY south through Pittsburg, PA down to West Virginia, Virginia, NC, and extreme NE TN.

Plant Them 'Maters

IT IS TIME:
Many of you have asked about planting season and when you should go ahead and put the tomato plants in the ground. Typically, we use April 15 (or Tax Day) as the date to plant. Over the last 30 years, the last freeze has occurred before April 15, so go ahead and plant away!

LATEST FREEZING DATE:
Now, does this mean it never freezes after that date? NO! Sometimes, but VERY RARELY, we get a spring freeze into late April and early May. The latest date ever recorded of 32° is May 10 and that occurred in 1966. Typically though, we are home free after April 15.

WHY GOOD FRIDAY?
Good Friday marks the day that Jesus Christ died for all the sins of mankind. Jesus was God in the flesh. The first chapter of John deals with the fact that the word was God. All things were made by God. The word was made flesh and he dwelt among us (Jesus). Christ suffered for sins so that he might bring us to God (1 Peter 3:18).

Take time today to meditate upon the word of God. You are fearfully and wonderfully made in the image of God. If take nothing else away from this, know that God loves you, has a great plan for you, Jesus died for you, and you can have everlasting life through knowing who Jesus is. I hope this weekend is the best one of your life. Want to know more? Just ask me!
