Opryland Hotel Explosion

11:15 PM UPDATE:
Statement from Gaylord Opryland Media Room

Media Statement June 19, 2012 10:45 pm Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center

There was an explosion at approximately 8:15 p.m. this evening at Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center. While it is still early and the investigation is ongoing, authorities have said that the explosion appears to be mechanical in nature. There are no reported injuries at this time. The hotel is sold out and was full at the time of the incident. The entire hotel has been evacuated while authorities investigate the scene. The Nashville Fire Department, Nashville Police Department are on site and structural engineers are currently inspecting the building before guests and STARS (employees) are permitted reentry to the resort. Gas lines to the hotel have been turned off at this time. The hotel's STARS are distributing water, sodas and snacks to the evacuated guests while they wait outside on the lawns. Additionally, the resort's motor coaches have taken guests to the adjacent Grand Ole Opry House for refreshments and air conditioning while they wait. The authorities are working quickly to clear the facility for reentry.

BREAKING NEWS FROM NASHVILLE:
Word is coming tonight of an explosion at the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center in Nashville, Tennessee. The entire hotel complex has been evacuated. No injuries are reported.

(photo: GaylordHotels.com)

Kim Lawson with the Nashville Fire Department tells local NBC-affiliate WSMV there is a smell of natural gas in the area.

Interestingly, there were about 3000 county sheriffs attending the 2012 National Sheriffs Association Conference when this incident occurred.

You may remember the hotel flooded back in May 2010 and was closed for months when the Cumberland River rose out it's banks due to nearly 20" of rain falling in two days in Middle TN.

Another 90 Degree Day

Expect another hot one across the Upper Cumberland region today as temperatures will once again reach up into the 90's with plenty of sunshine. We'll call it 91° for the high in Cookeville. Areas toward Nashville will be slightly warmer while areas toward Crossville will be slightly cooler.

Thunderstorm chances hold off until Thursday and Friday. Even then the chances will be minimal.

Monday's high in Cookeville was 90.3° at 4:03 pm while the low temperature was 62.6°. This morning's low was 64.7° at 5:21 am. There was no rainfall recorded on Monday and conditions across all of the region are quite dry. I've heard from several farmers and gardeners asking for a forecast of steady rainfall.

SIGNIFICANT Weather Advisory

Strong weather coming in.

InteractiveNWS - Alert Information

Rain This Morning, Thunderstorms Tonight

Light rain is falling across the Upper Cumberland this morning. I expect it to wrap up later this morning. We'll be dry for much of today but then as a cold front approaches late tonight, the air will destabilize causing an outbreak of showers and thunderstorms. Some of the storms could be strong with winds to 50 mph and contain hail. It is possible the thunderstorms continue into Tuesday morning.

Highs for today (Monday) will reach around 80° after a high of just 76° on Tuesday.

The weather becomes quite calm for the rest of the week with highs in the 80's and lows in the 60's. Next rain chances won't occur until the weekend.

Quite a list of damage reports from last evenings potent thunderstorms and winds that blew through north Cookeville, Algood, and surrounding areas. This list isn't all inclusive, so if you have more damage reports, let me know via e-mail or comment here or on Facebook.

THE LIST:
Power out on Plantation Circle above White Plains - Algood
Power out in north Algood near Timberland Subdivision
UCEMC reports multiple outages; crews out all night
Report of a trampoline flipped over by winds
Trees down on Turnberry in White Plains
Trees down 1 mile SE of Algood in White Plains

Mix of small and large trees down in Timberland Sub. in Algood
Power out on Mirandy Rd and surrounding areas in Algood

Again, there are probably many reports of trees down and power out.

Last night's rains combined with rainfall in the early morning hours (around 1:30 am to 2 am) dropped just under 1" (0.98") on us here in northeast Cookeville.

Severe Weather Possible Monday

Warmer weather is on tap for Sunday with plenty of sunshine. Light winds will make outdoor activity quite comfortable. Highs will reach around 82° this afternoon in the Cookeville area.

We are watching the potential for severe weather to develop for middle Tennessee on Monday. At this point, the main threat is damaging winds with a lesser threat from large hail. Obviously, we'll keep up with that and keep you informed.

Interesting article in Sunday's Herald-Citizen newspaper about 18 cases of spotted fever in the Upper Cumberland region. There are tips in the article on how not to become a victim of a tick bite.

The rest of the 7-day features below normal temps for Tuesday through Friday but it should be mainly dry after the upcoming Monday weather event.

25 Degrees Cooler

If you remember last Friday, we were up in the 90's and the heat index was pushing 100°. Today, however, just a short week later, we'll struggle to get into the upper 60's with scattered light showers this morning and mostly cloudy conditions this afternoon. Winds will be from the northwest at around 5 to 15 mph.

Last evening's strong to severe weather stayed to our west and the heaviest rains moved north of the Cookeville area. Expectations were for around one inch of total precip and we have recorded just 2/10ths of an inch.

Tonight will be very cool with the lows dropping to the mid and upper 40's by Saturday morning. This is some of the coolest weather in nearly a month. By the way, the coolest June 1 ever was 42 degrees back in 1966.

Saturday's forecast will be partly sunny with highs in the mid 70's and Sunday will be sunny again with highs in the upper 70's. Enjoy this late spring cool down! The rest of the 7-day forecast is located at the link below.

Blazing Hot Sunday

We're in for another hot day across the Highlands region of Tennessee. The heat has prompted another special weather statement for today. Remember your heat safety tips.....I'd rather no one become a victim of this early season heatwave.

We missed out on a record yesterday in Cookeville. Officially the high was 91°. (record was 93° from 1916) We'll be close to another record today as we expect highs to rang from 92-94° and the record is 94°, which last occurred in 1941.

No rain is expected for Sunday, however, there will be a chance (albeit, slight) for thunderstorms on Memorial Day across the area.

Here is something to look forward to in the forecast. Next weekend will be as much as 20° COOLER than this weekend.

Close To A Record

Official Cookeville record from this date was 93° back in 1916.

While my station shows we hit 93° at 4:01 pm today, we'll see what the official observation station at the Cookeville Water and Sewer Plant on S. Jefferson near Hwy 111 recorded. Typically, we're about 1-2° apart most days.

The heat index or 'feels like' reading (a formula with the temperature and humidity) hit 100° at 4:26 pm this afternoon.

We'll see much of the same for Sunday except I believe temperatures may very well be a couple of degrees higher. Wouldn't be surprised at all to top out around 95° in the later afternoon hours. Memorial Day should be a few degrees cooler (around 90°) with a slight chance for a thunderstorm.

Tropical Storm Alberto

Not much fun for those who may have gone to Hilton Head, SC or Myrtle Beach, SC for their graduation trip. Tropical Storm Alberto is churning in the Atlantic Ocean just off the coast of Georgia right now. Dangerous surf conditions are possible along the coasts of Georgia and South Carolina through Monday.

Maximum sustained winds are 45 mph. Movement is slow at just 6 mph to the WSW. Alberto will turn and head northwest soon right along the coast beginning on Monday.

The storm will track very close to the North Carolina outer banks on Tuesday morning. Folks in that area should be aware of strong surf conditions.

Persons from Georgia to North Carolina should monitor the progress of Alberto.

Hurricane season is here a bit early and goes all the way through November.

Rain Totals This Past Weekend

Some very IMPRESSIVE rain totals across this area this past weekend.
See the map below.

One of the greatest amounts came from the Fire Dept that is 3 miles SSW of White House, TN in Sumner County. They measured an incredible 6.27" during the Mother's Day weekend event.

We 'dodged the bullet' in Putnam County with most gauges around the 1" range.

Some Rain Possible

Expect mainly cloudy skies and highs around 70° today in Cookeville. Should the clouds break up, we'll see highs a few degrees warmer. Can't rule out a shower or thunderstorm this afternoon.

TUESDAY'S FORECAST:
About the same for Tuesday...can't rule out a passing thunderstorm, otherwise it will be partly sunny and about 8-10° warmer with highs pushing 80°.

EXTENDED FORECAST:
Wednesday through the weekend.....Sunny skies and highs in the 80's!

MOTHER'S DAY RAINS:
We dodged a pretty big bullet with rainfall on Sunday. Expectations were in the 1-3" range for our area. We recorded .86", which was great for flowers, vegetable gardens, and farms, but wasn't the bigger amounts some areas around Nashville saw on Sunday.

Mother's Day 2012

Most outdoor plans for Mother's Day will have to be moved indoors today as a strong low pressure system is bringing lots of rain to Middle TN. Much of middle Tennessee is being affected by this system.

Happy Mother's Day to my mother, Kay Detwiler, and the mother of my children, Shawn Detwiler!

*Special Weather Statement*

By 7 am, we've already received 1/2 inch of rain overnight here in Cookeville, while back toward Nashville 1" - 1.25" recordings were common.

*Flood Safety Web Page*

Rough Overnight And Sunday

Expect rains to be heavy at times in the overnight hours and on Sunday as a strong surface low pressure system will move slowly northeast from Louisiana toward middle Tennessee. Rain will overspread the area during the overnight hours.

Not expecting anything severe but will see some heavy showers along with a thunderstorm. With an abundance of moisture available along with lift in the atmosphere, rainfall totals will be 1-2" across much of the area with some 3" amounts possible.

Here in the Cookeville area, the rain starts later tonight and will continue into Mother's Day before wrapping up  late in the evening. At this point, flooding doesn't appear to be an issue HOWEVER, street and creek flash flooding could be a problem in heavier storms.

Stay tuned to local radio, tv, and right here for the latest information.

Heavy Rain Event Expected

A major rainfall event is expected to occur over much of Tennessee this weekend. Here in the middle portion of the state, we could see rain in the 1.5" to 2.5" ranges with isolated local amounts of 3" and up. The best chances for the most rain will occur east of I-24 along the I-40 corridor. This puts Cookeville and the surrounding counties in that bulls eye. See map above.

Timing of the start of the rainfall is earlier in the day in the western sections and late in the day in the eastern most parts. Most of Saturday should be fine in Cookeville.

A Special Weather Statement has been issued that says street flooding and isolated flash flooding may occur in the heaviest downpours. River flooding is not expected due to the recent dry weather.

Rain!

The water droplets falling from the sky and covering everything is a phenomenon called rain. Since it has been awhile for our area, I thought a refresher on what it was is needed!

More of this is expected in the forecast. Highs will continue to be in the 80's.....a cool down is expected by middle of next week.

Pushing 90

The headline certainly doesn't refer to my age. We'll be HOT across the Cookeville and middle Tennessee area. I don't expect any chance for a shower or thunderstorm today. Those chances increase over the next several days.

Some forecasting models are indicating a possible shift about the middle of next week to most seasonal temperatures and a good chance for rain. We'll see. Temperatures until then will stay very warm with highs mainly in the 80's.

Do you remember the May 2010 flood in Nashville? Here is a great link detailing some of that information from the Nashville office of the National Weather Service.
