New Year's Eve Forecast

WET AND CHILLY: Your New Year's Eve forecast includes a little something for everyone. We'll reach a high of near 50° today before a cold front sweeps through and begins to drop our temperatures. Sprinkles this morning give way to a mostly cloudy sky this afternoon and tonight. You may see an occasional flurry of snow tonight if you're out and about. Lows by sunrise will be in the 20's. A slight chance of snow for New Year's Day and high of only 30°. The 7-day forecast below shows temperatures not getting above 30° from Saturday through Wednesday! Please check your hose connections on your home and make sure pets have proper amounts and food/water each day.

Blog Updates

Just a little housekeeping tonight....a few things have changed, been updated, or otherwise disappeared on my web site, so I wanted to run down a short list....

  • I've converted the section that had 'Great Weather Links' into a single section called 'Weather Guys Favorite Sites' and they are separated into weather and non-weather lists.
  • Still have special sections for the 2009-2010 Winter Outlook, the Davis Vantage Vue announcement, and the Mobile Website for those folks who look at my posts on their web-enable mobile phones
  • I will be moving some of the elements on the site around over the next week or so, please bear with me as this is an effort to make your visits easier.
  • There will be new things added like the current Snow Poll along with something similar to the Fun Weather Site of the Day and/or the Weather News Story of the Day.
  • Comments and suggestions are welcomed on every post. If you don't want it to appear for everyone's eyes, my e-mail address is public knowledge. Leave me a message and I will respond to you. As things move around, don't be afraid to ask where they went.
  • You may see some new ads on my site. By all means, check them out if you're interested.

The pattern gets really active Wednesday through the weekend as snow, sleet, cold rain, and accumulating snow are all in our forecast! Jeff Ray at NashvilleWX has a great explanation of the upcoming cold and snow. Enjoy your day and when you get a moment, check out my daughter's photography web site.

Snow Possible Today

**SNOW POLL IS POSTED ABOVE....PLEASE VOTE!**

SUNDAY SNOW POSSIBLE - A strong low-pressure system situated over Iowa promises to spin some clouds and possible moisture down into Middle Tennessee on Sunday. We should start out the morning with sunshine and chilly temperatures. Expect to be around 30° in the early morning rising to the lower 40's by the afternoon. Clouds will move in after lunch here in Cookeville and possibly earlier the farther west you go toward Nashville. As the clouds thicken, expect snow flurries to develop. Not expecting any accumulation although if we do see any, it will be toward the east in the higher elevations of the Cumberland Plateau.

COLD WEEK AHEAD - The upcoming work week between Christmas and New Year's Day is expected to be cold with temperatures averaging several degrees below normal and a BIG SHOT of cold air coming by week's end. We will see some of the coldest air of the young winter season. As I always say, though, this system is several days away and can change, so we will keep an eye on it and keep you informed! Davis Vantage Vue

BIG ANNOUNCEMENT: Here is the news I was talking about on Twitter & Facebook a few minutes ago. I found out recently that my parents wanted to give me something nice for Christmas. Since it had been my desire to upgrade my weather station, I asked for a Davis Vantage Vue. So, on or around January 15th, I will be receiving that weather station and will convert my current system over to it. Some photos of the Vue are located below.

This is the Vantage Vue indoor console (above). High quality and American made!

The Integrated Sensor Suite (above) measures rainfall, temperature, wind speed and direction. It also has a solar panel to keep it running smoothly!

Davis' advantages versus my current system are numerous. The bottom line is that I'll be able to provide information that is reliable and accurate. So, around the middle of January, I will let you all know when this system is up and running!

Merry Christmas Friends

Merry Christmas to all of my friends who stop in and visit 'The Weather Guy'.

You all have richly blessed me during 2009. It has been a year of great transition and a year a great opportunity. Doors have been closed and doors have been opened. It is a joy to celebrate the birth of our savior, Jesus Christ, and to reflect back upon all of the incredible gifts He has bestowed upon my family. You all are one of those gifts and I am appreciative of your continued support.

*Latest Local Forecast*

What a crazy, windy Christmas Eve. We had a 37 mph wind gust here at my home while other parts of our city saw gusts of 40 mph.

Through today, we stand at 75.78" of precip for 2009. It marks the second most ever!

Sunshine For Tuesday

COLD START: We're in the 20's across much of Middle Tennessee this morning with a heavy frost. Some areas are dealing with freezing fog issues. Freezing fog can put a light but slippery coat of ice down on elevated surfaces like bridges and overpasses. Be careful if you run in to that situation.

SUNNY SKIES: Sunshine for your Tuesday with highs in the lower 50's across the Cookeville area. Enjoy it, because it is possible we won't see sunshine again until Sunday. Rain enters the picture all the way through Christmas Day (sorry kids, no white Christmas), but we do have a chance for snow flurries the day after Christmas. Full details in the forecast link below.

Weather History for This Date
1989 - Bitter cold temperature readings across Middle TN as Clarksville drops to -12°, Crossville -8°, and Nashville sets an all-time low in December with -10°. Here in Cookeville, we dropped to -10°, which set an all-time record as well.

Thank you Sheri for the great picture and I hope we see this snow in Middle TN soon!

Late Saturday Night Look

LATE EVENING LOOK:  Temperatures have fallen to near 30° in Cookeville and snow continues to fall lightly. Roads are wet at this point, but could become hazardous at we progress throughout the overnight hours. Current radar returns indicate the snow is moving slowly eastward and we expect only very light snow as head toward morning. Expect Sunday to be a cloudy day with a very slight chance for snow flurries and a high of just 38°. Our extended outlook calls for below normal temperatures with another system moving in by Wednesday. We continue to monitor the possibility for snow on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

BLOGGER NOTE: I decided to feature this children's book because it is a classic and it was one I enjoyed reading as a younger child. I believe my sister had this book originally. Since we had a little snow tonight, this book seemed appropriate!

Disappearing Snow Overnight

***2:15 PM UPDATE***
The Winter Weather Advisory has been cancelled due to precipitation of the frozen variety not materializing. It has, however, been replaced with a Special Weather Statement which warns of slick roads due to falling temperatures and the threat of precipitation overnight. We could still see up to 1" of snow by morning.

Here is a snow photo from Scott Davis of Crossville. Scott operates a web site called THE MISSING that helps locate missing children. Keep up the great work Scott!

**11:55 AM UPDATE**
Just reviewing the LATEST, LOCAL FORECAST and our friends at the National Weather Service are sticking to their guns with snow chances. Kent from Monterey has a nice snow pic on his blog and received a text of snow pic from Scott in Crossville. I will try to get it posted soon. My thoughts are those areas will continue to see snow while we are just seeing a cold, dreary day. Oh well, sometimes we get snow and other times we don't. This is just one of those times. Temperatures have risen steadily, but slowly, during the morning. They peaked a little earlier at 38° and have retreated a degree in the last fifteen minutes. We expect to drop to around 30° overnight. What precipitation that does fall overnight will have a chance to stick.

WHAT HAPPENED?: Many of you wake this morning, in Cookeville, wondering what happened to the snow that was falling and accumulating yesterday evening. Here is how it all took place. Temperatures began to rise slowly beginning about 10 pm last evening through this morning. We went from 32° to a current reading of 35°. The snow that had accumulated was melted away by the rise in temperature AND a change from snow to rain overnight. We picked up another .13" from 10 pm until just now (7 a.m.) along with the .80" we received since 7 a.m. on Friday.

GRAPHICAL STORM REPORTS FROM OVERNIGHT

SATURDAY'S OUTLOOK: We are still under a Winter Weather Advisory as a series of upper level disturbances will swing through our area. Temperatures may rise a few degrees from the current temperature of 35° at 7 a.m., but will fall during these snow showers. Expect a light dusting right here in Cookeville with a possibility of an additional inch in the higher elevations of the Cumberland Plateau area to our north and east. Tonight, we should seeing snow continuing, but tapering off to flurries, and Sunday will see a slight chance of snow in the morning with highs in the 30's.

I've seen a 3.8" snow report from Grainger County in East Tennessee. I know there are higher amounts and will continue to look for reports. Nationally, up to 2 feet will accumulate near Washington, D.C. WOW!

Finally, with yesterday's near inch of precipitation, we're up to 75.02" for 2009. This ranks as the second most ever in Cookeville and just 1.44" away from setting the all-time record. Without a major rain event in the next 12 days, we'll fall just short.

9:15 PM UPDATE

Excellent explanation by Justin Bruce at News 2 in Nashville on the winter weather event.

COOKEVILLE AREA REPORT
We are seeing a complete changeover to snow here in the Cookeville area. Temperatures are hovering around freezing and have dropped slowly, but steadily since 10 o'clock this morning. I don't think we'll drop more than another degree or two overnight. The snow will become a bit more scattered overnight and will remain scattered on Saturday. While we will see some accumulation locally, the higher amounts will be off to our north and east. Expect around 1" by morning on grassy surfaces along with some protected roads becoming hazardous, including bridges and overpasses.

NORTHEAST TN REPORT:
Roads are becoming almost impassible in extreme northeast Tennessee.
TDOT's Smartmap
If you're planning on traveling that direction over the next 24 hours, please call 511 from your mobile phone. You'll be able to get up-to-moment updates on road conditions including any incidents.

OTHER REPORTS:
I'm hearing a forecast of 15-24" of snow for our nation's capital. To put that into perspective, they've seen just two 20"+ snows EVER in Washington, D.C.

HOUSEKEEPING:
We measured .80" of rain before the rain-to-snow changeover. This gives us nearly 75" for the year which makes 2009 the second wettest in Cookeville's history. Enjoy the beautiful snow if you are fortunate enough to see it in your location and maybe the next storm system close to Christmas will affect us here in the Cookeville area with more accumulating snow.

Tricky Forecast for Snow

**4 PM UPDATE**
New information is out from the National Weather Service and we continue to be under a Winter Weather Advisory from 6 pm tonight through 4 pm on Saturday. The best estimation is for between 1 and 3 inches of snow to accumulate by Saturday evening. Travel may become hazardous across some portions of the Cumberland Plateau. Be very careful if you plan to be out late this evening or early on Saturday morning.

**12:55 PM UPDATE**
Getting reports of snow ('big, fat flakes') from my buddy, Jim, who works east of Cookeville on the mountain. Elevation at his office is probably 800 feet higher than ours. Also, getting reports from the folks at the Smoky Mountain's Blog that Newfound Gap has 4" of snow!

**12 NOON UPDATE**
Expectations, at this point, are for the changeover from rain to snow to begin around dark or just after for the immediate Cookeville area. Higher elevations east toward Monterey could see an earlier changeover. GRAPHIC-CAST MAP FROM NWS-NASHVILLE! As of now, unless something changes, expect around 1" of snow overnight for Cookeville while areas to our east and in the higher elevations could wake up to 3"+ by daylight. As always, this is an active & developing situation and is subject to change.

WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY: For the Cookeville and surrounding areas for tonight through Saturday. Rain changing to snow overnight. Cold today, high only 43° with rain most of the day. Dress warmly! Advisory here!

RAIN THEN SNOW?: All sorts of things to discuss on this Friday morning. Rain for most of today followed by an interesting weather scenario tonight. Expect accumulations of 4-6 inches of snow in the East Tennessee mountains. Closer to Cookeville, sections of the northern Cumberland Plateau could see anywhere from around 1" near Monterey on up to 4" up around Oneida, Wartburg, and other rural areas. I think this will occur late on Friday through Saturday evening with snow showers on Sunday. As of now, a Winter Weather Advisory is posted from the northern Cumberland Plateau.

Winter Solstice: The shortest day of the year or the longest night of the year, whichever you want to call it occurs on Monday. It is the official start of winter and that will occur at 11:47 a.m. For a complete story of why this happens, check out Bobby Boyd's post at the NWS-Nashville.

White Christmas Update: Jeff Ray, at Channel 2 in Nashville, has an interesting read about the possibilities of a white Christmas for our area. I encourage you to check it out!
