Sunday and Beyond...

SUNNY SUNDAY
Very nice weather ahead for our Sunday.  If you like sunshine and warm temperatures, Sunday is your kind of day! How about mostly sunny with highs right around 60 degrees and some wind?  Not too bad for February 1st!

*Latest, Local Forecast*

WHAT ABOUT SNOW??
Ok, let's get to the other weather going on for the next few days after that.  We have a developing low pressure system that is slated to track near the gulf coast on Monday and Tuesday.  It will make a big left turn and run up the I-95 corridor and east coast in the middle of next week.  This will, of course, create one massive snowstorm for the major metropolitan areas on the east coast.  What does that mean for us in Tennessee??  I'm glad you asked.

WHAT IT MEANS FOR US
There is the potential for this storm track to go a little north and west of the current track according to the latest computer models.  If it should track that way, we could see a our biggest snowfall of the current winter season.  I'm NOT saying that is going to happen...however, it is worth mentioning.  Right now, the thinking is for rain to change to snow on Monday.  Timing is around 12 noon or so, again not set in stone at this point.  There is also some potential (albeit; low) for snow on Sunday night....(I know..after a 60-degree high)

TURNING COLD AGAIN!
After a changeover to all snow on Monday afternoon, we expect light snow on Monday night with lows in the mid 20's.  Another impulse swings through on Tuesday giving us yet another shot of snow with highs struggling to reach 30 degrees.  Along with that extra chance of snow comes much colder temperatures as lows Tuesday night will be in the teens for most of us in Middle Tennessee.

WARMER WEATHER LATER IN WEEK
We do recover nicely by the end of the week where we might see highs in the upper 40's and lower 50's...but, we have to get through this potential winter weather situation first.  I'm not yet excited about our chances, however, I am starting to get there.  Should the computer models shape up tomorrow (by getting in more consistent agreement), then we can start talking about potential accumulations.  For now, let's just say we are going to see some winter weather precipitation during the first part of the workweek!!

Back Amongst The Living (Nice Weekend Forecast)

FAMILY HEALTH UPDATE
My family and I are beginning to be back amongst the living.  After fighting a terrible stomach virus, things are starting to get back to normal.  Our baby is eating more normal type food while my wife and I are selective as to what we are having.  Our eldest daughter is still fighting the effects of the virus, but hers hasn't been as severe as the three of us.

GETTING BACK TO WEATHER
Let's look at this weekend's weather in Cookeville, TN.  The sun is trying to make an appearance this afternoon (Friday).  We do anticipate a few snow flurries tonight as a 'pool of moisture' (according to the NWS Forecast Discussion) swings through our area.  Dry weather is expected for the rest of our weekend along with warmer temperatures.  High of 46 on Saturday and 55 on Sunday. Count on sunshine for both days.

*Latest, Local Forecast*

MAJOR WINTER STORM AHEAD?
We are watching the potential development of a major winter storm for Monday and Tuesday.  The biggest question at this point is this: 'Who gets snow and who gets a big, fat disappointment?'  Confidence is high enough, right now, for us to see snow here in Cookeville.  I'm not confident enough to tell you how much accumulation we are talking about.

NWS-NASHVILLE GRAPHIC-CAST
This graphic-cast shows the track of the low pressure system through Alabama and into middle Georgia. This is a perfect scenario for an accumulating snow for Middle Tennessee.  Higher confidence in our accumulation amounts will be available LATER this weekend.
I'll have more later on this impending winter storm.

Stomach Virus

I'll be out of pocket today due to a stomach virus that kept me up most of last night.  Will spare everyone the details, but, let's just say my throat is very sore.  Drinking Pedia-lite, water, and ginger ale.  No food.

If you feel led, please pray for my quick healing.  Weather links are above this post.

*Latest, Local Forecast*
Check out the TDOT Smartmap.  Memphis is getting hammered with snow right now.
Some may be surprised schools were cancelled as the temperatures were in the upper 50's earlier this morning.  I want to be clear.  This is a fast-moving system.  To send the kids in to school just to turn around and take them home didn't make sense.  I congratulate the system for making a good call.

Putnam County, TN Schools CLOSED

Just received word that local schools are closed today, Wed., January 28th.

BIG Changes Are Coming!

***10:35 PM UPDATE***
Thinking is still the same.  Believe we will see rain increasing overnight.  Don't think we see a changeover to snow until daylight..somewhere in the 8-9 a.m. range..that could vary by a hour either way.  We will see moderate to heavy snow fall for a bit before ending.  Possible accumulations here in Cookeville of between 1-2 inches.  Depending on how fast temperatures fall, roads could become hazardous quickly.  You have every link you'll need at the top of this page.  There is a problem with the EMA weather page along with the Cookeville Web Cam, but we'll leave those links on the page.  NWS is continuing with the Winter Weather Advisory along with a Flood Advisory. More detail is available at the 'Forecast Page'
-----------------------------------------------------------

Let's look at the complete weather picture for Middle TN.

At 4:30 pm,
Temperatures are in the mid 40's here in Cookeville
Nashville is in 30's
Chattanooga is near 70°
Knoxville is in the mid 40's.
Crossville is in the 50's.

Got an update from a friend in Tulsa, Oklahoma...
"As far as the weather here... bring a shovel if you're coming in this direction... We have 2 - 3 inches of sleet on top of about 1/2 inch of ice. Sleet is still falling now with our temp topping out today at a balmy 20, with a WNW wind at 10mph... It looks like a winter wonderland...and very slick outside! Low tonight at 12...will be quite slippery I'd imagine most of the day tomorrow!"

The latest thinking on our weather is for rain to continue tonight.  The change to snow isn't expected until after daybreak tomorrow here in Cookeville.  Areas to our west will be the first, obviously, to change.

Accumulations are expected in the 1"-2" with more to our west. Temperatures will fall all day tomorrow.  Don't ask me about school. Just can't make a call based on 'what-ifs'.

Very cold Wednesday night with more snow chances on Thursday night and Friday.

I'll be back later with more.

Dodging The Bullet

****3:45 PM UPDATE****
A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for our area for the early morning hours (4 a.m.) through lunch (1 p.m.).  Temperatures have 'warmed' into the middle 40's today.  The rain has mostly stopped for now.  We've received over 1 inch of rain since midnight.

****1:15 PM UPDATE****
Amazing contrast (almost 40°) in temperatures at this hour for our great state.  It is near 70° at the Tennessee/Alabama border while it is 32° at the Tennessee/Kentucky border.

****8:45 AM UPDATE****
Flood Watch issued for our area through Wednesday morning .

JUST MISSED US
We awake this morning with temperatures BARELY above freezing and rain falling.  Our schools here in Putnam County are on time. This is a wonderful thing.  Not too many miles to our north and west, they are dealing with freezing rain, one of the most dangerous weather events.

MORNING CONDITIONS
Currently at 6:45 a.m., we stand at 33.2° and expect to rise into the 40's today.  We've measured .40" of rain overnight.

Some reports around our area.
Quarter-inch ice accumulations in northwest Tennessee
All rain in south Nashville, ice accumulating in north Nashville
Snapping trees (due to ice) in Lafayette (Macon County)
Hopkinsville, KY an 'icy mess'

SNOW POSSIBLE WEDNESDAY
Our winter weather issues crop up on Wednesday.  It is possible (I say possible) that we see 1-3 inches of snow on Wednesday.

I'll be back later with more.  Going to be a busy next few days!

Very Active Week Ahead

ALL KINDS OF WET WEATHER
Our weather pattern turns very active starting today.  We expect some sort of precipitation every day. From rain to freezing rain to sleet and even snow, we'll have something for everyone!

KEEP UP WITH THE LATEST
I would keep up with the latest forecast as the computer forecasting models are having a tough time with the upcoming weather events this week.  The National Weather Service in Nashville has issued a FREEZING RAIN ADVISORY for counties to our northwest.  They expect a hazardous icing event developing for tonight.  Counties to the northwest of Nashville are under an ice storm warning. They could face power outages due to accumulating ice on trees and power lines.

THIS WEEK
For today, mostly cloudy skies with highs in the 40's.  Then, the fun begins! Freezing rain tonight with no accumulation of ice expected.  Rain all day and night on Tuesday.  Then a mixed bag of precipitation for Wednesday and Thursday.  It finally becomes all snow late Thursday night and on Friday.

Another Cold Day

****8:45 PM UPDATE****
Sleet falling right now in Cookeville.  Radar showing more moving into Cookeville city limits.  Bridges and overpasses could become hazardous.  Sleet and snow flurries should end later tonight.  No accumulation (at this time) is expected.

****2:00 PM UPDATE****
Seeing a few snow flurries flying.  Latest radar indicates a few echoes.  Don't think it will be more than the occasional flurry of snow.  Model madness is all around us as the last release shows a significant ice/snow event for us on Tuesday.  I'm NOT ready to go there just yet and will continue to monitor the latest....

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Good Sunday morning to everyone!

Should be another chilly day for most of us here in Middle TN.  Temperatures are starting out in the teens this morning across our area.  Sunny this morning, but clouds return this afternoon as highs are expected to only reach the upper 30's.

*Latest, Local Forecast*

Our next weather event appears to be coming in on Monday night.  At this time, we expect an all rain event.  These systems, however, can have a tendency to give us a chance of wintry weather.  We'll watch it closely and keep you informed on the latest.  Areas to our north and west are under a Special Weather Statement.

If you don't have anywhere to go to church today, check out Trinity Assembly in Algood, TN.  If you aren't in the immediate Cookeville area, you can go to trintyalgood.com and see the services live this morning at 8:30 am and 10:30 am.

Make it an excellent day!

Chilly Saturday and Sunday

Saturday Morning Thoughts
Cold air has returned (once again) to Middle Tennessee.  Just yesterday, we were in the mid and upper 50's here in Cookeville.  Now, we'll struggle to reach 40° today.  A north wind is making things feel even chillier.  Tonight's temperatures will drop into the 20's under a mostly clear sky.  Sunday's weather is a copy of today, but with a few more clouds.

*Latest, Local Forecast*

Winter Returning Again?
We are currently watching a possible developing winter weather event for Tuesday.  At this time, there is an indication of some slippery roads for Tuesday morning.  I'm not confident in this just yet and will continue to monitor the latest information.

Middle TN Weather Fact of The Day
One of my favorite sites on the web is the Middle Tennessee Weather Fact of The Day put out the Nashville office of the National Weather Service.  Just on this date (January 24th), you have a whole host of things that happened...

In 1943, Clarksville sets a new record high in January of 82°
In 1963, cold records are set in several cities, including Kingston Springs with -30°.  Waverly goes from 66° down to -26°..an 80° drop in just one-day.  The Duck River freezes from bank to bank.  The harbors along the Tennessee River freeze.
In 1972, Nashville's high of 78° sets a new high record for January.
In 1997, 12 tornadoes strike causing 31 injuries, damage in excess of 9 million dollars.  An F4 strikes near Murfreesboro and it is the 7th largest outbreak in the state's history.

Warm, Windy Friday

****1:00 PM UPDATE****
So much for the warm sunshine.  Clouds have moved in and with the strong breeze (gusting to 20 mph), it feels much cooler than earlier this morning.  The barometer is on it's way down, which means changeable weather is coming.

ON THIS DATE:
In 1963, Nashville records it's greatest one-day drop in temperature.  After a high of 48°, the temperature drops to -13° by midnight representing a 61° drop...(courtesy-Nashville NWS Office )

It is a beautiful morning in Middle Tennessee.  Check out this sunrise over Cookeville!  Awesome.

Today's weather is going to be similar to an early spring day. Windy conditions with bright sunshine and a high temperature of near 60°. (Normal highs and lows this time of year are 46° and 25°)   Our weekend cools off once again, but enjoy today.

*Latest, Local Forecast*

I'm headed over to my church, Trinity Assembly, this morning.  We are moving furniture in to the new FUEL STUDENT MINISTRIES building. This building, along with the Royal Ranger building, is phase #1 of a three-phase project that will enlarge our facilities.  It is an exciting time in Youth Ministry.  God is moving amongst our youth.

Warm Friday, Then BIG Changes

I think we can ALL get excited about 60° temperatures on Friday.  Don't expect it to stick around though.  This is Tennessee and it is winter time!

Saturday's highs are only expected to be in the upper 30's with a mixed bag of precipitation for Friday night and Saturday.  Interesting weather once again!

*Latest, Local Forecast*

Sunday's high will be only be near 40°.  The extended outlook for Monday through Wednesday is for highs Monday to be in the lower 40's, Tuesday's high about the same with a chance of snow or rain, and Wednesday will be in the middle 40's.

Enjoy the last warm day for a while on Friday!

Putnam County Schools OPEN

Putnam County, TN schools will be open on Friday, January 23, 2009.

Temperatures made it all the up to 50° today aiding in the melting of snow and ice.

Beautiful Thursday

LOTS OF SUNSHINE!
A gorgeous day ahead here in Cookeville, TN.  Temperatures are expected to hit 50° under a bright, sunny sky!  We will see even warmer temperatures on Friday as highs reach 57°.  The next expectation for rain or snow comes around Monday night into Tuesday.  It is a little too far out in the forecast to be precise with what type or amount of precipitation!

VERY WARM
Go out and enjoy this beautiful day.  It will be our warmest day since January 10th.  Tomorrow will be our warmest day since January 4th when we hit 67°.  January 23rd's record high here in Cookeville is 58°, so we may have a shot at tying or breaking that record!

WEBSITE VISITS
January 2009 has been a huge month here at The Weather Guy.  We are on pace to have the biggest month ever.  In fact, it will exceed the biggest month ever by more than 30%!  I am very appreciative that many of you have chosen this web site as your 'go to' place for weather information.  I never tire of hearing from you all through comments, e-mails, and face-to-face encounters in public.  It is humbling.

SPOTTER CLASSES COMING
If you live in Middle TN, your spotter class training is coming to a city near you very soon.  Check out the schedule by going to the NWS-Nashville Spotter Information Page and see if your town has it's class scheduled.  The importance of attending these classes cannot be overemphasized.

Putnam County TN Schools Closed

Putnam County, TN Schools are CLOSED on Thursday, January 22, 2009.

While we did get a good dose of sunshine today, temperatures only made it to 33° today for a high.  This aided the melting process just a bit, but not enough to make many roads clear enough for bus travel.  As usual, it is better to error on the side of caution.

*Latest, Local Forecast*

Several other systems in the northern plateau region are closed also.  See the School Closings list to the right to check out the latest.

Cold and Snow Facts (Historical Day)

WEATHER HISTORY
Let's start out with this day in history.
On January 21st, 1985..Cookeville records it's lowest temperature ever as our low drops to -22°....we never go into positive numbers as the high reaches just -8°...

Other record lows on this date in 1985 include
Allardt (-27),
Carthage (-17),
Celina (-20),
Centerville (-26),
Columbia (-20),
Cookeville (-22),
Crossville (-21),
Crossville (Experiment Station) (-25),
Dickson (-23),
Franklin (-21),
Lebanon (3 W) (-20),
Lewisburg (-20),
Livingston (-25),
Monteagle (-20)
Mount Pleasant (-17),
Neapolis (-23),
Shelbyville (-20),
Smithville (-24),
Woodbury (-28).

SNOWFALL AROUND TENNESSEE
I've been looking over some snowfall amounts in Tennessee and found the following measurements.  Mount LeConte has 9", other locations in the Smokies are: Sugarlands Visitor Center has 3", Newfound Gap  and Cades Cove both with 4".  Erwin in Unicoi County is reporting 6", while Washburn in Grainger County has 2.6".  Here in Cookeville, we have 1" and a station just to our east in Monterey has 1.8"....

A Welcomed Warm Up Ahead..

After lows this morning of 11° here in Cookeville, TN, we'll warm to the middle 30's this afternoon.

Today's high under a bright, sunny sky will feel great compared to the last few days.  We'll be near 50 for Thursday and near 60 on Friday.

Don't get used to the warm weather because a cold front brings us more seasonable weather (40's and 20's) for the weekend.  The first of next week will probably see a return of winter precipitation.

Yesterday's snow event was a bit of a surprise.  There was a 20% chance of flurries, but the length of time snow fell as well as the amount wasn't originally forecasted.

More Snow in Cookeville Overnight

***3:00 PM UPDATE***
Snow is falling moderately again and sticking as temperatures are hovering around 22° with a north wind at 10 mph giving us a wind chill of 14°

***1:00 PM UPDATE***
Putnam County schools are now closed according to their website.
www.putnamcountyschools.com

***12:40 PM UPDATE***
School closings for Wednesday have been announced in the following counties:
Fentress and Cumberland.

With more snow falling and temperatures in the lower 20's, I imagine more counties will be announcing they are closing as well.

***11:15 UPDATE***
Snow flurries flying in Cookeville.

Snow fell overnight in Cookeville.  It put down a light coating which made for some tricky travel this morning.  Temperatures won't help us for most of the day as we start out in the upper teens and look to get to around 25° later today for a high.

Most roads are in good shape with the exception of the typical neighborhood streets and the roads that are protected (tree-lined and facing north) from any melting.

Snow Later?

VERY NICE SUNDAY
Temperatures are beginning their descent downward as the winds have switched to the North-Northwest.  It was quite a warm day compared to the last several January days.  Highs reached 47° (46.9°) here in Cookeville today at 1:39 p.m.

LATER THIS EVENING
The expectation later is for some rain to develop.  That rain could change over to snow. Noticed the barometer has been on a steep drop.  Now at 29.77 and continuing to fall.  This indicates change (not the political type) is in the air!  Some of the counties to our east are under a Winter Weather Advisory.  The expectation here in Cookeville is for around 1/2" of snow tonight and turning much colder with lows in the mid 20's.

THE WEEK AHEAD'S WEATHER
Expect snow showers the first half of the day on Monday (MLK day).  It will be cold, with steady temperatures in the 20's.  Snow showers again on Monday night as another cold front makes a visit to our area.  These should last into Tuesday and we're still working to get a handle on the accumulation amount. Temperatures will be cold with lows around 20° on Monday night and highs only in the mid 20's once again on Tuesday.  Cold Tuesday night with lows in the teens and we see a little warmup for mid-week!  Highs in the 40's.

I'll have more later...including our latest forecast.

Slippery Road Conditions

**7:10 AM SUNDAY UPDATE**
Road conditions east of me are considered hazardous in several East TN counties.
TDOT Smartway Website for checking road conditions
More snow possible today (Sunday) and could have tough conditions again later

It is amazing what a little precipitation falling on roads that have been exposed to the bitter cold temperatures will create.  A MESS!

Road conditions to my east are hazardous tonight.  I-40 is in much better shape than just about 90 minutes ago.  That being said, Highway 62 from Monterey to Clarkrange is slick.  Hanging Limb Highway north of Monterey is dangerous.  The Muddy Pond road off Hanging Limb Highway is very slick according to sheriff's deputies.

Temperatures are expected to rise overnight.  This should help road conditions.  Snow is expected tomorrow through Monday.

Many Hours Below Freezing

**UPDATE**
Went above freezing at 2:13 p.m. today ending our below 32° streak at 65 hours and 25 minutes!

*Latest, Local Forecast*

We went below freezing at 8:48 p.m. on January 14th and are just a few degrees below freezing at just after 12 noon today.  That is nearly 64 hours of temperatures less than 32°....ponds are frozen, the ground is hard, and vehicles are...well...acting funny.  The odd thing is this: You just get used to the cold temperatures.

Looking at our current conditions, we've had wind gusts (out of the SSW) to 20 mph today.  This makes wind chills (or feels like) in the teens.  With no sunshine this afternoon, it won't feel so warm.  All of Middle TN and most of West TN are cloudy.  Temperatures are really going to struggle to reach freezing this afternoon.  They will, however, be steady tonight as precipitation moves in.  Looks like a rain/snow mix.

1916....12" of snow falls in Celina
1999....Straight line winds do immense damage in Columbia, TN
Softball-sized hail in Pulaski (largest ever known in that area)
61 mph wind gust in Nashville

Map showing the lows!

WHAT ABOUT TONIGHT?
We expect most of us in Middle Tennessee to be down to between 5° and 10° for lows once again tonight.  This will probably occur just after midnight and temperatures will begin to rise after 3 a.m.

*Latest, Local Forecast*

BUT I SEE SNOW ON RADAR!
There are snow showers showing on radar, BUT, they are not hitting the ground.  The air is just too dry.

WILL IT SNOW?
More snow is in the forecast.  Model runs are tricky at this point, but our best guess right now is for a possibility of snow for Saturday night late through Sunday night.  Another chance enters our picture again for Monday night into Tuesday.

HOW ABOUT WARM WEATHER
If you're wanting warm weather, you'll have to wait a while.  Temperatures won't rise into the 40's until at least Thursday.  BUNDLE UP! :)

Ponds and Rivers Frozen

I left early this morning for rural Jackson County. The river (actually lake areas of the main channel) are frozen nearly 100 yards out from shore.  I haven't seen this in years.  Highs will be in the lower 20's today and we expect more single digit lows tonight here.

More freezing expected to occur.

Historic Cold Weather Ahead

The latest information from the National Weather Service indicates we will be BELOW ZERO here in Cookeville overnight Thursday.  The record for Friday, as I posted yesterday, is -3°....we will definitely be within shot of that.

*Latest, Local Forecast*

Cold Morning, Even Colder Ahead!

COLD START
Most communities in Middle Tennessee have warmed to the lower 20's at 8 o'clock this morning.  Livingston and Cookeville are still at 19° while Crossville is at 17°....all three communities were at 14° at 5 a.m.

COLD DAYS AHEAD
We expect to reach the mid and upper 30's today, but a strong south wind will makes temperatures feel much colder.  The strongest of the cold air begins it's arrival tonight along with some snow with lows in the lower teens.  Highs on Thursday will struggle to get out of the teens while lows Thursday night are expected to be around 0°..Friday's highs will again fight to reach 20°.

Record Setting Cold

Friday could eclipse some record cold here in Tennessee.
Here in Cookeville, I pulled records dating back to 1896.

Low Temperature Records:
Wednesday's Record: 5° (1963)
Thursday's Record: 5° (1979)
Friday's Record -3° (1972)

Lowest High Temperature:
Friday's Record 14° (not sure of the year)

Considering lows around ZERO are going to be in the forecast, some will set records.  I think we'll get close to it as well.  The other interesting number is the coldest high temperature for the 16th of January is 14°...we may be within striking distance of that number.

Bitter Cold Ahead!

***9:00 PM UPDATE***
Already down to 20°
Looks like mid-teens or lower by sunrise
Cold, raw, windy day tomorrow
Hi 39°, but cold wind chills
May not be out of teens on Thursday
Low near ZERO by Friday morning

***3:10 PM UPDATE***

Radar Shot @ 5:25 AM

WHERE IS OUR PRECIPITATION??
The precipitation is late arriving in our area.  A cold front is swinging through Middle Tennessee this morning bringing some rain and snow along with much colder temperatures.  At 5:25 am, we are 36° and the winds are from the southwest.  We do expect the front to pass and winds to turn to the northwest and pick up some speed.  Wind gusts could top 25 mph.  Temperatures will fall all afternoon through the 20's.  Dress warmly!

WHAT ABOUT TODAY, MICHAEL...
Everyone wants to know about snow.  I do believe we'll see snow today.  I am not overly excited about any accumulation.  We need more precipitation in place for accumulating snow.

FORECAST AHEAD
Tonight will be cold with lows in the teens.  High Wednesday just 41° with a low on Wednesday night of 16° and snow chances creep back in.  More snow on Thursday with a high of just 23° as another STRONG COLD FRONT sweeps through.  Low Thursday night of 7° by sunrise on Friday.  Only 21° for a high on Friday.

By the way, if you're a SNOW NUT like me, check out the BLOG PAGE for WGN-Chicago!  They've nearly doubled their total snowfall from last winter and are on pace for one of the biggest years in recent history.

Minor Snow Chance Overnight (Maybe Tomorrow)

This is what I wish we would get!

A 20% chance of snow overnight here in Cookeville.  Right now, it doesn't look so good for those wanting a significant snow event.  We do see a fairly good chance (50%) of snow for Tuesday.  No accumulation is anticipated, although the National Weather Service says 'Less than a half-inch'...

The theme for the rest of the week is COLD!
38° on Tuesday
40° on Wednesday
26° on Thursday
25° on Friday
These are the HIGH temperatures!

The coldest morning appears to be on Friday where we will be in the single digits.  Friday night's lows will be in the low teens.

To recap, a slight chance for snow overnight tonight into Tuesday and another chance on Wednesday night into Thursday.

*Latest, Local Forecast*

Speaking of cold..on this date in 1918, Nashville reaches 2°...the lowest high temperature ever recorded.

***4:30 PM UPDATE*** Our beautiful city! :)
The latest is out from the NWS and they're 'downplaying' the snow event tonight and tomorrow.  While we still expect snow to fall, confidence is not as high on the precipitation amounts.

***3:30 PM UPDATE***
Noticed TDOT has been 'spraying the roads' with their magic formula.  Anyone know if that stuff works?
MONDAY'S OUTLOOK
Chilly again today with a clearing sky.  Expect highs around We are watching the latest on a couple of possible snow events for the Cookeville, TN area. The first is expected to arrive on Tuesday.  Right now, the thinking is around 1" of accumulation here in town. Obviously, the Monterey area along with other areas in the higher elevations on the Plateau could expect to receive more. The other events are further down in this post. Keep in mind, PLEASE, the weather is changing constantly and updates to the forecast will be needed as the situations warrant.  I will do my best to keep you informed.

SNOW AND BITTER COLD
Temperatures recover at bit on Wednesday under a sunny sky, but snow chances develop once again on Wednesday into Thursday.  Along with the snow, a VERY STRONG cold front barrels through our area giving us the coldest temperatures of the season.  I wouldn't be surprised to see some 0° readings by Friday morning. Thursday and Friday high temperatures will struggle into the lower 20's.

THE WEEKEND AHEAD
Another interesting scenario is setting up for the upcoming weekend. While it is a little early to forecast it, there remains a possibility of seeing another snow event. We'll wait for a few more days to pass before we start talking about any snow chances/accumulation with that event.

A Little Snow, A lot of Cold!

Temperatures have struggled to reach freezing today. A few, very light flurries have fallen from the sky. The photo (above) was taken with my cell phone camera.  It shows the light snow in my CoCoRaHS manual rain gauge around 12:15 p.m.  None of it is sticking on the ground.

VERY COLD SUNDAY
Our high occurred at midnight (32.2°) and temperatures since then have hovered between our high and 29.2° which occurred at 3:32 a.m. See My Weather Station Live History

SNOW THIS WEEK
Some snow events are possible this week.  Monday night looks somewhat promising and Wednesday night looks good also.  We'll continue to monitor the upcoming weather and keep you informed.

PREPARE FOR BITTER COLD
Do what is necessary to prepare your home and your outdoor animals for the impending cold snap later this week.  With lows in the single digits possible and daytime highs in the 20's, animals will need extra food and shelter to stay warm.  You'll need to make sure no garden hoses are attached to outdoor faucets.  Also, exposed pipes will freeze in temperatures this low.

Cold Sunday..Interesting Weather Ahead

A little light snow this morning in the Cookeville, TN area.  Rooftops, cars, patio furniture all have just a bit on them.

ACTIVE WEEK AHEAD

We awake on this awesome Sunday to find an overcast sky and temperatures below freezing this morning across much of Tennessee.  We will see highs today only in the 30's as the first push of cold air has arrived.  By the end of this week, we'll think of 30's as warm!

There are a couple of good chances of snow in our upcoming seven-day forecast.  The first arrives Monday night into Tuesday.  The next arrives Wednesday night into Thursday and brings with it the polar express!  Lows on Thursday night will be in the single digits for many of us. Chicago's WGN Weather Blog has a great post about the cold air coming.  They've already received another foot of snow!  Our friends at AlabamaWX discuss the upcoming cold snap and use the word 'brutal'.

Rain, Falling Temperatures, and More!

SATURDAY MORNING RAMBLINGS
Rain this morning will be followed by falling temperatures this afternoon.   We may see some light snow flurries later tonight.  Sunday is expected to be cold with highs reaching just under 40° BUT with a sunny sky.

PLAYOFF FOOTBALL IN NASHVILLE!
Our Tennessee Titans face the Baltimore Ravens this afternoon at LP Field in Nashville.  My predicition is the Titans 21 Ravens 17.  *GO TITANS*  Game time temps are expected to be around 50° and fall through the 40's during the first half.  Depending on the arrival of the cold air, temps could be down to just under 40° by the end (of the Raven's season that is) of 4th qtr! :)

NEXT WEEK'S THOUGHTS
We staring down the barrel of a very strong cold pattern.  It is expected to take hold of the Tennessee area starting late next week.  Temperatures will be among the coldest we've seen in the last 4 years.  I wouldn't be surprised to see us drop to near ZERO for a night or two.  Highs may only reach the mid 20's on Friday.  Forecasting models do hint at a possible snow event.  We are nowhere close to putting that in stone!  The cold air, though, is coming.  That you can count upon!

Very Cold Morning (More Cold Coming)

COLD START
We awake to temperatures in the lower 20's in Cookeville and even lower in some areas around us. Our friend in Crossville, just to our east, bottomed out just below 20° this morning.  Most locations in Middle TN are in the lower 20's this morning also.

*Latest, Local Forecast*

NICE TODAY, THEN RAIN
Temperatures recover nicely today under a bright, sunny sky.  Highs should 50° for a lot of us in the Upper Cumberland.  The rest of the upcoming weekend features rain with a possible snow mix on Saturday night.  No accumulation expected at this time.

ARCTIC COLD EXPECTED LATE NEXT WEEK
My good friend, Eddie Holmes at Jackson (TN) Weather, has an excellent post about his thoughts on next week's bitterly cold outbreak.  We could be staring at the coldest weather of our winter season thus far as our departure from normal temps could be as much as 25°.  James Spann, from AlabamaWX , posts about temps in Alaska -50° and below!

HOW ABOUT THOSE GATORS!
Congrats to Coach Urban Meyer and the Florida Gators on another BCS championship.  While I'm not a big fan of their program, I am especially impressed with their quarterback, Tim Tebow.  What a strong leader! From the accepting of responsibility after their loss at Ole Miss to willing his team to victory, he leads them.

You may have noticed the phrase John 3:16 under his eyes.  It comes from the bible and says 'For God loved the world so that he gave his only Son so that anyone who believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.' (The Living Bible)

Tebow's strong faith isn't just something he wears during a game, he practices it.  I encourage you to live your faith and be a good example to others!

Sunny, Chilly Thursday!

We've flirted with the 40° mark around 12 noon, but have backed off that this afternoon.  Skies are, however, mostly clear with bright sunshine.  The West-Southwest wind is making things feel chilly if you're outside for very long.  My Weather Station Live History

Temperatures tonight will be on the cold side as we see low 20's by daybreak here in Cookeville and even lower as you get outside the city.

Looking at our weather for Friday through the weekend, expect high temperatures on Friday to rebound to near 50° under a sunny sky (it'll feel like summer...ummm, NOT!).   Rain returns Friday night with lows in the 40's and Saturday appears to be a mixed bag as we begin with rain but end with snow.  The snow continues for Saturday night.  I'm not excited, right now, about any accumulations.  Sunday will be sunny once again with a similar type day as we've had today.  Chilly, but nice with a cool wind.

Cheer on our Titans Saturday as they host the Baltimore Ravens.  It is step #2 in our quest to reach the Super Bowl!
